The Imparfait is most probably so named because the
time span of the action involved is not clearly defined. This is because the process rather than the accomplishment of the action is emphasized. Students of French, however, may think it is so named because of the difficulty of mastering perfectly its usage.
The equivalent of the imparfait in English are two past constructions: 1. WAS ING 2. USED TO. I was singing (Emphasizes the process) I used to sing (Implies Repetition)
These two constructions ALWAYS take the imparfait in French.
You will also find the imparfait in English with the regular past construction: I sang.
If this I sang CAN be replaced with either "I was singing" or "I used to sing", it will take the Imparfait.
EX: -When I was young, I sang (I used to sing) in a chorus. Quand jtais jeune, je chantais dans un choeur.
-I sang while they listened. (I was singing while they were listening) Je chantais tandis quils coutaient.
The above rules cover probably more than 95 per cent of the use of the Imparfait in French. Now lets look at the concept of the Imparfait:
Sometimes the above rules cannot be applied. Elle parlait Anglais (She spoke English) So we must understand the underlying concepts of the Imparfait
Use the Imparfait when the time span of the action is not clearly defined, because the process is emphasized: Il semblait la vendre aux enchres (He seemed to be auctioning it off)
Use the imparfait when there is repetition unless the number of repetitions itself is defined (ie jai chant une fois, deux fois..) Je cuisinais chaque mardi. (I cooked every Tuesday)
As a result:
The verbs vouloir, pouvoir, savoir, connaitre, penser, rver, songer, croire and other verbs that express actions of the mind take the Imparfait unless the action occurs in a relatively definite time frame. This is so because the time span of such actions is hard to define, and the process is automatically emphasized. Je pensais que je la connaissais (I thought I knew her)
Descriptions take the Imparfait, again because the time span tends to be very blurry: Les nuages stiraient dans le ciel: The clouds stretched out in the sky.
The verb avoir used as to own takes the imparfait. Javais une voiture. I had a car
The verb tre almost always take the imparfait. Jtais Paris cet t. I was in Paris this summer
I didnt know translates as Je ne savais pas.
In the present, the expressions (I am) Going to (eat) (I) Just (ate) translate respectively with the verbs Aller and Venir * Je vais manger Je viens de manger)
The past takes the imparfait in French: I was going to eat Jallais manger I had just eaten Je venais de manger
As a conclusion, let me say that the Imparfait is somewhat similar in essence to the Pass Simple, an explanation of which you will find in the advanced section. In contrast with the Pass Compos (which we will tackle next month), the Imparfait transports the reader to the moment when the action was taking place. With Elle lisait un livre, the listener has one foot in the past and one foot in the present. With Elle a lu un livre, the listener is presented with a fact, a statement, an occurrence, a remark which in no way carries him or her away from the present moment.

The Imparfait The imperfect ( l'imparfait) expresses or describes continued, repeated, habitual actions or incomplete actions, situations, or events in the past. The imperfect describes what was going on at an indefinite time in the past or what used to happen. The imperfect can be translated by would when it implies used to. The imperfect is a simple tense that does not require a helping verb.
The imperfect is formed by dropping the ons ending from the present tense nous form of the verb and adding the following endings:
The imparfait of regular verbs Table 1 shows how the imparfait is formed with regular verbs.
Here are two examples: Pendant mon enfance, je lisais beaucoup. (During my childhood I read [used to read, would read] a lot.) Je regardais la tl quand le tlphone a sonn. (I was watching TV when the phone rang.) Verbs such as tudier (to study), rire (to laugh), sourire (to smile), and vrifier (to check) already end in ions in the present. In the imperfect, an extra i is necessary in the nous and vous forms: Nous tudiions pendant des heures. (We were studying for hours.) Vous riiez trop. (You were laughing too much.) The following verbs have spelling changes in the imperfect: Verbs ending in cer change c to before a to maintain the soft c sound in the je, tu, il, and ils forms: La voiture avanait lentement. (The car was advancing slowly.) Commenciezvous vous inquiter? (Were you beginning to get worried?) Verbs ending in ger insert a silent e between g and a to maintain the softg sound in the je, tu, il, and ils forms: Il mangeait si vite. (He was eating so quickly.) Nous mangions toujours dans ce restaurant. (We always ate at that restaurant.) Irregular verbs follow the same rules for the formation of the imperfect as do regular verbs. The following is a list of the nous form of the most common irregular verbs. To form the imperfect, simply drop the ons and add the imperfect endings given earlier: aller (to go): nous allons avoir (to have): nous avons boire (to drink): nous buvons conduire (to drive): nous conduisons connatre (to know): nous connaissons courir (to run): nous courons craindre (to fear): nous craignons croire (to believe): nous croyons devoir (to have to): nous devons dire (to say, to tell): nous disons dormir (to sleep): nous dormons crire (to write): nous crivons faire (to make, to do): nous faisons lire (to read): nous lisons mettre (to put): nous mettons offrir (to offer): nous offrons ouvrir (to open): nous ouvrons plaire (to please): nous plaisons pouvoir (to be able to): nous pouvons prendre (to take): nous prenons recevoir (to receive): nous recevons savoir (to know): nous savons suivre (to follow): nous suivons tenir (to hold): nous tenons valoir (to be worth): nous valons venir (to come): nous venons vivre (to live): nous vivons voir (to see): nous voyons vouloir (to wish, to want): nous voulons Note: Falloir (to be necessary) and pleuvoir (to rain) are used only in the il form: ilfallait (it was necessary) and il pleuvait (it was raining). Note: The only verb that does not follow the rule for the formation of the imperfect is tre (to be), whose imperfect stem is t: j'tais, tu tais, il tait, nous tions, vous tiez, ils taient.
The imperfect tense in French The imperfect tense is generally used to say "was doing" or "used to". For example: il travaillait trs dur he used to work very hard j'y allais souvent I used to go there often avant d'avoir la voiture, je prenais le train before I got the car, I used to use the train Suggest a change / proposez une modification How to form the imperfect tense As you can see from the above examples, the imperfect tense in French is a single word, like the present tense. It is generally formed as follows: Take the nous form of the present tense and remove the -ons to form the stem; Add the appropriate ending -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient. Here is a complete example with the verb donner: Infinitive nous form Stem Imperfect tense donner donnons donn- je donn + ais je donnais tu donn + ais tu donnais il/elle donn + ait il/elle donnait nous donn + ions nous donnions vous donn + iez vous donniez ils/elles donn + aient ils/elles donnaient Here is an example of an -ir verb. Note that all of the forms of the imperfect tense have -ss- (as does the nous present tense form nous finissons). Infinitive nous form Stem Imperfect tense Finir finissons finiss- je finiss + ais je finissais tu finiss + ais tu finissais il/elle finiss + ait il/elle finissait nous finiss + ions nous finissions vous finiss + iez vous finissiez ils/elles finiss + aient ils/elles finissaient Here is an example of an irregular verb. The verb dormir (to sleep) has the nous present tense form nous dormons, and so its imperfect tense is as follows: Infinitive nous form Stem Imperfect tense dormir dormons dorm- je dorm + ais je dormais tu dorm + ais tu dormais il/elle dorm + ait il/elle dormait nous dorm + ions nous dormions vous dorm + iez vous dormiez ils/elles dorm + aient ils/elles dormaient In fact, the imperfect tense of most irregular verbs turns out to be quite simple, because the nous present tense form is often quite simple: With the majority of verbs, regular or irregular, the imperfect tense is based on the infinitive minus the 'ending' (-er, -re, -oir, -ire etc). With regular -ir verbs, remember the -ss-; with irregular -ir verbs, you generally just remove the -ir. Imperfect tense of tre This verb is a notable and important exception. Its nous present tense form is nous sommes (we are), but the imperfect tense is based on the stem t-. So here is the imperfect tense form in full: Infinitive nous form Stem Imperfect tense tre sommes t- j' t + ais j' tais tu t + ais tu tais il/elle t + ait il/elle tait nous t + ions nous tions vous t + iez vous tiez ils/elles t + aient ils/elles taient
The French imperfect (imparfait) is a descriptive past tense which indicates an ongoing state of being or a repeated or incomplete action. The beginning and end of the state of being or action are not indicated, and the imperfect is very often translated in English as "was" or "was ___-ing." The imperfect can indicate any of the following:
I. Habitual actions or states of being
Quand j'tais petit, nous allions la plage chaque semaine. When I was young, we used to go to the beach every week.
L'anne dernire, je travaillais avec mon pre. I worked with my father last year.
II. Physical and emotional descriptions: time, weather, age, feelings
Il tait midi et il faisait beau. It was noon and the weather was nice.
Quand il avait 5 ans, il avait toujours faim. When he was five, he was always hungry.
III. Actions or states of an unspecified duration
Je faisais la queue parce que j'avais besoin de billets. I stood in line because I needed tickets.
Il esprait te voir avant ton dpart. He was hoping to see you before you left.
IV. Background information in conjunction with the pass compos
J'tais au march et j'ai achet des pommes. I was at the market and I bought some apples.
Il tait la banque quand il l'a trouv. He was at the bank when he found it.
V. Wishes or suggestions
Ah ! Si j'tais riche ! Oh, if only I were rich!
Si nous sortions ce soir ? How about going out tonight?
VI. Conditions in si clauses
Si j'avais de l'argent, j'irais avec toi. If I had some money, I would go with you.
S'il voulait venir, il trouverait le moyen. If he wanted to come, he would find a way.
VII. The expressions tre en train de and venir de in the past
J'tais en train de faire la vaisselle. I was (in the process of) doing the dishes.
Il venait d'arriver. He had just arrived. French imperfect conjugations are very easy, as the imperfect of virtually all verbsregular and irregularis formed the same way: drop the -ons ending from the present indicative nousform of the verb and adding the imperfect endings.
tre is the only irregular verb in the imperfect, because the present tense nous sommes has no -ons to drop. So it has the irregular stem t- and uses the same endings as all other verbs.
As in many other tenses, spelling change verbs, that is, verb which end in -cer and -ger, have minor spelling changes in the imperfect.
Verbs that end in -ier have an imperfect root that ends in i, so end with double i in the nousand vous form of the imperfect. This isn't irregular, but it looks kind of weird.
French imperfect conjugations
Here are the imperfect endings and conjugations for the regular verbs parler (to speak) andfinir (to finish), the -ier verb tudier (to study), the spelling change verb manger (to eat), and the irregular verb tre (to be):
Pronoun Ending parler > parl- finir > finiss- tudier > tudi- manger > mange- tre > t- je (j') -ais parlais finissais tudiais mangeais tais Tu -ais parlais finissais tudiais mangeais tais Il -ait parlait finissait tudiait mangeait tait Nous -ions parlions finissions tudiions mangions tions Vous -iez parliez finissiez tudiiez mangiez tiez Ils -aient parlaient finissaient tudiaient mangeaient taient
When to use the imperfect tense The imperfect tense is used to describe things that used to happen regularly in the past: Quand j'tais petite, je jouais tous les jours (When I was little, I used to play everyday) Avant, je faisais du sport tous les matins (I used to do sport every morning) The imperfect tense is also used to talk about what something was like in the past: Quand j'tais en Australie, il faisait beau tous les jours (When I was in Australia, the weather was nice everyday) Comment tait ton voyage? (What was your trip like?) Qu'est-ce que tu faisais la maison? (What were you doing at home?) Il y avait beaucoup de monde dans le restaurant (There were lots of people in the restaurant)
IMPARFAIT VERSUS PASSE COMPOSE http://french.about.com/library/weekly/aa060799t.htm
I suggest you learn by heart the 2 sentences below. Dont think in term of actions, actions can be in both PC or imperfect. Imparfait = what was happening all around you (including you), background. Also ongoing events, habits, what used to be. Pass compos = what took place at that very moment: a specific event or a succession of specific events, the main storyline. NOW LETS BE MORE SPECIFIC: A HABITS VERSUS SPECIFIC EVENTS The imperfect describes habitual actions in the past. The PC describes what took place, specific events. Le lundi, je dnais chez ma soeur / Un lundi, nous avons dn au restaurant. On Mondays, I used to have dinner at my sisters / One Monday, we dined in a restaurant. In this case, what you need to look for are the time setting words : le lundi (habit) versus un lundi(specific). B WHEN YOU ARE TELLING A STORY The pass compos d escribes actions that constitute the storyline. It tells the series of specific events that took place. Some expressions of time tend to be followed by the PC in a story ; dabord, puis, ensuite, enfin, finalement, soudain, tout coup, tout de suite since they usually introduce specific events. Memorize them, theyre a big help. The imperfect describes the background, it sets the scene: the date, the time of the day, the weather, the scene (what people were doing).. external circumstances, age, appearance, physical traits, physical condition, feelings, attitudes. personal circumstances. C IN THE SAME SENTENCE The Imparfait describes ongoing background actions, what was happening at that time (often with a to be + ing construction in English) these actions had started before, and may continue after. The PC will describe a specific action that took place at a precise time as the background action was going on: Ils sont entrs (specific even short in lenght) pendant que nous dormions (ongoing action longer in lenght). They came in as we were sleeping. Sometimes, the same tense is used for the 2 actions if they are of same length: - 2 actions that went on for some time: Pendant que jetudiais, tu regardais la tl. While I was studying, you were watching TV. - or 2 specific shorter actions: Tu es rentre quand je suis sortie. You came in as I was going out.
4 Here is a typical story with the explanation for the tenses Ctait le 3 juillet (background). Il faisait beau (background). Les oiseaux chantaient (background), le soleil brillait (background). Javais vingt ans (background) et je me promenais dans Paris (background). Gnralement (habit so imparfait will follow), je passais mes vacances avec mes parents. Pendant que jattendais mon repas (ongoing event), jai commenc me sentir mal (specific event). Soudainement (introduces PC), je me suis vanouie et je suis tombe par terre (succession of specific events, storyline). Le serveur a tlphon aux pompiers (specific event, storyline). Ils sont arrivs trs vite (specific event, storyline). Je me suis rveille (specific event), mais je me sentais encore faible (ongoing). Alors, les pompiers ont dcid (specific event/storyline) de memmener lhpital http://www.columbia.edu/~fms5/fimp.html FOR IMPARFAIT ET PASSE COMPOSE
Imperfect Versus Pass Compos The pass compos expresses a completed action that occurred at a specific time in the past. This action happened at one moment in time and could have been captured by the click of an instamatic camera.
With that in mind, the following words, phrases, and expressions often require the use of the pass composbecause they specify a definite past time: l'anne passe (last year) avanthier (the day before yesterday) d'abord (at first) enfin (finally) ensuite (then, next) l't/l'hiver pass (last summer/winter) finalement (finally) une fois (one time) hier (yesterday) hier soir (last night) l'autre jour (the other day) ce jourl (that day) un jour (one day) le mois pass (dernier) (last month) la semaine passe (dernire) (last week) soudain (suddenly) tout coup (suddenly) The imperfect, on the other hand, expresses an action that continued in the past over an indefinite, undetermined period of time and could have been captured by a video camera. The imperfect also describes what was going on in the past when another action or event took place in the pass compos: Il sortait quand je suis arriv() (He was going out when I arrived.) When would means used to, use the imperfect: Quand j'tais jeune je lisais beaucoup. (When I was young, I would read a lot.) The following expressions generally imply repetitious or habitual past actions and, therefore, require the imperfect: autrefois (formerly) chaque jour (semaine, mois, anne) (each [every] day, week, month, year) de temps autre (from time to time) de temps en temps (from time to time) d'habitude (usually) d'ordinaire (usually, generally) en ce tempsl (at that time) en gnral (generally) frquemment (frequently) gnralement (generally) habituellement (habitually) parfois (sometimes) quelquefois (sometimes) souvent (often) toujours (always) tous les jours (mois) (every day, month) tout le temps (all the time) Verbs that indicate a state of mind in the past are generally used in the imperfect. aimer (to like, love) croire (to believe) dsirer (to desire) esprer (to hope) tre (to be) penser (to think) pouvoir (to be able to) prfrer (to prefer) regretter (to regret, be sorry) savoir (to know [how]) vouloir (to want) When, however, the state of mind occurred at a specific time in the past, the passcompos is used: Je ne pouvais pas l'aider. (I couldn't help him.) Je n'ai pas pu l'aider hier. (I couldn't help him yesterday.) Differences in the use of the pass compos and the imperfect are summarized in Table 1.
