Itinerary Specially Prepared for
THE ARMIDALE SCHOOL
Soak it Up 100% Pure New Zealand Rugby Tour July 2014

WELCOME
It is my pleasure, as Managing Director of Total Rugby, to welcome The Armidale
School to New Zealand. The tradition that has formed between Total Rugby and the
South Island rugby community continues to flourish and we are delighted with the
opportunity to be in your company once again.

INTRODUCTORY NOTES

Weather: July is winter weather, which means it can be very cold. Temperatures
range from minus degrees in the mornings to 14 degrees during the day (on a good
day!)
Grounds: Grounds may be very wet. At times they are closed because of flooding. If
grounds are closed all effort will be made to find alternative venues. On the rare
occasion this is not possible the game may have to be cancelled. You should ensure
that all players have long studs in their boots. 18mm is recommended. Backs may
prefer shorter studs but blades, will, in most cases, be ineffective.
Game protocol: Most schools in New Zealand have their own haka and it is common
practice for the host school to perform the haka for overseas visiting teams. This is
meant as a challenge and it is up to the visiting team to accept it as they wish.
Generally, the team facing the challenge will line up on their own 10m line and
front up. This is seen as the most respectful. Three cheers are performed at the
end of the match and players shake hands with the opposition. Some clubs will
perform a haka but it is less common than with school teams. It pays to ask before
the game starts whether there will be a haka. Some teams may perform their haka
at the end of the game.
Mouthguards: Mouthgurards are compulsory at all levels of rugby in New Zealand.
The ref will inspect that you have a mouthguard at the start of the game.
Rugby Rules: Crutch binding in the scrums and lifting in the lineout is permitted in
New Zealand age group rugby.
After match Arrangements: It is customary in New Zealand rugby to have an after
match function for special visiting teams. It is a tradition we are keen to maintain.
The after match is generally held at the hosts clubrooms or school. Speeches are
made by the MC and respective captains. Often the visiting coach or manager is
also invited to speak. There is always an exchange of gifts. This can take the form
of a plaque/pendant, club or school ties, players jersey, touring booklet, pins/
badges, beanies or something else that has been prepared. Food is then served.
First Aid: It is not compulsory to have a first aid officer at every game. Initial first
aid is generally administered by coaching and/or management staff. Emergency
services are available for more serious injuries. The emergency number in New
Zealand is 111. There are after hours medical services available in all main centres.
If medical treatment is required because of an accident, the Accident Compensation
Commission pays for initial treatment ! although a surcharge is required to be
paid by the patient. Total Rugby will assist with coordinating medical services
including physiotherapy. It is expected that tour groups will have their own travel
insurance to cover medical expenses. Operators of tourist services have their own
policies regarding health and safety and issues arising should be managed directly
with them.
Equipment: Total Rugby has a number of training balls available. Please make an
early request for other specific equipment if required as it is possible to source a
range of gear.
Ice: Ice for sideline treatment of injuries is available from nearly all service stations
and supermarkets. It is recommended that teams bring an insulated container for
storing ice at matches.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included daily throughout your itinerary.
Breakfasts are continental (typically cereal, toast and spreads, tea/coffee), lunches
are packed and are to be collected each day as you leave breakfast, dinners are two
course (main course and dessert). Please note dinner and breakfast are not
included on the night the players are billeted, a packed lunch will be available on
arrival at Adams House.
Itinerary Times: All the times shown on this itinerary have been booked and
confirmed with the accommodation providers and activity operators. For meal time
changes please liaise directly with the hotel. If you wish to change timings for any
activities or find you are running behind schedule please contact Total Rugby so
that we can inform the operator

Vouchers: On your arrival your tour leader will be given a voucher booklet
containing the vouchers you will be required to hand over to our operators for the
various activities included in your tour.

Laundry: Self-service coin operated laundry facilities are available at your
Queenstown Hotel. Villas at Terrace Downs are equipped with washing machines
and dryers for self use. A full laundry service is provided at Adams House.
Security/valuables: This is your own responsibility. Valuables have been stolen
before. Please never assume that it will be okay to leave valuables unattended or
gear rooms unlocked. Every attempt will be made to assist you with your own
security.
Liaison: Total Rugby staff will be available 24 hours. Please use the cell phone
numbers on this page. Our staff will not always be with you during your activities
but we will check in with you each day, either in the evening to discuss the days
events and go over the next day, or in the morning. There are other people who are
also available to assist in most centres you will visit. They will either be the local
Total Rugby Coordinator or someone appointed by Total Rugby.
Luggage: Due to coach luggage capacity it is requested that each person is limited
to one suitcase and one carry-on bag. If your luggage is going to exceed this please
advise Total Rugby prior to your arrival.
Rugby Boots: New Zealand has very strict biosecurity regulations, during your flight
please complete the Passenger Arrival Card supplied by the airline with care and

James Jowsey
I have a passion for the game of rugby, after playing for 33
years and coming through the age groups in Otago I had my
first taste of NPC Rugby for North Otago in 1998. After that I
was selected to play for Otago the following year and had 3
great years there fulfilling my childhood dream. I then was
given an opportunity to play rugby in Italy for a year with ASR
Milano which I thoroughly enjoyed before returning to New
Zealand to play for Southland in the NPC. At the end of 2003 my
body had taken a hammering so I decided to pursue a career in
Education working as a Lecturer in Exercise Science and Anatomy and
Physiology. I am an NZRU accredited level 3 coach and have been coaching
senior rugby in New Zealand for the last 7 seasons.

The rest of today is free to enjoy the comforts of your resort.

Owen Franks
Owen made his debut for the Crusaders in 2009 and All Blacks debut just a
few months later. His call up to the All Blacks capped a national
representative career that included appearances for New Zealand Under 21
and New Zealand Schools.

He started against Ireland in the first Test of 2010, joining brother Ben in
becoming the first set of siblings to start a Test for the All Blacks since the
Brookes in 1997.

Many consider the powerful prop to be one of the world's best despite his
tender age for a practitioner of the dark arts.

His call up to the 2011 All Blacks squad came off the back of a stunning
Investec Super Rugby season with the Crusaders, where their scrum ruled
against every team they played against.

Franks has had a big last couple of years, playing a starring role for the
Crusaders and then consolidating himself at tighthead prop for the All Blacks.

A self-confessed fan of the physical stuff, Owen's scrummaging ability is
excellent but it is his work around the field which catches the eye
particularly his big hits on defence.

Owen made his debut for the Crusaders in 2009 when he came on as a
substitute against the Force and made his first start in the victory over the
Bulls where he made a big impact against the big South Africans.

He made his All Blacks debut just a few months later in front of a home
crowd in Christchurch, coming on as a replacement for John Afoa in the 59th
minute. His call up to the All Blacks capped a national representative career
that includes appearances for New Zealand Under 21 in 2007 and New
Zealand Schools in 2005. He earned his first Test start against South Africa at
Kings Park Stadium in Durban.
Canterbury caps: 18
Crusader caps: 88
Test caps: 57
Colin Slade
Colin Slade made his All Blacks debut in 2010, on the
back of an excellent season with Canterbury in the ITM
Cup.

Despite a horror run with injuries in 2011, suffering two
broken jaws in the same season for the Highlanders, he
was named in the All Blacks squad as Dan Carter's
understudy.

Slade racked up 62 points over five games for the New Zealand Under 19
side in 2006 during the IRB Under 19 World Championship.
Slade then made a mark in New Zealand's friendly against Fiji in July 2011.
He scored a try, two penalties and four conversions for the All Blacks. He
then played in New Zealand's opening Tri-Nations game against South Africa
and scored New Zealand's sixth try of the match, resulting in victory by 40
7. He came on as a substitute in New Zealand's next match against Australia.
He got his first Tr-Nations start against South Africa in the All Blacks
penultimate game.
He was selected for the 2011 RWC and came on as a substitute in the
opening match where he scored a conversion after Maa Nonus try. After Dan
Carter injured his groin and was forced out of the 2011 RWC it was
announced that Slade would become the All Blacks starting fly-half for the
remainder of the World Cup. Slade then aggravated a groin tear injury during
the Argentina game and was ruled out of the rest of the Cup.
Slade suffered a season-ending injury in March 2012, when he broke his
ankle playing for the Highlanders team.
Canterbury caps: 18
Crusader caps: 88
Test caps: 57

0930 Depart by coach after breakfast and its time to get cold!!

1000 INTERNATIONAL ANTARCTIC CENTRE & PENGUIN ENCOUNTER
