Gideon Arthurs has been General Manager at Tarragon Theatre
for two years. His interest in the arts started in acting, and he at-
tended the performing arts high school Earl Haig in North York. It
wasnt until high school that Gideon discovered producing. As a
theatre producer, Gideon is in charge of all the business aspects
of a production. This includes dealing with fnances, writing funding
proposals, overseeing marketing, managing the venue, and hiring
and leading staff.
A typical day for Gideon involves all of these things. He describes
part of his job as mechanical, because he deals with lots of bud-
gets and fgures. Gideons job can also be challenging. Often, in
the not-for-proft arts sector, ambitions are greater than resources,
people, time, or money. But when Gideon overcomes these chal-
lenges, he fnds being a producer extremely rewarding.
Gideon loves his job because he still gets to be involved in the
artistic process its up to him to make sure the resources match
the great things that are planned by the actors and artistic team.
Its also his responsibility to get Torontos audiences buzzing about
the work that Tarragon does and encourage them to come out to
the theatre.
Gideon says that his job is all about instinct, energy, and imagina-
tion. His advice for anyone who wants to work in the arts is to just
do it. Dont doubt yourself. Go for it!

**You may notice that
some job titles appear
in more than one sec-

the arts, your job may
involve wearing many
different hats, and will
deal with many tasks

Jade has been the Outreach Director of Manifesto for three years.
Jade is also an independent artist, set designer, creative appren-
tice and a business entrepreneur. Her interest grew into commu-
nity arts while she was working at Free the Children charity. She is
interested in the intersection of public space, community, and art.
An Outreach Offcer is someone who interacts with community,
coordinate with community partners, hire and train volunteers and
interns, and engage with youth arts group.

A typical day in Jades job involves all of these things. As the Out-
reach Director, she is the face of the organization. She describes
her job as very inspirational, because the work environment
is always changing and she meets different people all the time.
However, Jade loves her job because it is people based. She loves
to get to know about community and understanding the amazing
talents that they have.

Her job is also very challenging. It is diffcult to stay focused on
one thing because she sees so many ideas and potentials coming
out from the community.

Jade says that her job is all about communication, connectivity,
and inspiration. Her advice for anyone who wants to work in the
arts is to get to know your community, get involved, know what is
going on, and work on your communication skills in all different
platform.
