Autumn Treasures
Introduction
By Amanda Bennett
Ah, these mornings of early autumn are beautiful! There is a sharp snap in the air, and the cool
morning temperatures are invigorating. The days are growing shorter as the leaves begin to change
colors. Apples and pumpkins and gourds are showing up at the farmers market and produce stand,
and apple cider is simmering with cinnamon in the slow cooker. Its time to rake the leaves, enjoy the
changes, and learn more about this season and its treasures.
With the new Download N Go unit studies, you are about to begin a new kind of learning
experience. Each study is one-week in length, having fve daily lessons with lapbook components for
each day. The name, Download N Go, comes from the concept that these studies are ready to use as
soon as you have downloaded them. No preparation or waiting time or other expensive resources are
required. A few inexpensive items are needed for the lapbooka simple fle folder, a glue stick, safety
scissors, brass brads, and crayons or markers. Thats itsimple, efective, and what a way to learn!
Now that you are beginning Autumn Treasures, the frst in the Download N Go series, get ready for a
wonderful learning adventure about this season and all that it holds. Your child will investigate how
seasons change, what autumn is all about, the life cycle of pumpkins and apples, the way that candy
corn is made, and much more. Each day he will explore and investigate, creating and adding more
learning components to his Autumn Treasures lapbookbuilding a wonderful reminder of all that he
is learning to be enjoyed for years to come.
From developing an understanding of the word season to investigating why leaves change colors,
this is going to be an exciting adventure. Your child will be looking into how nature changes as
autumn moves into your neighborhood.
What are the animals doing in autumn?
What happens on farms now?
How are the leaves changing?
What kinds of foods are favorites in autumn?
There will be science discoveries, such as learning about the cause of seasons and how animals in the
wild use autumn to prepare for winter. Your student will learn a bit of history as he studies the history
of the pumpkin in America, as well as how Johnny Appleseed helped our pioneers spread across
this great land. Geography will make the study of autumn very interestingdid you realize that
while autumn begins in September in the Northern Hemisphere, it begins in March in the Southern
Hemisphere?
So get ready for the adventure, and thanks for spending a week with us as we begin discovering
Autumn Treasures!

Autumn Treasures
Introduction to Lapbooking
By Stephanie Ruby
Have you ever created a lapbook with your child? The lapbooking activities we have designed are
made to be easy enough for a beginner, but meaty enough for children who have been lapbooking
for a long time.
There are only a few items that you need to provide to go along with the activities we have created.
You will need a fle folder, folded so that the outside edges meet in the middle, creating a shutter
book. You will also need scissors, glue, crayons, a stapler, and brass brads.
You may want to save each activity in an envelope until the entire week is complete and then attach
everything to the lapbook on the ffth day. This will allow you to arrange all of the mini-books so that
they ft well. This is not a necessity, mind you, but simply a recommendation that might allow the
process to fow a bit more smoothly.
If you have never created a lapbook before, you may feel a bit intimidated by the process. Take a deep
breath and remember that there is no wrong way to lapbook. The process of lapbooking will vary
from one person to the next, and will be a refection of the individual that created the project.
For those of you who still feel that you need a little more guidance, we have included the following
links to introduce the concept of lapbooking to you and to give you a variety of ideas for your project.
Just remember, the most important part of lapbooking is to have fun with it. The more you and your
children enjoy the activity, the more they will retain.

When autumn ends, we begin a new season. What will the next season be called?
God created earth in such a perfect way that we experience these four seasons in just
the right order and at just the right time to help things grow and for people to be able
to live here. When He created earth, He put it in a very special orbit around the sun,
and this orbit is very important to the seasons here on earth. Lets investigate to fnd
out just what causes seasons.

A Song of Early Autumn
By Richard Watson Gilder (1844-1909)
When late in summer the streams run yellow,
Burst the bridges and spread into bays;
When berries are black and peaches are mellow,
And hills are hidden by rainy haze;
When the goldenrod is golden still,
But the heart of the sunfower is darker and sadder;
When the corn is in stacks on the slope of the hill,
And slides oer the path the striped adder;
When butterfies futter from clover to thicket,
Or wave their wings on the drooping leaf;
When the breeze comes shrill with the call of the cricket,
Grasshoppers rasp, and rustle of sheaf;
When high in the feld the fern-leaves wrinkle,
And brown is the grass where the mowers have mown;
When low in the meadow the cow-bells tinkle,
And small brooks crinkle oer stock and stone;
When heavy and hollow the robins whistle
And shadows are deep in the heat of noon;
When the air is white with the down o the thistle,
And the sky is red with the harvest moon;
O, then be chary, young Robert and Mary,
No time let slip, not a moment wait!
If the fddle would play it must stop its tuning;
And they who would wed must be done with their mooning;
So let the churn rattle, see well to the cattle,
And pile the wood by the barn-yard gate!

Thursday:
Time for Tips and Treasures
During the season of autumn, all kinds of creatures are busily gathering and storing
treasures for the coming winter.
But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and
where thieves do not break in and steal.

Fun Family Ideas
1. Take some time this week to work on a jigsaw puzzle together as a family if your
children are old enough. Find jigsaw puzzles that depict autumn and harvest time,
and have some fun as you make memories.
2. Crafts are fun to include in any unit study. Make autumn-themed bookmarks from
construction paper include harvest themes, leaves, apples, etc.
3. Make a fun autumn tablecloth from a clean, white, fat, twin bed sheet. Using fabric
paints and permanent markers, let the children decorate the sheet with some of the
things that they have learned while working on this unit study. Make SURE to put
plastic or some protective surface under the sheet as they work on it so the colors
dont come through on the table. This tablecloth can be used over the years as the
children grow up a useful and fun reminder of the learning adventure.
4. One of the treasured things you can do for your children as you work on this study
is make them autumn-themed pillowcases. Find some fun, autumn fabric, wash it,
and then cut it out to the dimensions for their bed pillows. This is very simple to do,
and pillowcases only require a few simple, straight seems. Here is a Web site that
ofers instructions: Kids Pillowcases.
5. Cooking together as a family can bring some very special interaction as well as
forming lasting memories for the whole clan. If youve got some special apple
recipes, now is the time to get them out and gather the family for a cooking
session. Here are a few recipe links for you to consider, as well as the last lapbook
element for your learning adventure.
