METHOD STATEMENT FOR INSTALLATION OF
SLOPE PROTECTION SYSTEM USING
MAC.R.O SYSTEM, HEA PANELS & REINFORCED ENKAMAT

1.0 IMPORTANT NOTE

The methodology of slope protection suggested in here applies to combination of
Maccaferri MAC.RO. SYSTEM HEA PANELSs, ROCKFALL NETTING &
ENKAMAT 7018 as the slope surface protection medium. For simplicity the word HEA-
RE is used to describe the combination of these two materials.

Maccaferri does not supply rock bolts and accessories etc and these are to be sourced from
approved suppliers.

In order to minimize wastage during overlap, it is recommended to carry out mapping of
the site to determine the exact length of the HEA-RE rolls, in consultation with the
manufacturers representative. This exercise should be carried out before placing the order.

2.0 INSTALLATION METHODOLOGY

2.1 SLOPE SURFACE PREPARATION

Slope surface shall be prepared as per the designers specifications. Loose rock particles and
unstable soil which could detach easily from the slope surface shall be removed.

2.2 PLACING OF HEA-RE

The top row of the soil nails shall be installed initially, with the rock bolts protruding out of
the slope by 1m, to provide a cantilevered post support for the interceptor apron.

Phase 1 Drilling
Drilling can be done by either air-flushed percussion drilling, augering or rotary wash boring
drilling depending on ground condition. The size and the inclination of the drill shall be as
per construction drawing. It is important to produce drilling equipment with sufficient power
and rigid drill rod. The hole shall be flushed with air or water before insertion of nail to
remove any possible collapse materials which can reduce the grout-ground interface
resistance.

Phase 2 Insertion of Nail & Grouting
The nail shall be prepared with adequate centralisers at appropriate spacing and for proper
grout cover for first defense of corrosion protection. A grouting pipe is normally attached
with the nail reinforcement during inserting the nail into the drilled hole. The grouting is
done from bottom up until fresh grout return is observed from the hole. The normal range of
water/cement ratio of the typical grout mix is from 0.45 to 0.5. Powerful grout is pump is
essential for uninterrupted delivery of grout mix. The grout mix shall be as per specification.
The nail shall be protruding outside the surface for a minimum length of 0.5m. Please refer
the drawing for Phase II, for details.

Phase 3 Installation of the Enkamat
The Enkamat 7018 shall be hauled to the top of the interceptor apron and connected to the
interceptor apron by lacing wire at a suitable spacing as shown in the drawing along the
protruded rock bolt and rolled down to the bottom of the slope. New rolls shall be placed in
the same direction longitudinally overlapping the adjacent roll. A minimum overlap of 100
mm shall be made when joining two panels of Enkamat 7018. All overlaps shall be pinned
at maximum 1.0 m centre to centre. If manual haulage is not possible, mechanical or other
means (either crane, or a suitably designed scaffolding support system) shall be used for
installation. The installation shall be executed from the center portion of the slope moving
towards the edge of the slope.

Phase 4 Installation of the Rockfall Netting
The Rockfall Netting shall be hauled to the top of the interceptor apron and connected to the
interceptor apron by an approved quality of U-bolt at a suitable spacing as shown in the
drawing along the protruded rock bolt and rolled down to the bottom of the slope. Upon
reaching the bottom of the slope, the Rockfall Netting together with Enkamat 7018 shall be
anchored with anchor pin and the excessive length shall be cut off. If manual haulage is not
possible, mechanical or other means (either crane, or a suitably designed scaffolding support
system) shall be used for installation.

New rolls shall be placed in the same direction longitudinally overlapping the adjacent roll.
A minimum overlap of 100 mm shall be made when joining two sheets of Rockfall Netting.
All overlaps shall be pinned at maximum 1.0 m centre to centre.

Intermediate pinning at regular intervals is required to ensure intimate contact between
Rockfall Netting & Enkamat 7018 to the underlying soil. The intermediate pinning shall be
made at the rate of 1 anchor pin every 2m. Pinning of the overlaps as well as intermediate
pinning , shall be carried out using a hooked 12mm diameter re-bars having a length of 1m.
The dimensions of the pins are shown in construction drawing.

Phase 5 - Installation of HEA panels
The HEA panels shall be hauled to the top of the interceptor apron and connected to the
interceptor apron by an approved quality of U-bolt at a suitable spacing as shown in the
drawing, along the protruded soil nail. They shall then be very carefully draped over the
installed rock bolts, keeping the rock bolt under the mesh intersection as shown (refer Phase
3 drawing for details). Wherever this is not possible, the rock bolt should be enclosed within
an additional steel cable provided as shown in the drawing. Care should be taken to tighten
the HEA panel mesh around the soil nail by pulling manually. Longitudinally adjacent
panels shall be connected with a steel wire rope having the same characteristics as the main
wire rope, which acts as a lacing cable and will be bolted together using U-bolt. The
technique for lacing shall follow the single loop-double loop procedure outlined for lacing
wire.

Phase 6 Rock Bolting
After completion of HEA panel installation, a heavily zinc coated base plate of size 250 mm
x 250 mm shall be tightened on the rock bolt using locking nut and pulled up tight, taking
care that the base plate maintains a tight contact with as much of the HEA panel wire rope,
as possible. Please refer the drawing for details.

Phase 7 Concrete Capping
Concrete capping shall be provided as per construction drawing using concrete grade G-20
with proper formwork. Formwork shall be removed at least 21 days from the date of
concreting.

Phase 8 Top soil filling and hydroseeding
A top soil layer with thickness of 10 mm to 20 mm shall be placed on top of the treated
slope, and spread evenly. Hydroseeding with suitable vegetation shall be performed with a
suitable species of grass like signal grass. If the slope is found to be too steep to retain the
soil layer, then special techniques like using mulch mixed with an adhesive compound shall
be used to ensure proper hydroseeding and growth of vegetation. Seed mix and fertilizer
shall be very site specific and local experts or specialist hydro-seeding contractors may need
to be consulted to assist in the correct selection.
