(a) Research background including
Hypothesis /Research Questions and Literature Reviews.
Keterangan latar belakang penyelidikan termasuk kenyataan hipotesis / persoalan penyelidikan dan kajian
literatur.
Students with disability have been identified as a key equity groups for several years on the basis of their overall
participating level, progression rates and the employments outcomes they achieves after completion (Phelps and
Hanley-Maxwell, 1997). Although, disabilities covering a broad characteristics such as physical disability, vision
disability, learning disability, hearing disability and intelectual disability not all of them are suitable for
employment. In line with this statement, only those with hearing and deaf impared youth will be a central focus
for this study.

In relation to an increasing awakening concern on the importance of giving career guidance and the training for
the young people, Ministry of Higher Education has introduced continuing skill-based program especially for
youth with hearing impairment with the intention to equip them for carreer in the hospitality industry (Harun,
2005). The hospitality industry in this study will be limited to food catering and hotel industries.
Up to 2005, the Polytechnic of Johor Bahru that has been given the mandate to run a pilot program in equipping
students for career in the hospitality industry has produced hundreds of graduates. Unfortunately not more than
20 percents of the graduates has been found to work directly in the hospitality industry. There has no information
available to explain why that happens. Several studies has been made in the area of employability of the people
with disabilitites. For Ismail (2003) reported that the Malaysian goverment through Ministry of education started
to establish special education for children with special needs. Studies on the employments of disabled adult also
done by Orpen (1994), Thompson (1994), Kieman (2002). Attempts were also made by researchers to develop
a model of employability for students in general, for instance the study by Kamari (2003). However an
employability model for youth with hearing impairment is not existing. Further studies to understand this
phenomenon are of importance.
A number of questions that arise here are how can youth with hearing empairment can be employed by
hospitability industries?; what are the nature and qualities of the youth with hearing impairment?; what are the
barriers faced by them?; what are the perceptions of the hospitality industries managers towards the youth with
hearing impairment?
(b) Objective (s) of the Research
Objective of this study is to develop an employability model for youth with hearing empairment in hospitality
industry; Special objectives of the study are;
1. to study the nature and qualities of youth with hearing impairment
2. to understand the barriers faced by the youth with hearing impairment
3. to study the hospitality industry managers perception toward youth with hearing impairment
4. to develop an employability model for youth with hearing impairment

Methodology

1. Description of Methodology
This study comprises of the combination of two methods namely survey and case study. Survey will
be conducted using questionnaires to study the nature and qualities of youth with hearing impairment
both graduating senior students and graduates from Polytechnic Johor Bahru. A number of 30 youths
with hearing impairment will be taken as samples in this study. Depth interviews with questioners will
be conducted towards 10 human resource managers of food service and catering companies and
hotels within Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam areas. Data and information to enhance the finding of
this study will also be gathered from the department of special education at the Ministry of Education
in Putrajaya.
The data gathered will be analyzed statistically and qualitatively. A model of employability will be
developed for better understanding on how youth ability with hearing impairment can be employed by
hospitality industry.
