He writes in May 2001:
I built one of the designs (the one by Nigel, KG7SG) and it worked great. However, being the paranoid type I decided to design my own
electrically isolated version. I figure it would be preferred in a field day situation with questionable rig grounding.
The biggest challenge was powering the optos on the radio side. The 8v line coming from the 706 can source at most 10 mA (per spec).
This design pulls an average of less than 0.5 mA. This voltage can be pulled from either the ACC connector or the michrophone jack. If
the microphone jack is already being used, it is likely connected to an isolated audio interface. Many isolated audio interface degins
already exist, so I decided not to include that on the schematic.

Do I Need to do anything to my rig to set it up?
4nce a'ain, read your manual. +!e software will want to know t!e ri'-s &()V %ddress and its baud rate. Cor more modern transcei*ers, set t!e
menus for B+ranscei*e #odeB, and B%utoB Baud Rate. Cor example, on my (&)@9A, t!e address is .A! and baud rate is set to %uto. ( tried all
software at rates up to t!e maximum of ,9,2// baud and t!e @9A reco'niKed t!em all. (f your older radio !as a fixed baud rate, be sure to set
your software to matc!.

Theory of Operation
+!e (&4# &+),@ R"282 computer le*el con*erter is bot! costly and requires external power. By usin' a c!eap, readily a*ailable ultra low
power ++7 to R"282 con*erter (&, t!e 7inear 7+&,8D8, one can make a self)contained unit, w!ic! deri*es its power from t!e serial port itself.
%lt!ou'! t!e (B# =& serial port was desi'ned wit!out a D& power pin, early mouse desi'ners fi'ured out a way to squeeKe some low)current
D& power from R+" or D+R lines or from B4+< in t!e case of t!e desi'n s!own abo*e$. +!e 7+&,8D8 draws only about 22/u% at . *olts ) far
less t!an most mouse circuitry. +!e abo*e circuit s!ould work wit! Pust about any serial port, includin' some ot!erwise finicky =& laptop ports.
+!e 7+& ,8D8 (& does all t!e work and requires only 9 capacitors to c!ar'e t!e internal pump circuits. %lt!ou'! one can use tiny /.,uf
non)polariKed caps for t!e 9 c!ar'e caps, ( c!ose some /.9@uf miniature polariKed radial electrolytics to be extra sure of speedy response
times in t!e !eat of D6 ; . %ll parts are a*ailable at t!e time of t!is writin' online from Radio"!ack.com, but mi'!t be !ard to find at t!e retail
stores. ( !a*e no affiliation to Radio "!ack, but enPoy t!eir excellent website and *ariety of fairly c!eap parts.
( c!ose to use some pre)punc!ed 'eneral purpose D(= circuit board, a ,A)pin D(= socket, 9 standoffs, 2 'rommets and a tiny aluminum case to
wire t!e circuit ) w!ic! would add about IA to t!e cost. %nal)retenti*e !ams can etc! and drill t!eir own circuit boardsG (-m sure some
industrious !ams will fi'ure out a way to packa'e t!e w!ole circuit inside a DB9 s!ellG
(nstead of purc!asin' a DB9 female connector, ( pilfered t!e connector and cable from an old broken #icrosoftQ serial mouse. ( not only 'ot a
BfreeB DB9 connector, but ( found t!at t!e 9 conductor s!ielded cable used by t!e mouse already !ad my . connections made to t!e ri'!t pinsG
( e*en used a couple of feet of t!e same cable after cuttin' off t!e 8 unused leads$ as a sin'le conductor s!ielded cable to run from t!e
aluminum box to t!e ,:D inc! miniature p!one plu' for my (&)@9A. 4ne builder found t!at !e !ad a s!ort in !is mouse cable, so definitely test
it t!orou'!ly before usin' my mouse su''estion. (f t!e t!ou'!t of !armin' an innocent mouse is too !ard to take, buy a db9 female and
plastic or metal s!ell.
(#=4R+%N+: (f you want to use a DB2. serial connector instead, remember t!at t!e 'round pin is @, D+R is pin 2/, R+" is pin 9, +xD is pin 2
and RxD is pin 8G +!is would certainly 'i*e you more room in t!e casin' to !ouse t!e circuitry if you decide to 'o t!at route.

(com appears to deli'!t in c!ar'in' outra'eous prices for all transcei*er accessories,
so many <ams impro*ise instead. % few circuits !a*e been publis!ed for &()V
interfaces, most of w!ic! use t!e #%6282 (&. <ere is a *ery simple &()V interface,
ori'inally described by 4J20E. (-*e made small c!an'es to t!e modem control
si'nals connections. %lt!ou'! t!e circuit doesn-t conform exactly to t!e R")282
specification, it does work well and !as t!e ad*anta'e of bein' easily constructed
inside a 9 pin D)type s!ell. =lease note t!at t!e resistor *alue 9J@ means 9@// o!ms.
+!e transistor types are not critical, ( Pust !appen to !a*e plenty of 2N2222%s.
(-*e used it on *arious =&-s and a Dell 7atitude Notebook wit! bot! an (&@8. and
(&@/A#k((?. No problems !a*e been experienced e*en at ,92// baud wit! t!e
(&@/A, so ( would definitely recommend t!is simple interface. (f a =++ function is
required from t!e &4# port, use pin @ R+"$ to pro*ide t!is function.
