COMPETENCY STRUCTURE AND RATINGS

Thirty three (33) technical competencies applicable to the geoscience function are described over the following
pages.

The structure of each competency is as follows:

Description.................................a statement summarising the knowledge and skills required by the
competency; and
Performance standards..............specific statements providing detailed information about the knowledge and
skills that must be demonstrated


There are five levels of proficiency for each competency, as detailed below:

Level (-1)..........Not Applicable

Level 1..............Some knowledge about skills, principles and usage
Has basic familiarity with the skill and is able to provide technical support to competent users. This level requires
an understanding of data requirements at a sufficient level to provide the essential elements required for
implementation of the skill.

Level 2..............Sufficient working knowledge and level of skill to be able to work alone
Is developing a working knowledge of the skill and its associated theory and is undertaking routine tasks in the
skill without direct supervision Analyses are considered complete upon satisfactory review by an immediate
supervisor, technical advisor or competent team leader.

Level 3..............Good working knowledge or level of skill to support self and others
Possesses a solid working knowledge of the skill and its associated theory and can undertake complex skill
related work without supervision. .Is directly accountable for work undertaken utilising the skill and is capable of
independently defending its outcome in a range of differing situations.

Level 4..............High level of knowledge, highly proficient at applying skill and at coaching others
Understands the skill and its associated theory sufficiently to undertake and enhance ongoing complex analysis
techniques. Serves as a source of technical advice across a Resource or Asset team.

Level 5..............Recognised expert in knowledge and application of skill. May include contribution
to development of body of knowledge
Understands the skill, its application and its associated theory sufficiently to be recognised and relied upon by the
company and the professional community for technical advice. Facilitates technical development of the skill
across the Company.


1. STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Determine basin structural geology and reservoir distribution by assessing the nature, timing and degree of fault movement
and folding (timing of hydrocarbon trap formation and fault/fold controls on depositional patterns), consulting and analysing
all available geological data and applying knowledge of structural styles, geometries, genetic models and structural histories.

2. PETROLEUM SYSTEMS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Examine all aspects of a sedimentary basin, including the timing of oil and gas generation and migration (with respect to
reservoir and trap formation) and, drawing multi disciplinary data and concepts together, explain the genetic relationships
between source rock and related oil and gas, and those elements and processes required to make and preserve an oil and/or
gas accumulation

3. SEDIMENTOLOGY - CLASTICS (Depositional Environments)

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Classify and describe sedimentary (clastic) rocks and explain processes responsible for their formation - including the origin,
transportation and deposition of rock forming materials, their diagenesis and lithification

4. SEDIMENTOLOGY - NON-CLASTICS (Depositional Environments)

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Classify and describe sedimentary (non-clastic) rocks and explain processes responsible for their formation - including the
origin, transportation and deposition of rock forming materials, their diagenesis and lithification

5. STRATIGRAPHY

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Identify depositional environments and potential reservoir, source rock, seal units and hydrocarbon trapping mechanisms by
analysing the composition, formation, sequence and correlation of stratified rocks using appropriate tools

6. BIOSTRATIGRAPHY

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Use appropriate microfossil groups to create an effective stratigraphic framework and integrate data to analyse and predict

trends and controls in relation to sediment dispersal and depositional style

7. PETROLEUM GEOCHEMI STRY

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Apply geochemical principles to the study of the origin, migration and alteration of petroleum in order to make quantitative
predictions of the type and volumes of hydrocarbons generated and expelled, their distribution within a basin and the timing
of migration with respect to trap formation.



8. PROSPECT GENERATION

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Use available subsurface data, structural mapping, well log correlations and other procedures to systematically recognise and
document structural and stratigraphic leads that have the potential to contain commercial volumes of hydrocarbons; identify
and address key associated risks and mature those leads with merit to drillable status

9. PLAY ANALYSIS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Systematically evaluate data and concepts concerning defined plays

to develop sets of consistent hypotheses on the
volumes of additional reserves expected to be added within the play.

Sets of known or postulated hydrocarbon accumulations sharing similar temporal, geologic and geographic properties such as hydrocarbon
type, trap mechanisms, source rock/s and migration fairways

10. RISK ASSESSMENT

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Identify and assess geological and geophysical uncertainties and risks that relate to prospect and play commerciality to
determine resource value and potential, identifying implications for future exploration and risk assessment

11. OUTCROP MAPPING

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Measure, describe and interpret textures, structural forms and stratigraphic successions in the field, interpret rock
associations in terms of tectonic settings, reconstruct environments of sedimentation, evaluate rock deformation history and
mechanisms and relative timing of geological events, and prepare geologic reports.

12. COAL SEAM GAS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required to be able to:

Be knowledgeable of the geology and mechanics of coal seam gas reservoirs in order to successfully explore for, identify,
assess and develop coal seam gas prospects.


13. COAL QUALITY AND PROPERTIES

DESCRIPTION:

This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Analyse, and QC coal properties for integration into volumetric estimates. To monitor laboratory results and to design
challenge analytical procedures.


14. GEOLOGY OF COAL

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Develop processes that effect predictive models relating to coal seam distribution, quality variations, and thickness.

15. 2D & 3D INTERPRETATI ON AND MAPPING

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Use appropriate techniques and tools (including seismic modelling, where appropriate) to develop time structure and
isochron maps, integrating all relevant surface and sub-surface geological and petrophysical information; apply appropriate
seismic velocities to construct realistic depth structure and isopach maps.

16. QUANTITATIVE GEOPHYSICS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Analyse the first order parametric influences on seismic wave propagation (which result from various petrophysical
signatures), and use seismic data in a quantitative manner to determine variations in shale volume, porosity or fluid content
and saturation, or variations in fracture density or intensity

17. SEISMIC STRATIGRAPHY

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Recognise, identify and map sedimentary and stratigraphic features and potential stratigraphic trapping mechanisms by

data

18. NON SEISMIC GEOPHYSICS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Use potential fields and satellite data to support exploration and development activities. Potential fields data includes gravity,
airborne magnetics, direct-current electrical resistivity, electromagnetics (especially including CSEM), and magnetotellurics.
Satellite data includes LANDSAT images, radiometric images, and synthetic aperture radar.


19. ONSHORE SEISMI C ACQUISITION

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Acquire seismic data in an optimum manner, applying comprehensive knowledge of seismic operations including survey
design, technical specification, contract supervision, dealing with third party stakeholders, health safety and environment
issues, cost control and auditing.

20. OFFSHORE SEISMIC ACQUISITI ON

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Acquire seismic data in an optimum manner, applying comprehensive knowledge of seismic operations including survey
design, technical specification, contract supervision, dealing with third party stakeholders, health safety and environment
issues, cost control and auditing.

21. SEISMIC PROCESSING

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Maximise information extracted from seismic data sets and ensure finished products meet interpretation objectives by
identifying and comprehending interpreter objectives and processing sequence/parameterisation

22. SURVEY/ SPATIAL DATA BASE

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Manage and use spatial data and conduct surveys, applying knowledge of appropriate procedures

23. PETROPHYSI CS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Analyse physical measurements of rock properties to determine reservoir quality, pore volume and fluid distribution using
open hole log analysis, core analysis, (cuttings) sample analysis

24. ROCK TYPING

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Use microscopy to analyse drill cuttings for various rock properties including porosity and permeability

25. ROUTINE & SPECIAL CORE ANALYSIS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Analyse physical measurements of rock properties to determine reservoir quality, pore volume and fluid distribution using
laboratory measurements and computer applications; use this data in PE field development studies

26. PETROLOGY

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Analyse rock using polarisation/fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction, x-ray
fluorescence, and other imaging techniques to tie with and normalise wireline logs, identify reservoir and mineral
constituents, source rock and seal properties, provenance and depositional environments

27. WELLSITE OPERATIONS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Provide expert advice

that ensures implementation of programs in an optimal manner, applying comprehensive knowledge of
drilling, coring, cased and open hole logging, testing and well completion and abandonment processes, and of new and
leading edge technology pertaining to these processes
28. RESERVOI R CHARACTERISATION & MODELLING

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Use reservoir characterisation techniques to develop integrated 3D static reservoir representations; use these models to
provide volumetric range estimates, input to reservoir simulation, well targeting & planning and uncertainty & risk analysis

29. VOLUMETRI CS & RESERVES ESTI MATION

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Assess the range of hydrocarbon volumes potentially recoverable from an individual reservoir, field or field complex using
techniques/methods involving the analysis of structure, stratigraphy, reservoir properties, fluid properties and recovery
mechanisms to determine both in place and recoverable reserves.

30. HYDRODYNAMI CS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Identify and explain pressure regimes within sedimentary basins, in particular with respect to the movement of oil, gas and
water through sediments of variable reservoir quality and differing burial histories.
31. FIELD APPRAISAL AND DEVELOPMENT PLANNI NG

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Analyse data relating to field developments, the development of alternative development scenarios and the production of a
development plan, securing the support/approval of senior management and J V partners at all stages
32. RESERVOI R MANAGEMENT

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Acquire and analyse information pertinent to the management of a producing reservoir, with a view to maximising its value

33. GEOMECHANI CS

DESCRIPTION:
This competency describes the knowledge and skills required for employees to be able to:
Determine the effective stress/strain behaviour and failure mechanics of rocks and apply rock mechanics concepts to
generate economic benefits in all phases of reservoir development.
