Applying Basic Numeracy and Calculation Skills
Mathematics has a rich and fascinating history. What we know as mathematics
today is the culmination of thousands of years of toil and progress, with
contributions made by both ancient and modern civilizations. As one looks back at
the history of humanity, a striking observation can be made about the history of
mathematics: our ancestors developed mathematics when faced with a real world
problem that was either too complicated to solve mentally or impossible to solve
with the most current knowledge and understandings. You see, mathematics is real,
meaningful, and even revolutionary.
In this section of the course of study, you will study numbers, counting and
arithmetic, starting with whole numbers. By the end of this section, you will be
working effortlessly with more sophisticated numbers, like fractions, decimals,
integers, and eventually rational numbers. Remember, numbers were created by
our ancestors to help us find solutions to everyday problems. In the spirit of our
ancestors, continue to search for real world applications of numbers and arithmetic.
Competencies covered by this subject
116.2.1 - Applying Basic Numeracy and Calculation Skills
The student utilizes the operations, processes, and procedures of basic numeracy
and calculation skills to solve quantitative problems in arithmetic and basic algebra.
Whole Numbers
Without a basic understanding of the counting numbers, people would be lost in our
number-driven world. We all use counting numbers every day. Counting numbers

allow us to determine how many people are coming to dinner and how many hours
are in a day. Whole numbers, which are simply counting numbers and 0, relate to
issues such as how many apartment complexes are in a building, the number of
available parking spaces, or the cartons of milk you need to buy In this unit you will
study additional uses of whole numbers, focusing on real world applications of
whole numbers, whole number arithmetic, and factorizations of whole numbers.

Decimals
You use decimals every day in the handling of money. In the United States, coins
are worth less than a dollar. In fact, each coin we use represents a special fraction,
or part, of a dollar. For example, dimes are worth one tenth of a dollar and pennies
are worth one one-hundredth of a dollar. Thankfully, we use decimals rather than
fractions to represent the worth of coins. We do this because decimal arithmetic is
rather simplistic in comparison with fraction arithmetic. In this unit you will study
additional uses of decimals, focusing on real world applications of decimals, decimal
arithmetic, and estimation.

Introduction to Algebra and Real Numbers
Who likes hearing that their checking account is overdrawn? No one! Why is that
exactly? It represents a scenario where we have spent more money than we have
available in our account. In fact, we owe the bank at least the amount that we spent
beyond our available funds. Signed numbers, like -10 and -76.58, are used to
denote debt and describe an overdraft amount. Real numbers, which include signed
numbers, can be used to describe positive balances and negative balances. In this
unit you will study additional uses of real numbers, focusing on real world
applications of real numbers, real number arithmetic, and special properties of real
numbers.

Ratios, Proportions, and Percents
Have you ever attempted to find the best bargain whil shopping for food or
gasoline? when prices are given to us as unit rates, like $1.39 per pound and $3.89
per gallon, it is relatively easy to figure out which deal is the best. Sometimes we
are not as fortunate and prices are given as general rates, like $5.45 for 12-ounces
or $6.35 for 14-ounce. What do we do now? Use tatios and proportions to scale
down! That is, use ratios and proportions to figure out how much you are being
charged for each ounce and then compare these values to find the best deal. In this
unit you will learn how to set up ratios, proportions, and percents to solve a wide
variety of real world, everyday problems, including the bargain shopping problems.

Applying Basic Algebra Skills
Contrary to popular belief, algebra is an effective and useful problem solving
strategy. Much like numbers, counting, and arithmetic, algebra was invented as a
means to solve difficult problems. Looking at algebra for the first time can be a bit
like looking at alphabet soup; letters and numbers appear to be randomly placed on
the page. Behind it all, however, is a real world story involving real people with a
real problem to solve. Once again, mathematics is real, meaningful, and even
revolutionary.
In this section of the course of study, you will learn the fundamentals of algebra and
graphing. By the end of this section, you will be working effortlessly with algebra

framework for solving algebra problems visually. From this point forward, algebra
became a landscape of lines and curves. The visually adept could now solve
complex algebra problems using the naked eye rather than messy equations.

116.2.3 - Basic Geometric Principles
The student utilizes the operations, processes, and procedures of basic geometry
and measurement to solve problems in mathematics.
Geometry (Part I)
Practical problems in geometry must have been tackled in building projects long
before they were actually recorded in written form. The Babylonians and Egyptians
became quite adept at working with the geometry of two-dimensional shapes (e.g.,
triangles, rectangles, circles) and three-dimensional objects (e.g., cubes, pyramids,
spheres). Documents from around 3100 BC reveal that these two civilizations
already had some mathematical rules for measuring storage containers, surveying
land and planning buildings.
In this unit, you, too, will learn how to measure containers and analyze building
dimensions by applying the concepts of perimeter, area, and volume to real world
objects.

Geometry (Part II)
In ancient Greece, Helen of Troy was iconic. Indeed, she was the dream girl of
Athens, celebrated not for her kindness or her intellect, but for her physical
perfection. But why did Greek men find Helen so intoxicating? In an attempt to
answer this question, the philosophers of the day devoted a great deal of time to
this question. Plato suggested that the ratio of the length of the face to its width
could be used to measure human beauty, with the most preferred proportion called
the golden ratio. Platos golden ratio has not held up to the rigors of modern
research. Modern psychological and biological research indicates that left-right
facial symmetry is a better indicator of beauty.
In this unit, you will learn about transformational geometry, a branch of geometry
interested in reflective symmetry among other things.

Applying Basic Data Interpretation and
Probability
The field of statistics has been evolving for a very long time. In todays
technologically advanced world, we are barraged with data and information from
sources trying to convince us to buy something or simply persuade us to agree with
their point of view. When a new product is recommended by 4 out of 5 doctors, do
we question that validity of the claim? For instance, it would be useful to know if the
doctors were paid for their endorsement. Statistics can have a powerful influence on
our feelings, our opinions, and our decisions. Getting a handle on this widely used
tool is a good thing for all of us.

In this section of the course of study, you will study the fundamentals of data,
statistical graphs, and probability. By the end of this section, you will be working
effortlessly with statistical data and probability experiments. Remember, we gather
data to understand the world around us. In the spirit of our ancestors, continue to
search for real world meaning as you study statistics and probability.

representations and solves basic probability problems.
Data and Statistics
Without a basic understanding of the statistics, people would be lost in our
data-driven world. It is important to study and understand the fundamentals of
statistics because you will encounter statistics in your everyday life. You see
election results and comparisons of financial data. If you are a baseball fan,
statistics are used to determine hitting and pitching percentages.
In this unit, you will study the fundamentals of statistics, including the relationship
between real world data and statistical graphs as well as the statistical calculations
commonly used to describe real world data.

Counting and Probability
How often do you use words like "likely" and "unlikely," or "certainly" and "never?
This is the language of probability. The study of probability began with the French
studying games of chance. Today, probability, just as statistics, plays a critical role
in society. Probability is used in evaluating experimental data of all sorts, in quality
control in manufacturing, in studying the behavior of atoms and particles, and in
countless other ways.
In this unit, you will study the fundamentals of probability, including the application
