READING COMPREHENSION
Read the next text and answer the questions about the reading.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. When he was a little boy he always watched the
ships come and go in the harbor. He liked to listen to the sailors stories. He had dreams of adventure on
the high seas. He wanted to be a sailor.
Christopher went to school. He learned to read. He learned to make maps. He learned to use a
compass.
One book he read was by Marco Polo. The book was about the magnificent cities of India and
China. Marco Polo had seen these cities.
Christopher wanted more than ever to be a sailor. He wanted to go away on a ship. He wanted to
see the magnificent cities of India and China. He went to the harbor every day. He looked for ships from
China.
When Christopher Columbus was a man, he went to live in Portugal. There he talked to many
sailors. The Portuguese had sailed around Africa. They had sailed to India. They said the world was
round-
Columbus learned about the ocean currents. He learned about the wind. Columbus thought, if the
world is round, I can sail to the west. Then I can find the cities of India and China.
Columbus went to see the king of Portugal. He talked about his plans. He wanted ships. He
wanted money for a voyage to the west. But the king would not listen to him.
Columbus went to Spain. He talked to the king and queen. They would not give him the ships and
money he needed.
Then Columbuss wife died. He took his little son Diego to a monastery to live. One monk was a
friend of the queen. He talked to the queen about Columbus. She asked Columbus to visit her. Again
Columbus talked about sailing to the west. This time the queen said she would help Columbus.
The queen of Spain gave Columbus sailors. She gave him all he needed for the voyage. The ships
were the Santa Mara, the Pinta and the Nia.
Columbus and his men sailed west on August 3, 1492. The voyage was long. No one had sailed to
the west. The sailors were afraid. They wanted to back to Spain. But Columbus said No! We are going
to sail to India!
On October 12, 1492, they saw land. It was an Island. Columbus called it San Salvador. He said
the island was now the property of the king and queen of Spain.
The people on the island were brown. Columbus thought it was an island near India. He said they
would find India soon. But he found more islands. One was Cuba. The other was Santo Domingo.
Then Columbus sailed to Spain with the Nia and the Pinta. The Santa Mara and thirty men
stayed in Santo Domingo. It was Christmas. They said, We will call this place La Navidad.
Columbus had plants and animals to show the king and queen. He had some Indians, too. But he did
not have gold. The king and queen were not happy about this. They wanted him to sail again and find gold.
So Columbus went on a second voyage. On the second voyage he discovered new islands. One of
these islands he called San Juan. The people of the island called it Boriqun. Today we call it Puerto
Rico. The island was discovered on November 19, 1493.
Columbus went on third voyage and a fourth voyage. He discovered many islands. The islands are
now called the West Indies. But he could not find India and China and the places Marco Polo had talked
about in his book. Columbus was unhappy.
Many man were in Santo Domingo now. La Navidad was growing with every new voyage.
Sometimes the men didn`t have what they needed. Some of the men were sick. Many did not want to work.
They would not listen to Columbus. It was very difficult for Columbus. He did not know what to do.
The king and queen heard about what was happening in Santo Domingo. They sent a new
governor to the island.
This man was not Columbuss friend. One day he put Columbus on a ship for Spain. Columbus
went back to Spain a prisoner. But soon the king and queen gave him his liberty.
Columbus was sick. He was old. But he was still planning new voyages. The king and queen wanted
to help Columbus again. But Columbus died in Valladolid, Spain, in 1506.
