HW#5

Problem#1

Part (a)

Max_Stress(xx)VsP-pass
Fringe Plot of Stress(xx)
Stress concentration factor of Max_stress(xx) due to Circular hole
After Mesh Control

Max_Stress(xx)VsP-pass
Fringe Plot of Stress(xx)
Stress concentration factor of Max_stress(xx) due to Circular hole
Part (b)

Max_Stress(xx)VsP-pass
Fringe Plot of Stress(xx)
Stress concentration factor of Max_stress(xx) due to Circular hole
After Mesh Control

Max_Stress(xx)VsP-pass
Fringe Plot of Stress(xx)
Stress concentration factor of Max_stress(xx) due to Circular hole
After Mesh Control taking 10 nodes

Max_Stress(xx)VsP-pass
Fringe Plot of Stress(xx)
Stress concentration factor of Max_stress(xx) due to Circular hole

Comment over calculation time elapsed:

In case of 3D mode, Total Elapsed Time (seconds): 33.52 where as in case of 2D

model, Total Elapsed Time (seconds): 0.62 and after mesh control in 2D model,
Total Elapsed Time (seconds): 7.62

So it takes a much more time in doing analysis of the 3D model in comparison of 2D

model.

Comparing the result obtains from two cases:

For 3D Model: For 2D Model:

max_stress_xx: 1.645885e+03 0.3% max_stress_vm:
1.627030e+03 0.1%
max_stress_vm: 1.628053e+03 0.2% max_stress_xx:
1.628333e+03 0.1%
The result obtain are close to each other. Also, there are benefits of using the 2D
model in analysis
as it takes much less time in running the analysis. 2D model analysis uses less
number of total equations (1101) compared to 3D model analysis (23160).

Problem#3

Convergence Plot of Max_stress(xx) Vs P –pass

Fringe Plot of Max_stress(xx)

How to reduce the Max stresses in the model?

The maximum stresses are found in the area near by the edges of the flat plate of
0.1 m.
As shown in above fringe plot, it goes to red at the notches of the two surface
meeting.
Instead of sharp curve, if smooth curve is provided by filling, near by the edges than
we can reduce the stresses acting over that area.
Problem#2

Max_Stress(xx)VsP-pass
Fringe Plot of Stress(xx)
Stress concentration factor of Max_stress(xx) due to Elliptical hole
Sensitivity study

How changing the value of “b” will affect stress concentration factor?

By changing the value of the “b” from 0.1” to 1.0”, stress concentration factor will
decrease.
At b=0.1”, stress concentration will be maximum as the pressure applied on plate in
the normal direction and at b=1.0”, the stress concentration factor will be
minimum.

At b=0.5”, the Max stress is around 1600 and is same with problem 1 (2D case).
