Integrative Performance Task (Research, Geometry, Physics) RAQUEL E.

LIZARDO

Authentic Performance Tasks Using Grasps Format:

Goal of task related to understandings:

To conduct bridge modeling and simulation strength test and to determine if two designs of
truss bridge (characterized by a framework of triangles) differ significantly in terms of flexural
strength (suggestive of the capacity of the bridge to withstand tension)

Role:

A member of a composite team of civil engineers and statisticians commissioned by the
DPWH Bureau of Research and Standards (BRS)

Audience:

Key officials of the DPWH BRS, including its director

Situation or Context of Scenario:

The Bureau of Research and Standard (BRS) of the Department of Public Works and
Highways (DPWH) would like to find out if two designs of truss bridge differ significantly in
terms of flexural strength (flexing/bending is effected by placing a load of pre-determined
weight on top of the bridge model); findings will be used to make decision as regard which
design will be considered in constructing an actual bridge that will connect Calumpit,
Bulacan and Balintawak, Quezon City.

Product(s) or Performances for evaluation:

Portfolio which contains video documentation of bridge model construction and flexural
strength test simulation in CD format, tables of raw and processed data, and t-test worked
computations

Standards for evaluation:

accuracy of measurement and scaling

Narrative of the Performance Tasks:

The prolonged plight of most residents in the town of Calumpit in Bulacan due to heavy
flooding brought by typhoon Pedring has strongly prompted key government agencies to
come up with means and measures to better facilitate relief and rescue operations in the
town in times of calamities.

video documentation of bridge model construction and flexural strength test simulation in
CD format, tables of raw and processed data, and t-test worked computations will be
evaluated by key officials of the DPWH BRS so as to make a sound decision as to which
