Section 1: Introduction
Statement of Purpose My objective is a non-profit organization and limited access animal shelter for dogs only, located in the town of Woodbury, Vermont that will be sheltering, rehabilitating, and finding them a forever home. This being a limited access shelter is essential. As a limited access shelter it means no dog in our care will be euthanized to create room for another. This shelter will be run out of my own home on 21 acres of open and wooded land. From a business perspective, a non-profit organization is a business that offers services and products, but does not strive to make a profit. As a business in our free-enterprise economy, which is an economic system in which individuals own and operate a majority of businesses, it will run efficiently and could be trusted upon that the business will remain a going-concern. Any profit, the difference between the cost to make and sell products/services and what a customer would pay for it, made from this shelter and its products will solely be put back into the shelter and the dogs that currently reside here. This plan is not only an operational guide for my business, but also for financing. This animal shelter will need funding to obtain the shelter materials and supplies to fix the building to what is needed and most accommodating for the animals. Resources of all kinds will be used in the operation of this shelter, such as reaching out to the community, grants and fundraising. Financing will be a small amount due to the anticipated amount of capital and products we will receive from donations, grants and fundraising.
Executive Summary Valley Lake Animal Shelter is a non-profit organization and a limited access shelter for dogs. This shelter is solely operated by me. The shelter will be located on 21 acres of open and wooded land where I reside. Through this business plan I am looking to get financing and outline my business for startup. Business Goals Short Term Goals: Have 300 or more adoptions in the first year. Fundraise or receive grants of at least $2500 each month. Gain at least 3 reliable volunteers by June 2014. Have a successful dog-a-thon walk with over $4000 in donations and money fundraised in June 2014. Long Term Goals: Complete over 2000 adoptions in the third year. Start a fostering program in the second year. Fundraise or receive grants of over $3000 each month starting the second year.
4
Build a strong foundational support in the community in order to meet fundraising/financial goals by 2017. Gain over 8 reliable volunteers by 2016.
Marketing As the shelter manager my main goal is to get every animal a forever home and to have a successful shelter. To achieve this, multiple advertising and promotional plans will be set in place. The shelter will attract a target market of people 21 and older who are looking for a dog companion. In Packaged Facts' February/March 2013 Pet Owner Survey the results showed that 67% of pet owners agree with shelter adoption over other forms of pet acquisition. The number of animals in shelters is swiftly increasing, but people are answering this with more adoptions. An animal shelter in this market will be successful, and have a wide ranging customer basis to grow off of.
Ownership and Personnel I'll be in charge of the management of the shelter. With my experience, in business through the Business Administration class at Green Mountain Tech, internships and employment at North Country Animal League and my associates degree in Vet Technician at Vermont Tech, I have the needed skills and knowledge to run my own shelter. Operation and success of this shelter will be my fulltime job. The only other employee I will have is the trainer I hired for dogs in need or customers. Volunteers will be vital as well to the shelter.
Financials In section 5 of this business plan I have placed the following financial statements:
Income Statement- My 1 st year projected sales are $83,731, total expenses are $69,699.27 which results in a net income of $13,071.23.
Cash Flow Analysis- I will be injecting $2,500 of my own capital into the business for startup. Anticipating I receive the requested loan amount of $5,030.71, and fundraise $2,500 as well, my cash position pre-startup is $2,424.07, when all the pre-startup expenses for the business are taken out.
Balance Sheet- The loan amount I have requested is $5,030.71. With an average interest rate of 7 percent, I was expecting to pay off my loan in 7 years at payments of $75.93.
Break Even Analysis- My break-even sales amount is $46,076.
3-5 Year Projections- I am projecting sales to increase by an average annual rate of 4 to 6 percent.

This business plan is set to not only be an operational guide, but for financing as well. Financing amount will be little due to anticipated amount of capital and products from fundraising and grants.
Business Concept Name: Valley Lake Animal Shelter
Type of Business& Business Structure: Non-Profit and limited access animal shelter for dogs, operated solely by me.
Product Line and/or Services: This shelter will be selling animal products, goods and services with tangible and intangible characteristics, such as ones needed for proper care including (but not limited to) bedding, leashes, collars, toys, crates, training and adoption.
Market: The shelter will target people of 21 years of age or older who are looking for a dog companion.
Location: Woodbury, Vermont on my property of 21 acres of open and wooded land. Part of the financing will be used towards supplies for the shelter dogs such as holding kennels and fenced in areas to keep the dogs active but safe.
Operation: The Valley Lake Animal Shelter will operate year round. Hours the shelter will be open to the public is Tuesday- Thursday: 12 to 4pm, Friday: 12 to 5pm, Saturday: 11 to 4pm and Sunday- Monday: Closed. The fiscal year for my business begins in October. Peak periods will be during the summer months, June and July. Business Goals and Objectives: Short Term Goals: Have 300 or more adoptions in the first year. Fundraise or receive grants of over $3000 each month starting the second year. Build a strong foundational support in the community in order to meet fundraising/financial goals by 2017. Gain over 8 reliable volunteers by 2016.
6
Mission Statement: Valley Lake Animal Shelters mission is to provide a shelter to homeless and abandoned animals, primarily dogs from high-kill shelters and owners who can no longer care for them. By working with reliable and dedicated volunteers, foster homes, local veterinarians, trainers, and boarding facilities, we will be able to rescue hundreds of animals every year, provide them a shelter with loving temporary care, and find them a perfectly matched forever home.
Section 2: Products/Services This shelter will be selling animal products, goods and services with tangible and intangible characteristics, such as ones needed for proper care including (but not limited to) bedding, leashes, collars, toys, crates, training and adoption. Some of the reliable animal products we will be selling, and using are Lupine dog collars and California Natural dog food.
Section 3: Marketing Market Analysis A great part about this business, in this market, is the slight inflation, a continuing rise in prices, so the cost of our products and services are never ridiculous, and can cater to the needs of people in Vermont that do not make as big of an income as others, but still need this resource. As people are becoming more aware of "puppy mills," they are becoming more and more concerned with purchasing dogs from breeders, thus resulting in more shelter adoptions. An animal shelter in this market will be successful, and have a wide ranging customer basis to grow off of. Customer Analysis My target market will be adults who are 21 or older, and looking to adopt an animal or an individual who owns an animal and is looking for some supplies such as collars, and toys etc. to benefit the shelter. However to adopt and be an actual customer they will have to match our expectations for personality, attitude, and social roles based on the animal they want to adopt. The sales method will be to advertise, and get the word out about our shelter to get people to visit. Also adoption events at pet stores such as Petsmart will take place to get people from other locations to have a chance to adopt as well. Everything about the customers will have to be taken into consideration when they are adopting from the shelter. Customers have to be adults of the age of 21 or older, and where they live, characteristics, marital and family status, sex, income, level, occupation, lifestyle etc. will have
7
to be thought of carefully when considering the animal they want to adopt to match the animal up with an acceptable adopter. This target market will represent the primary market. They will be the most important and vital to the adoptions of the animals and the well being of the shelter as well. Competitive Analysis The competition, rivalry among businesses for consumers dollars, for my animal shelter would be little due to location, and demand, which is the number of goods/services consumers are willing to buy. This shelter is not a monopoly, a market where only one business is selling a product in a given market, nor an oligopoly, a market where there are few businesses selling one product, since there are other animal shelters out there in different regions and towns. Being located in Woodbury, the nearest competitor is in Hardwick, and Montpelier. The Hardwick shelter is out of home and recently starting up; still trying to get a footing. The Central Vermont Humane Society in Montpelier has been running for a couple years, completely renovated, and steady with business. Greatest competitor would be the Montpelier shelter, and the least would most definitely be the Hardwick shelter. Some shelters in Vermont, not including the two mentioned above, in a reasonable distance from my Woodbury shelter are: North Country Animal League, Homeward Bound, Green Mountain Animal Defenders, and Almost Home Dog Rescue and Rehab. Demand is a big factor too, because due to the recent recession, a decline in employment, production and income, and depression, a condition in which unemployment is high, consumer spending is low and business output is sharply reduced, in past years people could not afford animals, leaving many animals a stray. To meet this demand thered be an indefinite supply, amount of products/ services this shelter is willing to sell, creating an equilibrium price, price of which amount of products that businesses are willing to supply equals amount of products consumers are willing to buy, creating a overall structured and balanced business. . With a high demand also economic contraction, a slowdown of the economy due to a decline in spending which business start to cut back on production and lay off workers, could hopefully be avoided so the shelter could still be supplied. Thus another shelter in a town with no such resource would be a great investment, and help to the Woodbury community and surrounding towns.

Marketing Strategies SMART Goal (S)pecific: This shelter will have completed over 300 adoptions in the first year. (M)easurable: The goal will be reached when 300 adoptions have been completed without falling through or the animal coming back. (A)chievable : This goal is very realistic, and will be achieved with advertising, and adoption events. (R)elevant: This goal is important to the shelter because it means less stray or homeless animals, more cared for animals, and a successful outlook on the shelter from the public. (T)imely: I can achieve this goal through the twelve months that follow from the opening of the shelter in October. Positioning, Packaging, and Pricing Strategies The image of my business is low key, and friendly. I want the focus to be all about the animals. The shelter will be located on my property with over 21 acres of land for use. When customers come they will be at ease, and know these animals are well taken care of. The only products I will have is apparel with our logo, to help promote the shelter, and dog supplies so when adoptions occur the adoptee has all the items at hand to equip them for their new companion. There wont be any packaging. All the products will be in a specific room hanging up or on a shelf ready for sale. Lastly, I wanted to choose reasonable prices for my products, so the markup is 40% of the original cost. Selling Strategies The shelters products will be sold directly there, and on the website through mailing. Some advertising will be used via the website, but little due to the main focus is the adoption of the animals, not the products. Also I will not be offering my products or services to other countries. My goal as a nonprofit shelter is to help out the surrounding community. I hope to build a community based clientele to support my business. Even though expanding my business to other nations may bring my animal shelter above others, I would like to be able to give locals availability to my shelter before other nations. Also by eliminating this option I dont have to deal with possible embargos and extra costs to export products, or to import animals here from other countries. Even though Northern American Federal Trade Agreement has made business a lot easier to do in different countries, I still would like to not have to worry, and keep my business simply local.
11
Promotional Strategies and Marketing Plan As the shelter manager my main goal is to get every animal a forever home and to have a successful shelter. To achieve this, multiple advertising and promotional plans will be set in place. Social media such as Facebook is the best plan of action to take with advertisement due to the fact its a free service. A print-ad, 30 second commercial, and a website I created will be used as well. Promotion will be set through mini fundraisers throughout the business year, adoption events and a huge dog-a-thon walk in June.

Section 4: Operations Codes of Ethics:
1. At all times to be honest, and fair to not only the public, but the animals. 2. Always be respectful to potential adopters, donors, sponsors, volunteers, and the animals. 3. Communication is vital to the daily operation of the shelter. For an example, if an issue arises please communicate it to me so I can address it. 4. Participation will be mandatory. Everyone is to help out one another, whether if it is your duty or not. 6. Attitude is everything. When a potential adopter comes in a smile should always be on your face, and they should feel welcomed by you. 7. Any animal that reside here, at any time, is to be treated with love. You are no better than them. 8. Time spent here is solely for working, and actions that benefit this shelter, and its residents.

The type of business/ownership that would best suit my company would be sole proprietorship with intent to file for a nonprofit 501(c)3. This is an American tax-exempt nonprofit organization. It would be the least costly and easiest way to get my business running. A partnership, an association of two or more people who carry on as co-workers of a business for profit, would not work because I want to be the sole owner, and be in full control. Lastly a corporation, a legal entity created by the state, whose assets and liabilities are separate from its owners, would definitely not work because of how costly it is, and the zero amount of control.
Management and Personnel I'll be in charge of the management of the shelter. Operation and success of this shelter will be my fulltime job. Since the location is on my property, I will have complete access whenever to the dogs, and the time. The only other employee I will have is the trainer I hired for dogs in need or customers. Volunteers will be vital as well to the shelter. Below is a table listing out some of the situations I will handle, under the different managements and the dog trainer
14
Owner & Manager ( Mercede Allen) Financial: All financial situations will be handled by me. With my recent completion of Office Accounting college course I know I have the experience and knowledge to handle financial situations. Human Resources: I'll be dealing the clients, volunteers and employees. Interning and working at North Country Animal League has given me real- world experience with potential adoptees and customers at a shelter. Administrative: Any administrative work will be my duty. All adoption requests, paperwork, and administrative tasks will be my side work along with daily shelter chores.
Production/ Operations: I will be in charge of operation being as it is my fulltime job. Information Technology: My experience in Business Administration has given me knowledge around computers. Any unknown solutions will be handled by a professional IT tech.
Human Resources: I will manage employees, and plan scheduling. Marketing: I will be using low cost and popular advertising i.e. social media sites (Facebook), print ads, commercials, and a website through Weebly.com.
(1) Dog Trainer The trainer will teach adopters or customers from the public to train their own dogs.

Anticipating I receive the requested loan amount of $5,030.71, and fundraise $2,500 as well, my cash position pre-startup is $2,424.07, when all the pre-startup expenses for the business are taken out. My monthly cash flow position allows me to have two months worth of fixed expenses. My cash flow also carries a positive balance each month.
