We at USDA enjoyed working with
Susan over the years and she was al-
ways there for us when we need-
ed assistance, guidance, advice, or
were in a pinch. I often told others,
its a good thing we had Susan
involved because she always knows
what to do or can fnd an answer
fast. Susan has a knack for
event planning, organization, and
logistics, but more importantly, all of
the details often overlooked and the
little nuances that make meetings,
events, and marketing activities suc-
cessful. That is one of the reasons
why I feel that Cotton Incorporat-
eds conferences and events over
the years have been so impressive
and professional.

There are few aspects of the sporting
world that call for as much dedication as
the committed archer. Despite modern
technology, shooting a bow well requires
a serious investment of time, a studious at-

at it, day after day after day. These were

If frost-planting is not your style, and you
od, then now is the time to break ground.
You need to turn the soil, get oxygen into
the soil profle and give the dead organics
on top a chance to work for you espe-
cially in heavy clays or sandy areas. North
Carolina has 3 primary planting zones:
Mountains, Piedmont and Coastal Plain
and just as each has a different planting schedule they
present different charac-
teristics and require different soil prep
to make your garden grow. Insert side note
here: I have read some food plot prognosticators
give a blanket formula or remedy for how to in-
stall a food plot: disc X pounds of fertilizer Y
pounds of seed drag in wallah.... blah, blah,

variety can meet all the needs of any one
wildlife species on a year-round basis. I
advise combining a variety of different
forages into your food planting strategy
to include both warm and cool season forages creating
an excellent master
plan to maximize the benefts of each.
Experiment with different varieties and
planting combinations as your food plots
work for you to fnd the most productive
results. Keep records what you do, what
you plant, weather conditions, any cata-
season-to-season, youll start to see patterns that other hunters just dont see. This major advantage in the feld.

FINDING THE RIGHT
OUTFITTER
FOR YOUR AFRICAN
By Willem Frost
The success of an African safari usually
starts with the selection of the outftter
with whom the safari is to be booked.
The outftters and professional hunters
outnumber the available species to
hunt by many times and it can be
quite a daunting task to fnd the right
outftter for your African adventure,
especially for frst timers. It is thus
understandable that the international
sport hunter can be bewildered after a
visit to a hunting show where he may
meet several outftters and professional
hunters, some of whom will tell him
almost anything he wants to hear. The
information overload at some of
the major hunting shows can be
simply overwhelming, leaving the
prospective
hunter none the wiser.
So, how do you select an outftter for
your trip to Africa? Below are a few
pointers which may be helpful
especially for the novice African bow
hunter. Following these will not
necessarily guarantee success, but it
will certainly reduce the risk of a
disappointing experience.
Approaching a booking agent is one
option but it is no guarantee of fnding
the right outftter for a specifc hunt.
Booking agents usually represent some
of the better known names in
the hunting business, but they normally
have only a limited number of
outftters on their book and they
promote only
these. They work for a commission
and will usually pitch the outftter that
pays the best commission rates

or that offers other incentives.
Website research can be extremely useful.
Outftter websites usually provide some
information on the species availability,
the accommodations, rates and costs, etc.
However, look out for obvious exagger-
ations. A common one is the brag about
being the absolute best in the industry
nobody else can supposedly provide a
hunt of similar quality. This is obviously
to be taken with a pinch of salt. There
are
always a number of outftters who could
meet the hunters needs and who could
provide a memorable hunting experience.
Most of the braggers have no basis for a
comparison, or grounds on which to base
their claim of being better than all other outftters. Treat

to the outftters inexperience and
them with caution. If you want to have
some fun, ask the bragging outftter for
a copy of the market rating which has
found him to be numero uno.
Also look out for obvious omissions
on the website. Is there a price-list? Bow
hunters should specifcally look
for evidence that this is a bow hunting
outftter. Do you see only rifes on the
photos on the website or are there bows
as well? What do they tell you on the
website about the blinds, the set-up
at the waterholes and walk-and-stalk
hunting? Do they have basic equipment
like a bow press to do emergency
repairs? Is there any evidence of a
commitment to ethical hunting practic-
es? Which associations do they belong
to? Specifcally, are they members of the
local Professional Hunters Association
and are you happy to hunt with them
if they are not?
The majority of outftters in Africa,
by far, are rife hunters. Few will
however say no to the bow hunter
when he comes along. There are only a
relatively small group of outftters that
specialize in bow hunting. It would
be advisable for the bow hunter to
book with one of these established
bow hunting outftters in order to
reduce the risk of a safari not meeting
with expectations or promises due
lack of bow hunting skills. Some bow
hunters insist on hunting only on bow
hunting only concessions; make
