2. Criteria A is worth 5 points A: Knowledge and Understanding of Extract or
Work(s) How well does the candidate know and understand the content of the
extract or work(s)? How well does the candidate situate the extract or work(s)
within the context of the larger work from which it has been taken or the body
of works to which it belongs, where relevant?
3. Criteria B is worth 10 points B: Interpretation and Personal Response How
valid is the candidates interpretation of the extract or work(s)? How well has
the candidate identified and analysed the effects of literary features in the
extract or work(s), such as diction, imagery, tone, structure, style and
technique? To what extent does the candidates response show critical
thinking and originality? How precise and relevant are the candidates
references to the extract or work(s)?
4. Criteria C is worth 10 points C: Presentation How structured is the
candidates response? How effective and convincing is the candidates
presentation? How appropriately does the candidate integrate supporting
references to the extract or work(s)?
5. Criteria D is worth 5 marks D: Use of Language How accurate, clear and
precise is the language used by the candidate? How appropriate is the
candidates choice of register and style for the occasion? (Register refers, in
this context, to the candidates sensitivity to elements such as the vocabulary,
tone, sentence structure and idiom appropriate to the task.) Literary terms are
taken in the widest possible sense, for example, novel, play, poem, persona,
character, narrator.
6. Analysis of the criteria Obviously criteria B and C are the most important.
Why? They are worth 10 points each. Twice as much as A and D.
7. Criteria A How well did you situate the extract or works? You need to
discuss context of the whole whether it is a part of a novel or play or a whole
poem You need a detailed analysis of or creative Presentation analysing an
extract or text.
8. Criteria B This is all about analysing Figurative language Generic devices
Critical awareness and response to the effects of literary features and generic
devices Quotations and precise references
9. Criteria C This is about structure and presentation skills Effective and
focused structure Effective and persuasive manner which is coherent and
integrates examples or references into your presentation (use quotes and
analyse them as you go)
10. Criteria D It aint what you say its the way what you say it How you speak,
effective tone and gestures Grammar and vocabulary Using literary terms
confidently and appropriately
11. Conclusion In order to maximise your marks do or avoid doing the following
things: Being vague, repeating yourself No eye contact Reading without
engaging with your audience Speaking in a monotone Retelling the story, you
must analyse
