G The Glendon Association
The Glendon Association is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to understanding the
dynamics of self-destructive behavior and to alleviating the resulting social problems of
child abuse, suicide, violence, substance abuse, and disturbed family relationships. Of
particular interest is FAST, The Firestone Assessment of Self-Destructive Thoughts
(FAST), new from The Psychological Corporation, provides a unique view of your client's
self-destructive thought processes. The approach, which integrates cognitive and
psychoynamic concepts, is based on the clinical theory of Robert Firestone. This new scale
assesses the levels of self-destructive thoughts a person is experiencing, along the
Continuum of Negative Thought Patterns, which may lead to varying degrees of self-
destructive behavior. The FAST consists of 84 items that clients endorse on a 5-point,
Likert-type scale from "never" to "almost always." They consist of self-destructive thoughts
taken directly from clinical material derived from longitudinal study of client's negative thought processes. The
suicide risk subscale provides a brief measure of your client's suicidal potential. This new instrument is useful as
a screener for persons entering psychological treatment. FAST scores indicate areas in which the client is
experiencing the greatest degree of distress, allowing you to focus your interventions. It will also serve as a brief
pre-and post-therapy measure.

G Human Genome Project
The Human Genome Project is expected to produce a sequence of DNA representing
the functional blueprint and evolutionary history of the human species. However, only
about 3% of this sequence is thought to specify the portions of our 50,000 to 100,000
genes that encode proteins. Thus an important part of basic and applied genomics is to
identify and localize these genes in a process known as transcript mapping. When genes
are expressed, their sequences are first converted into messenger RNA transcripts, which can be isolated
in the form of complementary DNAs (cDNAs). Approximately half of all human genes had been
sampled as of 15 June, 1996. On this web site you can browse the Human Genome by chromosome!

G Juliet Mitchell on 'Sexuality, Psychoanalysis & Social Change'
I am interested in raising a number of what seem to me to be urgent questions about our theory and practice by
exploring these in the light of social changes. For me, the problems revolve around our understanding of
heterosexuality. So long as we do not try to correlate our theories of psychic life with social conditions - whether
these seem 'universal' or specific - without our intending it, they will become reflective of these very conditions.

A new web page devoted to online papers on consciousness. This has links to about 180 papers on the
topic, sorted into 22 categories ("The concept of consciousness", "The explanatory gap", etc.). The
majority of the papers are philosophical, but there are also quite a few empirical papers.Suggestions for
addition are welcome. I hope this encourages the practice of putting one's research online, which is
already the norm in disciplines such as physics and computer science. (Wherever possible, I suggest
retaining the right to self-publication when an article is published. This is standard practice at some
journals, and most other journals seem to find it agreeable.) For other sources of online philosophy, see
my previously advertised page of "individuals with online papers in philosophy": http://ling.ucsc.edu/

humor. This one is at: http://ling.ucsc.edu/~chalmers/phil-humor.html. Suggestions for additions of all
sorts are welcome.-Dave Chalmers.

individual relationship and in particular of inside-outside memory and communication processes, trying to
understand the static-conservative and dynamic-creative functions of "learning from experience" in the individual
and in the human groups. Psychomedia is centered on psychiatry, psychgology, psychoanalysis and
psychotherapy and obviously on the relation between mental health and communication. The idea was to group
in a single big web site the internet pages of all the must important psychoanalytically oriented associations,

G Schizophrenia and Depression Research Survey Site
This is a new site but is posted on NARSAD and several other sites. I have identified
unsuspected separation traumas in the first two years of life which correlate with the later
development of Schizophrenia, and the identical traumas in the next year of life correlate
with the later development of non-psychotic Major Depression. Sarnoff Mednick of USC tested and
confirmed one of the many traumas on the 6,000 patients in the Finnish database on Schizophrenia.
The web site also provides the latest information about new theoretical concepts, and the textbook --
which is described on the site -- was nominated for the Pulitzer for Advancements in the Field of
Psychiatry. The primary purpose of the web site is research, but it also provides new information on
Schizophrenia and Depression, and it describes the new Unification Theory of Mental illness.

G Thought Field Therapy in the UK
"Thought Field Therapy is defined as "...a treatment for psychological disturbances which provides a
code that when applied to a psychological problem an individual is focusing upon will eliminate
perturbations in the Thought Field, the fundamental cause of all negative emotions. This code is elicited
using a causal diagnostic procedure through which the TFT algorithms were developed." The treatment
itself involves the stimulation of identified energy meridian points on the body in a defined and precise
sequence. Most individuals treated in this way report complete resolution of their problem in a matter of
minutes. Research in 1986 (replicated in 1996) has shown TFT to have a success rate of up to 97% in
the treatment of anxiety and phobias. Further information and research data can be obtained at The

Keywords separated by a space are automatically searched together (myocardial infarction). To find

To find two words together in the same line, separate them with a semicolon (pediatric;clinic).
Enter keyword(s):
Case sensitive. Check this box if you want to find only keywords containing uppercase letter(s), such
as proper names or keywords in titles. This finds AIDS but not aids. Leaving the box unchecked (the
default) finds all occurrences of a word, whether or not it contains capital letters.
Partial match. Check this box if you want to find partial matches to a word (typing imag finds image,
images, imaging as well as imaginary). Use with care, as this may lead to excessive or irrelevant "hits."
