Equation: equality(=) with variables(x, y, z, etc.)
2x 5 = 21, 0.4 0.5x = 2y, x
2
2x 3 = 0 , x = 0, x + y + z = 2 are
all equations.
3x 3, 2 = 2, 5x 3y are not equations.
Solution of equation: the value of variables that satisfy the equations
For function 2x 5 = 21, when x = 13, LHS=2 13 5 = 21=RHS,
then x = 13 is the solution of equation 2x 5 = 21
The process of nding the solutions is called solve equations.

Linear equation
In an equation, if there is only one variable, and the power for this
variable is 1, then this equation is called linear equation.
2x 5 = 21, 4y 5 = 4 + 9y,
4x5

x 0.6 are all linear equations.
Example (Tell whether it is a equation? a linear equation?)
(1) 3x 4 = 6 3y
(2) 0.6z 0.45 = 0.8z + 1
(3) 2x

Properties of equation
The equation will keep unchanged if we
Add or subtract the same algebraic expression (or a number)
Multiply or divided by the same non-zero number
Example
(1) from a + 2 = b + 2, we subtract the same number , we have
a = b
(2) from 3a = 3b, we divided by the same number , we have
a = b
(3) from 3x 2 = 7, we add the the same number , we have
3x =
(4) from 1.5a = 4, we multiply the same number , we have
6a =

Transposition of terms
In an equation, we move a term from one side to the other side. In this
process, we need to change the sign of this term.
Example (5x 2 = 8)
Add 2 on both sides: 5x 2 + 2 = 8 + 2 which is 5x = 8 + 2
The above process is equivalent to move 2 to the other side.
Exercise (Move all the numbers to the right hand side)
(1) 2x + 6 = 1
(2) 3x 3 = 7
(3) 5x

Solve linear equation
Move all variable terms to the left hand side
Move all number terms to the right hand side
Unite like terms
Make the coecient of left hand side to be 1
Example (Solve 7x + 2 = 2x 4)
step 1(variable terms): 7x + 2 2x = 4
step 2(number terms): 7x 2x = 4 2
step 3(unite like terms): (7 2)x = 6 which is 9x = 6
step 4(coecient of x):

Remove the denominators
To simplify an equation, we need to multiply a number on both sides to
remove the denominator.
Example (Solve equation
1
4
x =
1
2
x + 3)
We have denominator 4 and 2, to remove the denominators, we can
multiply 4 on both side, we have
1
4
x 4 =
1
2
x 4 + 3 4
the equation is simplied to be x = 2x + 12
