Dentro del idioma ingls existen dos tipos de artculos:
Artculo Definido o Determinado Artculo Indefinido o Indeterminado Comenzaremos profundizando sobre el primero de ellos: En el idioma ingls, el artculo definido THE es el equivalente en castellano a los siguientes significados: EL, LOS, LA , LAS y son invariables en gnero y nmero: The book. El libro. The books. Los libros.
The table. La mesa.
The tables. Las mesas. Ahora veremos sus principales usos: 1. En algunos casos con un sustantivo contable singular para designar una persona u objeto en general: The lion is a dangerous animal. El len es un animal peligroso. (Nos referimos a los leones en general) The roses are beautiful flowers. Las rosas son flores hermosas. (Nos referimos a las rosas en general) 2. Se emplea antes de algunos sustantivos gentilicios, cuando se quiere significar los habitantes de determinado pas: The English like going to the theatre. A los ingleses les gusta ir a teatro. The Spanish are very polite. Los espaoles son muy amables. 3. Generalmente se usa con el nombre de: Ros: The River Nile, The River Amazonas. (El ro Nilo, El ro Amazonas). Ocanos y Mares: The Pacific Ocean, The Mediterranean Sea. (El Ocano Pacfico, El Mar Mediterrneo). Canales: The Panama Canal, The Suez Canal. (El Canal de Panam, El Canal de Suez). Desiertos: The Sahara, The Gobi Desert. (El Desierto de Sahara, El Desierto de Gobi). Grupos de Islas: The West Indies, The Canaries. (Las Indias Occidentales, Las Islas Canarias). Hoteles y Cines: The Odeon Cinema, The Ritz Hotel. (El cine Oden, El Hotel Ritz) Museos: The Louvre Museum, The Prado Museum. (El Museo Louvre, El Museo del Prado) Restaurants: The Hard Rock Caf. La mayora de las regiones geogrficas: The Far East. (El Lejano Oeste). 4. Con instrumentos musicales y bailes: The piano. (El piano). The guitar. (La guitarra). The tango. (El tango). Con ttulos: The President. (El Presidente). The Queen. (La Reina). The King. (El Rey). Con adjetivos usados como sutantivos plurales: The rich. (Los ricos). The poor. (Los pobres). Con referencias histricas y eventos: The French Revolution. (La Revolucin Francesa). The First War World. (La Primera Guerra Mundial). Con sustantivos que son nicos:
The Moon (La Luna) ;The Sun (El Sol); The World.
Artculo Indeterminado A, AN El artculo indeterminado o indefinido en el idioma ingls se conoce como A y AN, y su significado puede traducirse como UN y UNA.
A dog. Un perro. An elephant. Un elephante. A house. Una casa. An apple. Una manzana. Ambos artculos significan lo mismo y son invariables en gnero y nmero, ya que se utiliza tanto para el masculino como para el femenino y carece de plural. A: se utiliza delante de palabras que comienzan con consonante: A car. Un automvil. A table. Una mesa. AN: se utiliza delante de palabras que comienzan con vocal: An elephant. Un elefante. An apple. Una manzana. Ahora veremos algunos de los usos que tiene el artculo indeterminado o indefinido dentro de la lengua inglesa, aunque cabe destacar que se utiliza para las mismas funciones que en el castellano: Se usa A y AN para designar a personas y objetos:
An umbrella. Un paraguas. A book. Un libro. A woman. Una mujer.
Se usa A y AN delante de profesiones (difiere del espaol en que la profesin no necesita preceder de un o una) : He is a lawyer. l es un abogado. I am a doctor. Yo soy un doctor. She is an engineer. Ella es un ingeniero. Se usa para designar a un grupo de personas, animales o cosas de la misma clase: A cat is a quiet pet. Un gato es un animal tranquilo. (Se refiere a los gatos en general)
Tambin se utiliza delante de expresiones que indican una cantidad determinada de objetos o personas: A lot of people. Una gran cantidad de gente. A dozen of apples. Una docena de manzanas. En una prxima entrega veremos las omisiones tanto de los artculos determinados como indeterminados.

Los Adjetivos Utilizamos generalmente la palabra adjetivo para describir palabras con las cuales podemos hacer referencia a una cualidad de un sustantivo o de un pronombre, por ejemplo: The black shoes Los zapatos negros A sad boy Un muchacho triste A tall woman Una mujer alta
La mayora de los adjetivos pueden ser utilizados de dos maneras: deforma atributiva, precediendo al sustantivo que acompaan y de forma predicativa ubicndolo a continuacin del verbo, por ejemplo: Susan is a young woman. (Atributiva) Susan es una joven mujer. Peter and Tom are good pupils. (Atributiva) Peter y Tom son buenos alumnos. They are beutiful girls. (Atributiva) Ellas son muchachas hermosas. Mary is intelligent. (Predicativa) Mary es inteligente. You are sad. (Predicativa) Tu ests triste. The ice cream is delicious. (Predicativa) El helado est delicioso. Los adjetivos en ingls son invariables en cuanto a gnero y nmero, sin importar si el sustantivo al cual acompaan est en singular o plural, por ejemplo: The intelligent man El hombre inteligente The intelligent men Los hombres inteligentes The beautiful girl La hermosa muchacha The beautiful girls La hermosas muchachas Tambin existe la posibilidad de que varios adjetivos acompaen a unmismo sustantivo y para eso usualmente se respeta el siguiente orden: Tamao large small big Edad/Temperatura new young hot old cold Forma circular round oval square Color red pink green yellow Origen English Spanish Italian Russian Material plastic wooden metal Propsito shopping riding writing

Adjetivos Demostrativos THIS, THAT, THESE, THOSE Los adjetivos demostrativos son aquellos que se utilizan para determinar la ubicacin de las cosas y son los siguientes:
A diferencia del idioma espaol, en el que se determina la proximidad con ESTO, ESO y AQUELLO, en el idioma ingls slo se utilizan dos grados de proximidad: THIS, para sealar lo que se encuentra ms cerca del sujeto, y THAT para lo que est ms alejado. Estos adjetivos concuerdan en nmero, ya sea en singular o en plural, con el sustantivo al que acompaan, mientras que en gnero no existen diferencias entre masculino y femenino: This flower is beautiful. Esta flor es hermosa. This car is dirty. Este automvil est sucio. That house is expensive. Aquella casa es costosa. That dog is bad. Aquel perro es malo. These apples are cheap. Estas manzanas son baratas. These pencils are in the box. Estos lpices estn en la caja. Those stars are in the sky. Aquellas estrellas estn en el cielo. Those boys are my friends. Aquellos nios son mis amigos. El adjetivo demostrativo THIS tambin puede utilizarse para presentar a alguien: John, this is Mike. (John, este es Mike). Tambin se utiliza THIS para comenzar un relato de manera coloquial: This is the story (Esta es la historia) THAT sirve para indicar algo que ha ocurrido o algo que alguien ha dicho. That was an incredible story. (Ha sido una historia increble). Ahora te proponemos completar las siguientes oraciones con el adjetivo demostrativo correspondiente: 1. Adjetivos Posesivos En el idioma ingls, los adjetivos posesivos se utilizan para hacer referencia al poseedor de un determinado objeto y son usados con mucha frecuencia, ms que en el idioma espaol. En general preceden a los sustantivos como objetos personales, partes del cuerpo, parentesco, vestimenta. Los adjetivos posesivos y su significado son los siguientes:
ADJETIVO POSESIVO SIGNIFICADO MY Mo / ma / mos / mas YOUR Tuyo / tuya / tuyos / tuyas HIS Suyo / suya / suyos / suyas (de l) HER Suyo / suya / suyos / suyas (de ella) ITS Suyo / suya / suyos / suyas (de animal u objeto) OUR Nuestro / nuestra nuestros / nuestras YOUR Su / sus (de ustedes) THEIR Suyo / suya / suyos / suyas ( de ellos / ellas)
Observa que la forma ITS se emplea cuando el poseedor es un animal u objeto, aunque muchas veces se hace una excepcin cuando existe afecto hacia el animal, en este caso se puede utilizar HIS o HER dependiendo del gnero, por ejemplo: That is its house. Aquella es su casa. (Hace referencia a la casa del perro)
That is his house. Aquella es su casa. (Hace referencia a la casa del perro si es macho) That is her house. Aquella es su casa. (Hace referencia a la casa de la perra) Los adjetivos posesivos en ingls varan segn el poseedor (1, 2 o 3 persona del singular o plural), pero a diferencia del espaol, no concuerdan en nmero con el objeto posedo: This is my brother. Este es mi hermano. This is my daughter. Esta es mi hija. They are my brother. Ellos son mis hermanos. They are my sisters. Ellas son mis hijas. Aqu vemos algunos ejemplos: I forget my books at home. Yo me olvid mis libros en casa. He broke his watch yesterday. l rompi su reloj ayer. We will sell our car. Venderemos nuestro auto. Those are their pictures. Aquellos son sus cuadros. She is wearing her new dress. Ella est usando su vestido nuevo.

Adverbios En la entrega de hoy les ofrecemos un tema que en muchas ocasiones suele suscitar confusin: los adverbios. Estas palabras o frases estn cercanamente conectadas con el verbo en una oracin. Mientras un verbo describe la accin o el estado de cosas o personas, un adverbio aade informacin acerca de la manera, lugar y tiempo en que se realiza. Los adverbios responden a las siguientes preguntas: HOW? Cmo? WHERE? Dnde? WHEN? Cundo? HOW OFTEN? Con qu frecuencia? Por ejemplo: The layers usually work slowly in the building during the afternoon. Los obreros usualmente trabajan lentamente en el edificio durante la tarde. How do they work? Slowly ( Lentamente) Adverbio de modo Where do they work? In the building (En el edificio) Adverbio de lugar When do they work? During the afternoon (Durante la tarde) Adverbio de tiempo How often do they work? Usually (Usualmente) Adverbio de frecuencia
Los adverbios pueden tener las siguientes formas: Una sola palabra, por ejemplo: VERY Muy SELDOM Raramente NEVER Nunca ALWAYS Siempre TOMORROW Maana Una frase preposicional, por ejemplo: ON THE ROAD En el camino BY TRAIN En tren BY CHANCE Por casualidad AT NIGHT En la noche Una frase sin preposicin, por ejemplo: EVERY DAY Todos los das LAST NIGHT Anoche TOMORROW MORNING Maana a la maana THE FOLLOWING DAY Al da siguiente Una clusula, por ejemplo: WHEN SHE ARRIVED Cuando ella lleg AS SOON AS HE HAS FINISHED Tan pronto como l haya terminado WHILE I WAS PLAYING Mientras yo estaba jugando
Posicin de los Adverbios en una oracin Ya hemos aprendido acerca de los Adverbios y hoy les proponemos conocer como se ubican en una oracin cuando utilizamos ms de uno de ellos. Por lo general el orden de los adverbios es el siguiente: Adverbio de Modo Adverbio de Lugar Adverbio de tiempo
Por ejemplo: Sally read the lesson slowly in her room yesterday. Sally ley la leccin lentamente in su habitacin ayer. SLOWLY IN HER ROOM YESTERDAY Adverbio de Modo Adverbio de Lugar Adverbio de tiempo Cabe sealar que los adverbios de tiempo pueden ir colocados tambin al comienzo de la oracin, por ejemplo: Yesterday, Sally read the lesson slowly in her room. Cuando en la oracin existen dos o ms adverbios de tiempo o lugar, primero se colocan las unidades ms cortas, ms pequeas y ms exactas, por ejemplo: I lived in a small house in a nice area of London. Yo viva en una pequea casa en una hermosa rea de Londres. Los adverbios de frecuencia que se expresan a travs de una sola palabra se colocan antes del verbo principal y despus del verbo TO BE, por ejemplo: We normally go to work by bus. Nosotros normalmente vamos a trabajar en autobus. Sam is always late for work. Sam siempre est retrasado para el trabajo. Los adverbios de frecuencia compuestos por dos o ms palabras se colocan generalmente al final de la oracin y antes de los adverbios que denotan posicin en el tiempo, por ejemplo: My friends go to the river every day in summer. Mis amigos van al ro todos los das en verano.

Preposiciones de Tiempo: AT, IN y ON El uso de las preposiciones dentro del idioma ingls con frecuencia se transforma en una tortura ya que no existe un mtodo mgico para su aprendizaje y es por ello que se recomienda su ejercitacin y observar su empleo en diferentes textos para luego incluirlas en nuestro vocabulario. En esta oportunidad veremos algunos de los usos de tres preposiciones de tiempo que generalmente se prestan a confusin. Ellas son AT, IN y ON.
La preposicin AT se utiliza para referirnos a las horas del da: At 4.30 A las 4.30 At 9 oclock A las 9 en punto Tambin para mencionar momentos puntuales del da: At night A la noche At noon Al medioda At midnight A la medianoche Y finalmente para hacer referencia a celebraciones: At Easter En Pascuas At Christmas En Navidad At Halloween En Noche de Brujas La preposicin IN se utiliza para expresar partes o divisiones del da: In the morning En la maana In the afternoon En la tarde Para hablar sobre los meses: In September En septiembre In May En mayo y como expresin de futuro, para hacer mencin sobre un suceso que tendr lugar dentro de un perodo de tiempo especfico: In eight months time Dentro de ocho meses La preposicin ON la podemos utilizar para acompaar los das de la semana: I will visit you on Saturday Te visitar el sbado She travelled on Tuesday Ella viaj el martes o tambin para las partes o divisiones del da, pero en este caso debemos aclarar de que da hablamos: They will travel to Europe on Sunday morning. Ellos viajarn a Europa el domingo a la maana. I didnt go to work on Tuesday afternoon. No fui a trabajar el martes a la tarde. y finalmente utilizaremos ON para mencionar fechas: On 23th September el 23 de septiembre On 12th April el 12 de abril
