Non-Western Cultures and the Western Tradition

Course Description:
This course examines changing views of people, nature and culture in Western
civilization as related to the impact of non-Western influences, including the use and
interpretation of data on non-Western peoples and cultures.

Titanium
Students will be required to access course materials on the Internet through the Titanium
website for the course. All assignments will be submitted using the Turn-it-in links provided
at the Titanium website for this course. Additionally, Reading Journals and Film Essays will be
submitted to the Instructor as e-mail attachments.

Prerequisites:
None

Requirements and Grading:

Reading Journals. You will be required to write three Reading Journals. Each journal will
cover one part of the assigned book. Each journal must be submitted by its due date (see
Course Schedule below). Instructions for each journal will be posted on Titanium. Each journal
is worth up to 100 points. Journal 1 will be divided into two halves.
Reading Journal 1. First Half and Second Half The Age of Discovery
Reading Journal 2 Consequences
Reading Journal 3 Interconnectedness
Film Essays. You will be required to write four film essays. Each film essay will cover one
assigned film, or one set of film clips. Each film essay must be submitted by its due date (see
Course Schedule below). Instructions for each film essay will be posted on Titanium. Each
film essay is worth up to 25 points.

These assignments fulfill the General Education III writing requirement. They will be assessed
according to the University Policy (UPS 411.201:1). Writing assignments in General
Education courses should involve the organization and expression of complex data or ideas.
Your assignments will receive careful and timely evaluations of writing so that deficiencies
are identified and suggestions for improvement and/or for means of remediation are offered.
Assessments of the students writing competence shall be used in determining the final course
grade (UPS 411.201:1).

Your course grade will be calculated as follows:
Reading Journal 1, First Half: 0- 50 points
Reading Journal 1, Second Half: 0- 50 points
Reading Journal 2: 0-100 points
Reading Journal 3: 0-100 points
Film Essay 1: 0- 25 points
Film Essay 2: 0- 25 points
Film Essay 3: 0- 25 points
Film Essay 4: 0- 25 points
Total Possible Points: 0-400 points
GRADING SCALE: Grades will be assigned as follows:
A 93-100%= 370-400 points
A- 90-92 % = 358-369 points
B+ 88-89 % = 350-357 points
B 83-87 % = 330-349 points
B- 80-82 % = 318-329 points

C+ 78-79 % = 310-317 points
C 73-77 % = 290-309 points
C- 70-72 % = 278-389 points
D+ 68-69 % = 270-277 points
D 60-67 % = 238-269 points
F 59% and below = 237 points and below

I reserve the right to curve the grades based on the distribution of scores and improvement, but
no one will receive a grade lower than indicated in the scale above.
Academic Misconduct:
Students are expected to produce original work. Copying or closely paraphrasing text
from any other source without proper attribution (use of quotations marks and citing the
source), or taking information or ideas without proper attribution, is plagiarism. Collaboration
on exams and other assignments is not permitted. Students who produce substantially similar
work may be required to take exams on campus in a supervised environment or complete an
alternative assignment. Students caught cheating will receive a grade penalty, including a zero
for the course work that they cheated on, an F as their course grade, and will be reported to
the Office of Student Affairs at my discretion. Behavior that disrupts the on-line classroom
environment, such as cyber-bullying, mobbing, or use of language that would offend a
reasonable person, will not be tolerated. See the Student Handbook and the Office of Student
Affairs website for CSUF policies on Academic Integrity and Misconduct.
Disabilities:
Students with documented disabilities or special needs will be accommodated
according to the arrangements specified by the Disability Support Services (DSS) office.

Policy on Late Assignments:
Late assignments are not accepted, except in cases of genuine emergency.

Course Schedule:
This is a fast-paced course. Generally, you should read one chapter and write answers to the
Reading Journal questions for that chapter each day. You may complete any of the assignments
early, to accommodate your own schedule. You must complete all assignments by their due
dates.
