Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1. State the rules of Subject Verb Agreement;
2. Participate in the class discussion actively; and
3. Construct their own sentences using correct Subject Verb Agreement.

Priming
A. Daily routine

4) Recall of the previous lesson

Activity
Let the students read the following sentences:
a. Lita sings gracefully.
b. Lita and Pepito sing gracefully
c. He sings gracefully.
d. They sing gracefully.

Analysis:
The students will answer the following questions based on the sentences above.
1. What are the highlighted words in the given sentences?
2. What do we call these highlighted words in yellow? How about in green?
3. What do you notice about the subject and the verb?

Abstraction:
15 Rules on Subject-Verb Agreement

1. Singular subjects take singular verbs. Plural subjects take plural verbs.
Examples:
a) Envy is ignorance; imitation is suicide. (singular)
b) We recognize our own rejected thoughts. (Plural)
2. The verb agrees only with its subject. Words between subject and verb do not affect the number
of the subject. Be careful of phrases: together with, in addition to, as well as and accompanied
by. Singular subjects followed by these phrases take singular verb.
Examples:
a) The dog as well as the cat eats the food.
b) Kara together with her teammates presents a fearsome opponent on the field.
c) Jim as well as Sally and Joe, is on the team.
3. Some indefinite pronouns (some, none, many, most) may be either singular or plural: with
uncountable, use singular; with countable, use plural
Examples:
a) Some of the sugar is on the floor.
b) Some of the students feel that the teacher grades too harshly.
4. A compound subject joined by and, not only, but also takes a plural verb. When and referred to
as one unit, it takes singular verb.
Examples:
a) The actress and the model are going to have a movie together
b) The host and model actress is getting married.
c) Not only the students are required to attend the mass, but also the teachers.
5. The following are singular indefinite pronouns that require singular verb. Each, either, neither,
one, no one, everyone, someone, anyone, everybody, anybody, somebody, nobody, anything,
something, nothing.
Examples:
a) Each of the boys plans to apply for the scholarships.
b) Anything is possible when you put your mind to it.
6. When subjects are joined by OR or NOR, the verb agrees the subject closer to it.
Examples:
a) Either Martha or her sisters are writing the scripts.
b) Neither the students nor the teacher is happy about the test results.
7. The expression the number is followed by a singular verb while the expression a number is
followed by a plural verb.
Examples:
a) The number of people we need to hire is thirteen.
b) A number of people have written in about this subject.
8. Use a singular verb with sums of money or periods of time.
Examples:
a) Ten dollars is a high price to pay.
b) Five years is the maximum sentence for that offense.
9. Titles of single entities (books, organizations, countries, etc.) are always singular.
Examples:
a) The Grapes of Wrath takes a long time to read.
b) Les Miserables is a fantastic movie.
10. With words that indicate portionspercent, fraction, part, majority, some, all, none, remainder,
and so forth look at the noun in your of phrase to determine whether to use a singular or
plural verb.
Examples:
a) Fifty percent of the pie has disappeared.
b) Fifty percent of the pies have disappeared.
