ynl (lunar date) - Takes place on
the eighth day of the 12th lunar month.
qyun (origin) - Originated as a
celebration of the harvest. Neighbors
would gather together for grand ceremonies of thanksgiving
and feast on porridge made from the crops. It developed
into a time to commemorate ancestors. It changed when
Buddhism came to China.

During this festival Laba
rice porridge is eaten to
honor peoples ancestors
and the sacrifices and
sufferings of Buddha.
Aside from eating rice
porridge people also pray
for a peaceful and healthy
coming year. It is also
associated with garlic
making.

qyun gsh/Chunshu (story of origin/legends) -
After Buddhism came to China, it
blended with the existing traditional
harvest celebration. Legend became
that Sakyamuni, the son of a king
from India left his sheltered life in his
castle to find enlightenment. He
nearly starved to death if not for a
women who fed him rice porridge.
He continued his quest and soon
became the Buddha on the eighth
day of 12th lunar month .

Over time, evolved
from and agricultural harvest
celebration, to a religious
celebration. Monks may serve
porridge to their community to
celebrate Buddha.It has
remained widely celebrated,
though it is practiced more in
some regions than in others.
On , people still begin to prepare their porridge. As
they have for hundreds of years, they cook rice, grains,
sugar, dried fruit, seeds, nuts, raisins, beans, and
seasoning to make the porridge, with the exact recipe
varying by region.

China has many traditional holidays, and Spring Festival is
the most important. An extended celebration of the Lunar
New Year that lasts for many weeks, shows the start
of Spring Festival. The arrival of the last month of the lunar
year brings holiday spirit. (Like our Thanksgiving marks the
start of the holiday season).
It has traditionally been
celebrated by all different
classes in society, from royal
officials to common people,
and friends,families, and
neighbors all around the
country gather together to
celebrate.
