Teach Remote Stage 2 Current Principals Reference

The following reference outlines the ways Corrie Baxter demonstrates the 7 Teacher
Standards at the Highly Accomplished level at Yiyili Aboriginal Community School.

Yiyili Aboriginal Community School (YACS) is a very remote, independent
Indigenous community school. It began at about the same time as the
community in 1982 and has since gone from strength to strength. YACS prides
itself on reducing the impact of remoteness through embracing technology and
targeted recruitment of the best teachers. YACS has also made use of recent
funding to further enrich learning opportunities through the building of an
instructional kitchen and library. This has enabled special projects that develop
both hospitality and small business skills. Corrie has been a very important team
member for a number of years and her experience is valued both within the
school community and wider AICS network.
Corrie began teaching at YACS in 2010, and she has taught Junior Primary and
Middle Primary classes during her time of employment here. Curriculum
consultants and leadership quickly identified her classroom practice as an
example of best practice. In particular, her working relationship with Aboriginal
Education Workers (AEWs) and community members. Corrie is now YACS
Numeracy Curriculum Leader following 2 years in the role of Numeracy Lead
Teacher. During this time she has developed a close working relationship with
respected numeracy and mathematics specialists such as Kaye Treacy and Peter
Sullivan. Both of who are very highly regarded in their fields of expertise. Corrie
has had the opportunity to contribute to research in the field of mathematics
education, in particular the development of the AICS Numeracy Portal (on-line
assessment and planning tool), and its continued maintenance and relevance in
light of current and ongoing research.
In her role as Numeracy Curriculum Leader at YACS, she has been responsible
for the maintenance of whole school numeracy and mathematics assessment
data, and the use of this in targeted planning (teacher and school level). Her role
has required her to both mentor and coach existing and new staff in the use of
the AICS portal, and in effective numeracy and mathematics teaching. In order to
do this, Corrie has kept abreast of current research and has maintained a close
working relationship with fellow specialist numeracy curriculum leaders within
the AICS network of schools. She has been involved in numerous educational
conferences both as a presenter and active participant.

YACS School Board and leadership team have recognised Corries particular
strength in coordination of assessment data and supporting teachers in
evaluating data and becoming proficient at using data to inform planning and
classroom practice.
Corrie has modelled culturally effective and reflective practice as coach and
mentor, both for teachers and classroom assistants (AEWs). Her work with
AEWs has been recognised within the AICS network as an example of best
practice in meeting Indigenous cultural needs and expectations.
Corrie has lead moderation sessions to develop school wide consensus on
student achievement against specific outcomes. This has been particularly
important as YACS moved towards implementation of the Australian Curriculum.
Her knowledge and expertise has been used to inform our changing reporting
policy and procedure.
Corrie is a valued and important member of the YACS team. She motivates staff
to have a pro-active, reflective approach to their numeracy and mathematics
teaching and enables YACS students to achieve the best possible results.
