Platypus Potholder

This cute little egg-laying mammal will protect your hands when handling hot dishes.

You will need
Schachenmayr Cotton Time yarn (or any worsted weight cotton)
- I used about 50 grams of Color A, about 15 grams of Color B, and small amounts of black and white.
4 mm crochet hook
needle

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Body
Color A
For each body round replace the first dc with ch 3.
Round 1: 12 dc in magic ring, join with sl st. (12)
Round 2: 2 dc in each st, join with sl st. (24)
Round 3: [1 dc, 2 dc in next st] x 12, join with sl st. (36)
Round 4: [2 dc, 2 dc in next st] x 12, join with sl st. (48)
Round 5: [3 dc, 2 dc in next st] x 12, join with sl st. (60)
Round 6: [4 dc, 2 dc in next st] x 12, join with sl st. (72)
Round 7: [5 dc, 2 dc in next st] x 12, join with sl st. (84)
Do not fasten off. You will continue the tail from here.

Tail
Row 1: Ch 1, sc in the same st and next 10 sts, ch 1, turn (11)
Row 2: 11 sc, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 3: 2 sc in first st, 9 sc, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (13)
Rows 4-6: 13 sc, ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 7: 2 sc in first st, 11 sc, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (15)
Rows 8-9: 15 sc, ch 1, turn. (15)
Row 10: sc2tog, 11 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 11: sc2tog, 9 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 12: sc2tog, 7 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (9)
Row 13: sc2tog, 5 sc, sc2tog. (7)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Bill
Color B
Right side facing, join yarn with sl st to 32nd stitch from tail. There shoud be 31 free stitches
between tail and bill.

Row 1: 1 sc in same st as joining sl st, sc in next 10 sts, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 2: 11 sc, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 3: 2 sc in first st, 9 sc, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (13)
Rows 4-8: 13 sc, ch 1, turn. (13)
Row 9: sc2tog, 9 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (11)
Row 10: sc2tog, 7 sc, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (9)
Row 11: sc2tog, 5 sc, sc2tog. (7)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Make another piece with body, tail and bill.

Joining the pieces

Place front and back pieces together, wrong sides facing. Join color A with sl st to tail as shown in
picture. Working through both pieces sc around the potholder. Switch to color B for the bill part.
Join to 1st sc with sl st, sl st in next sc, make a hanging loop by chaining 6, skip 4 sc, sl st in next 2 sc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Feet
Color B
I positioned the feet so that there is 8 stitches between the bill and front foot, and 8 stitches
between two feet. (Adjust the positioning if needed.)
Row 1: Front side of the potholder up, join yarn to body with sl st. 1 sc in the same st as joining and
next 4 sts, ch 1, turn. (5)
Row 2: 5 sc, ch 1, turn. (5)
Row 3: 2 sc in first st, 3 sc, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (7)
Row 4: 2 sc in first st, 5 sc, 2 sc in last st, ch 1, turn. (9)
Row 5: 1 sc, 2 dc in next st, 2 sc, 3 dc in next st, 2 sc, 2 dc in next st, 1 sc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Eyes (make 2)
With white yarn
Round 1: 6 sc in magic ring. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12)
Round 3: [1 sc, 2 sc in next st] x6. (18)
Sl st in next 2 sts. Fasten off. Leave long enough yarn for sewing the eye to the body.
Make the pupil with black yarn: 6 sc in magic ring, join with sl st. (6) Fasten off.
Sew pupil to the white part of eye. Sew the eyes to the body.

You can also make the eye as one piece. Work round 1 with black and rounds 2-3 with white. Join all
rounds with sl st.
