Structural Biology & Protein Design at Monsanto

Summary
Structural biologist by choice - but I'd rather not define myself as a protein crystallographer :) My group
integrates several disciplines and also helps our company to bridge hardcore plant biology with the world of
molecular and structural studies.
In broad strokes, if it's something to do with proteins - then I am interested. Protein engineering, expression,
advanced molecular cloning & suchlike. Drug discovery research. Advanced protein engineering and protein
expression technology development. Novel bio-pharmaceuticals - "biologics by design".
Specialties: Expert structural biologist. Gene-2-structure specialist. Protein expressionist/protein engineer.
Experience
Structural Biology & Protein Design at Monsanto
January 2014 - Present (6 months)
My team now comprises a convenient combination of experimental structural biology and protein design :)
We are equipped to handle any(*) structure-based protein discovery/design/optimization challenge.
(*) except designing self-aware Twinkies. A line must be drawn somewhere.

same stuff as earlier, but with plants - and twice as hard.
Principal research scientist at Pfizer Global R&D
May 2007 - May 2009 (2 years 1 month)
Multidisciplinary research centered on structure-driven drug discovery. Active member of several project
teams.

United States Patent 7811595 Issued October 12, 2010
Inventors: Artem Evdokimov
The present disclosure relates to HIF-1# prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors, compositions which comprise the
HIF-1# prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors described herein and to methods for controlling, inter alia, Peripheral
Vascular Disease (PVD), Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) etc.
Three dimensional coordinates of HPTPbeta
United States Patent 7769575 Issued October 3, 2010
Inventors: Artem Evdokimov
The crystal structures of catalytic domain of HPTPbeta, both ligand-bound and ligand-free are described.
These structures are useful in computer aided drug design for identifying compounds that bind or activate
HPTPbeta and thereby modulate angiogenesis mediated disorders etc.
THREE DIMENSIONAL COORDINATES OF HYPOXIA INDUCIBLE FACTOR 1 ALPHA (HIF-1
ALPHA) PROLYL HYDROXYLASE
United States Patent 20090240475 Issued September 24, 2009
Inventors: Artem Evdokimov
The crystal structure of ligand-bound EGLN1 catalytic domain of prolyl hydroxylase is disclosed. These
coordinates are useful in computer aided drug design for identifying compounds that regulate EGLN1 prolyl
hydroxylase and thereby regulate HIF-regulated disorders.
Tetrahydroisoquinolnyl sulfamic acids
United States Patent 20050154011 Issued July 14, 2005
Inventors: Artem Evdokimov
Compounds of formula (I): are effective in the treatment of protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTPase) mediated
disorder such as diabetes.
Anti-(retro)viral conjugates of saccharides and acetamidino or guanidino compounds
United States Patent 6642365 Issued November 4, 2003
Inventors: Artem Evdokimov
Conjugates of a saccharide and an acetamidino- or guanidino-compound, of the formula: wherein A is CH or
NH ; X is a linear or branched C -C alkyl chain optionally containing hydroxy, amino and/or oxo groups; n is
an integer from 1 to 6 are effective against early stages of HIV infection.

3 people have recommended Artem
"Artem is probably the smartest person I've ever worked with. His knowledge and ability in all aspects of
molecular biology, protein biochemistry and protein crystallography is unparalleled. He is always willing to
help others and give his insight on a problem you may be struggling with. I feel privileged to have worked
with him for three years at Pfizer."
Holly S., Principal Scientist, Pfizer, worked directly with Artem at Pfizer Global R&D
"Artem is one of those unique scientists who not only loves a challenge but rolls up his sleeves and plunges
right in to overcome it. His versatile skill set encompasses all phases of structure projects from cloning to
solution and he always brings unique perspectives to problem-solving. Artem is always curious about what
drives successful projects and his investigations have yielded multiple insights on issues such as surface
mutagenesis for protein packing and cloning strategies for large complexes to improve stability. I truly
believe there is no problem he cannot overcome. He accomplishes all this with no hint of arrogance but rather
is willing to share his ideas with other members of the team as well as incorporate others ideas and freely
share the credit for success. Artem will be an asset to any group he comes to work for not only because of his
own productivity but because he makes everyone around him more productive as well."
Sam S., Scientist, Pfizer, worked directly with Artem at Pfizer Global R&D
"Artem is simply the best young crystallographer with whom I have worked in my fifteen year career. He has
true experience and real, hands-on expertise in all steps of gene to structure philosophy for structural biology,
particularly as it applies to the process of drug design. He is communicative and personable and has
management expertise in addition to his very strong technical credentials. I have had a professional, peer
relationship with Artem during both his P&G and Pfizer tenure and can therefore unequivocally recommend
him based upon real personal experience."
Richard W., Associate Research Fellow, Pfizer, managed Artem indirectly at Pfizer
