throughout North America for over twenty years. As
well as leading her own groups, she has performed with
Chucho Valdez, Te Brubeck Brothers, Neil Swainson,
Hugh Fraser and VEJI, and the Spokane Jazz Orchestra.

Find out what happens when a marathon-running, ro-
mance-writing, feisty entrepreneur opens a B&B in Spar-
woodand lives to tell the tale. One Book, One Kootenay
shortlist author Bobby Hutchinson brings her lighthearted,
quirky Blue Collar B&B: Adventures in Hospitality at a spe-
cial OBOK shortlist reading on Tuesday, June 17, 7 pm at
the Nelson Public Library.
From her childhood in a coal mining town in the BC in-
terior, Hutchinsons world was all about storytelling, thanks
to her parents. Not content to only read stories (she says that
learning to read was the most signifcant event of her life),
she set out to create her own. She has been a traf c con-
troller, daycare provider, seamstress, clothing designer, and
marathon runner.
Bored with training for the marathon, she made up a story
as she ran, about Phieddipedes, the frst marathoner. She
fnished the Vancouver marathon, submitted that story to the
Chatelaine short story contest, won frst prize, and went on
to become a writer, penning some 55 romance novels to date.
Te frst Blue Collar B&B opened in Vancouver, but that
childhood coal mining setting called, and she relocated in
Sparwood. It was only a matter of time before the stories ac-
cumulated, and Blue Collar B&B: Adventures in Hospitality
was born.
I think writers are born with a genetic quirk, says Hutch-
inson. Tey need stories the way other, normal people need
oxygen and food. Its an addiction. And if they cant fnd an
intriguing story, they simply write one of their own.
Blue Collar B&B is one of three books shortlisted for One
Book, One Kootenay, in which readers vote for the title
they think all Kootenay book lovers should read. South of
Elfrida, short stories by Holley Rubinsky of Kaslo and the
fction title Africas Unfnished Symphony by Fauquier resi-
dent Lucia Mann are also in the running. Copies of all three
shortlisted titles, as well as ballot boxes, are available now in
Kootenay-Boundary libraries.
Hutchinson also reads at Nakusp Library on June 18 and
Grand Forks Library on June 19. One Book, One Kootenay
is an initiative of the Kootenay Library Federation. More in-

Kootenay Mountaineering Club
Celebrates 50th Anniversary
In celebration of 50 years of mountaineering, hik-
ing, climbing, back country skiing, snowshoeing and all
things mountain the KMC is hosting an event on Satur-
day, June 7 to mark the occasion. Originally a chapter of
the Alpine Club of Canada, the KMC has been hosting all
forms of outdoor and mountaineering events since 1964
as an independent organization.
To celebrate, the KMC will host an exciting and in-
formative presentation by Dave Quinn. Folks will recog-
nize Dave as CBC Radio Wests Outdoor Guy. Join us for a
riveting evening tour of some of the major conservation
issues of the Kootenay Region, as seen from the uptracks,
summits, ridges, and descents of some of the areas classic,
and not-so-classic ski traverses. From Darkwoods to the
Goat range, the Central Purcells to the Moyie Range, and
the Flathead to the Central Rockies. Come prepared for
a feast of Kootenay wilderness, and a sense of the pres-
sures shaping its future. Tis is a fantastic opportunity to
be informed and entertained. Dave will also be speaking
about the Jumbo Glacier Resort, a matter that is dear to all
backcountry lovers in the Kootenays.
Te event will be held at the Old Castlegar Teatre, 185

Alexis Phillips, MA, RCC, SFTT, is a registered clinical
counsellor, therapist and trainer, and focusing coordin-
ator. Alexis holds a Master of Arts degree in Counsel-
ling Psychology from the University of British Columbia
(2001). She specializes in working with complex trauma
and has presented on this work at the 2014, 2011 and
2009 World Conferences on Focusing-Oriented Psycho-
therapies in New York. She is currently a clinical coun-
sellor with North Kootenay Lake Community Services
Society and a private practice clinician, working with

Pollution Awareness
Columbia Basin Trusts Know Your Watershed Pro-
gram and Friends of Kootenay Lake teamed up with
Nelson youth to paint yellow fsh by storm drains in the
Rosemont area. Claire de la Salle from Friends of Koo-
tenay Lake said By preventing pollution from entering
storm drains students are helping to keep Kootenay
Lake healthy. Many people dont know that the storm
drain system empties directly into the lake. Painting
yellow fsh by storm drains is done across the country
and can really have a positive impact to reduce pollut-
ants entering our waterways.
Te Trafalgar Leadership class helped to organize the
event with support from teacher Kelly Anast and Mon-
ica Nissen, from Know Your Watershed. Te goal was to
teach fellow students about the importance of keeping
only rain in the drain. In total, there were 67 students
from Trafalgar, South Nelson, and Rosemont schools,
5 teachers, and 11 volunteers, a total of 83 people who
painted 99 storm drains.
Te organizers wish to thank the Columbia Basin Trust
and all the hard working students and volunteers for mak-
ing this day possible!

Spring Bike Rodeo
Elementary school students at Hume and South Nelson
were happy participants at this springs bike rodeo held on
May 22.
Louise Poole, Health Promoting Schools Coordinator
for SD8, Nelson Police Department, Interior Health, Nel-
son & District Credit Union, KidSport, Nelson Sports
Council, Gericks Cycle, Save On Foods, Sacred Ride and
ICBC all sponsored the event that gave several bike hel-
mets and two brand new bikes to some happy students.
Te rodeo focused on road safety and hand signals, cor-
rect helmet ft and bike maintenance and the children got
to ride their bikes through the rodeo course practising
their newly learned skills.
Many students helmets were not adjusted properly;
either too big, too small or too loose. According to the Mc-
Creary Society, the number of concussions has increased
in students from 2008 to 2013 due to a variety of reasons.
Parents need to set a good example and wear their own
helmets and ensure that their childs helmet fts the head
properly to prevent concussions. Information on how to

wise, go into a local bike shop to get proper helmet ftting
and to ensure kids bikes are in good shape (tires pumped

Directors Miriam Mason Martineau and Allison Girvan
have collaborated with Homelinks to present Te Musical
Robin Hood. Te play is a fast moving, action packed chil-
drens musical set in a classic struggle of good versus evil. It
is a captivating journey through the time-honoured legend
as Robin Hood and his band of merry outlaws fght for
good against the evil Sherif of Nottingham and his wicked
right-hand man, Guy of Gisborne.
Te Homelinks actors, aged 5 to 15, have been working
together with great passion and heart to present this high-
ly entertaining show to local audiences. Music, humorous
dialogue, fantastic set, costumes and props will be sure to
delight audiences both young and young at heart! Tehome-
schoolers look forward to sharing with you the authentic tale
