I Properties
(Distributive)

The Distributive Property is when you split

up a two-digit number into two numbers
and then you multiply both numbers by the
coefcient and then add the sums to get
the answer. Example: 5(89) 9(11) 8(45)

1 Properties
(Associative)

The Associative Property is when there are

two equations, and they both equal each
other. The order does not matter and can
be varied. However, the numbers have to be
the same. Ex. (2+7)+5=(5+7)+2. (1x3)x2 =
(2x3)x1.

I Properties
(Commutative)

The Commutative Property states that

changing the order of addends does not
change the sum. It can be reversed, and still
be the same answer. Ex. a+b=b+a.

II Expression

4(7x-3) + 2x

1: Use the Distributive Property for 4(7x-3)

28x-12+2x

2. Add 2x+28x. 30x - 12

3. Make sure that there is nothing else to

do. Answer: 30x - 12.

III Equation

7x - 10 - 9x = -13

1. Find the variables and subtract them.

7x-9x= -2x -10 = -13

2. Add the constants, (whole numbers) 10 +

-13= -3 -2x=-3

3. Find the solution. x=1.5

IV Equation

5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6

1. Find the LCM (Lowest common multiple)

of the numbers. (6)

2. Multiply the top number by however much

the denominator needs to be multiplied to be
(6) 5x + 2x - 3 = 1 1

3. Simplify. 7x - 3 = 11, 11+3 = 14 Answer:

x=2

V Inequality

2 <_ x/-5

1. Multiply -5 by 2. -10 <_ x

2. Flip the sign. -10 >_ x

3. Graph. o= open circle (x......... o-10)

Detail: Since x and -5 are dividing, you

multiply -5 and 2, and ip the sign because
you are multiplying a negative number.

VI Inequality

-4x + 4 _> -8

1. Subtract -8 - 4 because 4 is positive. -4x

_> -12

2. Find the solution. x_>3

3. Graph. @=closed circle 3@................x

VII Open Circle &
Closed Circle

Open Circle: The number below it can

NOT be the variable number no matter
what. < >

Closed Circle. The number below CAN be

the variable number. <_ >_

Good way to remember. Line below

inequality sign = closed circle.

VIII Word Problems

Chris wants to buy a bike that costs $160. If he

saves $12 each week, what is the fewest number of
weeks he must save in order to buy the bike?

$12x >_ $160. 12/160 = 13.3 Repeating 13 x 12

= 156 No bike. 14 weeks = 168 Enough for bike

14 Weeks

VIII Word Problems

Mark worked on his homework 1/3 the

amount of time that his brother did. Mark
worked 25 min. How much time did his
brother work on his homework?

1/3x > 25 min 25 x 3 = 75min x = 75

VIII Word Problems

One third of a number, decreased by 36, is

at most 22.

1/3x - 36 <_ 22 - 36 = -14.

1/3x <_ -14 x 3 = -42

x<_ -42
