System Analysis and Design
Course Credits: 3
The goal of this course is to give you the foundation for building effective information systems. The course
will cover the concepts, techniques and tools needed to identify information needs, analyze existing
systems and design new ones. The human issues and interpersonal skills, which play a large role in
systems development, represent an important thread of the course.
The course will cover the various duties and skills of a systems analyst and discuss in depth the stages of
the systems development life cycle. Students will use computerized tools for assignments, including a
CASE software tool (Visible Analyst) and have a chance to demonstrate organizational, group,
presentation and communication skills.
Even if a student is not planning to pursue a career in Information Systems, this course has something
important to offer. It will increase the ability to communicate with technical personnel. It will give a better
understanding of the difficulties involved in designing systems, and will help make contributions to that
process more meaningful.
The course is designed to address various learning styles by utilizing different methods of working: lecture
and discussion, demonstrations, individual hands-on tutorials, as well as projects. Students will have the
opportunity to use many kinds of skills: analytical, writing, research, technical, practical and presentation.
