History
In 2010, a request was made by the then Minister Of Tourism & Culture, Datuk Dr
Ng Yen Yen to Mr Rolf Michael Engel to come up with ideas for a new branding of
Malaysia in particular for the island of Langkawi.
Mr Engel began by initiating AECOM or Asia Earth Conference Malaysia Sdn Bhd
2010 to realize the ideas he compiled.
He is the Founder and a Consultant for the creation and production of the individual
events produced under AECOM.

Mission
AECOM events aim to create awareness for our ecology, environment, sustainability
and the reduction of carbon footprints.
This AECOM does creatively and entertaining, with the aim to attract the masses.
The idea of holding these events is designed to put Malaysia in particular Langkawi
on the world map, as an outstanding travel destination of cultural richness,
modernity and environmental consciousness.

There would be an online Call for Entries to gather creative new ideas for participation in Ecolympics
From each category will be choosen 5 ideas for the nale and the participants will be invited to show
their ideas in an exhibition environment.

Solar Cooking Pot
A solar cooking pot is a device which uses sunlight
as its energy source. Because they use no fuel and
cost nothing to run, they are popular in hot climate
countries like India and Africa. (In India, without a
solar cooker, the average family normally needs
between 3 to 7 kg of wood per day.
Solar Water Disinfection
Solar water disinfection, also known as SODIS, is a
method of disinfecting water using only sunlight and
plastic PET bottles. SODIS is an effective, economical
and environmentally friendly method for treating
water where fuel or cookers are unavailable or
prohibitively expensive. Studies have shown that
the SODIS method helps to reduce incidences of
diarrhoea from 30-80%. This is urgently necessary as
more than 4000 children still die every day from the
consequences of diarrhoes.
SkySails (Multiple Award
Winner)
Turning wind into prot. Skysails is a wind propulsion
system that when used, can help ships consume from
10-35% less fuel. Under optimal wind conditions, fuel
consumption can temporarily be cut by up to 50%.
($5,000 per day)
Micro Hydro
Micro Hydro is a term used for hydroelectric power
installations that typically produce up to 100 KW
of power. These installations can provide power
to an isolated home or small community, and are
sometimes connected to electric power networks.
Properly designed, a Micro Hydro system causes
minimal environmental disruption to the stream and
can coexist with the native ecology. A Micro Hydro
which produces 30KWH (262,800 KWH annually)
can supply energy for 529 households.

SKYSAILS POWER
High Altitude Wind Power
The worldwide patented SkySails Power system consists of ve
main components: a free ying kite with rope, a launch and
recovery system, an automated control system, a generator for
producing electrical power and a support platform.
The SkySails Power system is operated at altitudes of between 200
and 800 meters. It can be installed on both conventional offshore
foundations and on oating platforms. That way the SkySails Power
system can also be secured quickly and easily at water depths of
down to 700 meters using traditional anchoring technologies and
readily available offshore support vessels.
Energy is generated as the kite pulls the rope from a drum that is
connected to an electric power generator. This is the power phase
in which electrical power is produced.
The return phase begins once the rope has been extended to its
maximum length. The kite is then automatically own into a position
where its pulling force is very low. This is when the generator acts
as a motor and reels in the rope until its extended length is short
enough for the next energy-generation phase to begin. This process
consumes only a fraction of the power generated during the power
phase. The residual excess energy is fed into the electrical power
grid.
The SkySails Power system can also be utilized onshore. Mobile
units are also available that can be used as stand-alone solutions
to provide electricity and/or fresh water through seawater
desalination.

BULB 60 WATT
We take for granted our electric lights, windows and skylights to access the
suns glow, but for those living in close-together shacks with corrugated-metal
roofs, a stray ray is welcome, and something that can spread light to the
darkest interior corners can be a dream come true.
Developed in Brazil to address
under-illuminated slums, this simple
design idea has been adopted
by MIT students and expanded
to other developing areas where
many low-income homes lack
access to either daylight or
electricity.

We live in the trash time: we produce trash and we become trash.
These life-size gures have traveled the world, from the Pyramids of
Giza to the Great Wall of China as an art installation meant to provoke
thoughts about the amount of garbage we humans create and how it
affects the world.

PLASTIKI
A handpicked crew of adventurers, scientitsts and creatives are to sail
across the Pacic on the Plastiki a 60-foot catamaran made from
reclaimed plastic bottles. Their mission is to beat waste by inspiring
sustainable solutions and to highlight the ecological damage being
done to the worlds oceans.

PLANET SOLAR
PlanetSolar is a catamaran that runs solely on energy found in light.
The additional removable parts allow it to expose a total of 516 m2
of photovoltaic surface (solar panels) to the sun. This impressive data
make it the biggest solar run ship in the world.
