Title: Peer Educator (3 Volunteers required)
Background Information: The Voluntary School Club (VSC) Project is a new initiative through the Volunteerism Support Platform, in collaboration with Peace Corps and Ministry of Education, that gives students a framework to evaluate their current skills, set goals for the future, and think about the skills, knowledge and experiences that will set the groundwork for a fruitful education (formal and informal), career and meaningfully participate in nation-building. The training ad experiences will cover volunteerism, participatory development and procedures in service learning. Through the initial Voluntary School Club (VSC) Project, 3000 secondary school students and 30 teachers from 10 (total) schools in Georgetown, East Coast Demerara and East Bank Demerara will benefit from the opportunity to participate in Service Learning activities through combining service activities with structured opportunities that link the tasks with self-reflection; self-discovery, and the acquisition and comprehension of values, skills and content knowledge.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Volunteer will be expected to attend a 2 day training workshop (lunch and refreshments provided), and will be tasked with: facilitating sessions with youth participants; setting work-plan with students to assist them in the setting-up and managing school clubs providing guidance to youth as they set up clubs, design and plan their projects assisting students in the planning of their service activities assist students to execute their projects promoting the Youth Champion Training & the Training for Teachers and Support assisting students to network with other schools and organisations as they plan and execute their projects liaise with Youth officers of the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport to work with the students and teachers liaise with the VSP and schools to report on school project and students involvement evaluate the impact of the Voluntary School Club (VSC) Project Volunteers will be trained to facilitate sessions focused on youth engagement; provided with manuals; stationery and other resources needed to execute their role effectively.
Mandatory activities: Complete a minimum of 16 visits to each school at the end of the volunteers 4 months placement. Each Volunteer will work with 4 schools Each Volunteer is expected to visit each school once per week (schedule to be worked out with student body Network building with Schools and Community Based Organisations Report submission (on a fortnightly basis)- written, pictures and/or interest stories
Qualifications or Experience Desired Flexible schedule Reliable and open-minded. Willing to learn new skills about volunteerism, group facilitations, community service education, and enthusiastic to pass along those skills to high school students. Completed secondary school, preferably with at least 2-3 years of post-secondary education, or volunteer or work experience. Teaching experience not required, but must be comfortable speaking in front of groups. Time Commitment required: 4 months
Location: Schools are located in central Georgetown, East Coast Demerara and East Bank Demerara. Volunteer will work with Private and Public Schools
Supervision: Pere DeRoy, Volunteerism Support Platform- Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport Benefits: Volunteers will receive a stipend of $25,000.00 All expenses materials for training sessions will be covered by the project Volunteers will be provided with a Tshirt so as to identify with the Project Volunteers will be provided with Phone cards to aid with communicating with MCYS and the Schools.
