10 In some cases HDR candidates research is supervised across more than one faculty (teaching faculties) but each course is
managed by just one faculty (the managing faculty). HDR completions are provided by teaching faculty as opposed to
managing faculty due to funding for HDR completions being allocated at the candidature level.

Monash University in brief
Monash University enrolled its rst students at the Clayton
campus in 1961 when the University consisted of the faculties of
Arts, Economics and Politics, Engineering, Medicine and Science.
It is now Australias largest university with over 63,000 students
enrolled at its six Australian campuses at Berwick, Cauleld,
Clayton, Gippsland, Parkville and Peninsula and its overseas
campuses in Sunway (Malaysia) and South Africa.
The University engages in an extensive range of high quality
research and provides a wide range of undergraduate and
postgraduate programs via conventional and exible study modes
including distance education and intensive learning modules.
Today, almost 10,000 students study off-campus.
The Universitys research and coursework programs, many
of which are multi-disciplinary, are currently provided through
ten faculties: Art, Design and Architecture, Arts, Business and
Economics, Education, Engineering, Information Technology,
Law, Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, Pharmacy and
Pharmaceutical Sciences and Science.
Monash University is a richly diverse and multicultural community
serving Indigenous and recent Australians together with students
from over one hundred countries. The latter, mainly from Malaysia,
China, Indonesia, and Singapore, make up some 35 per cent of
all enrolments. Almost 9000 students are enrolled in programs
outside of Australia, mainly in the Asia Pacic region.
The information presented in this document comes from the
annual student, staff, research and nance statistical collections
submitted to the Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate
Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education ( DIICCSRTE),
Monash annual reports and reports compiled by Universities
Australia.

5 Figures are the full-time equivalent ( FTE) and include DIICCSRTE non-reportable staff employed in independent
operations (147 in 2008, 155 in 2009, 117 in 2010, 112 in 2011 and 125 in 2012).
6 DIICCSRTE reportable staff gures given here do not include staff employed at Monash Sunway ( Malaysia) and Monash
South Africa. The staff headcount gures for 2012 for these campuses are 691 and 283 respectively.
7 The Student: Staff ratio is calculated using the DIICCSRTE IPP Academic including casual methodology. This denition
excludes offshore and work experience in industry load. Student Staff Ratio ( SSR) calculations include academic staff
employed in Academic Organisation Units (AOU) and include both full-time/fractional full-time and casual staff employed
in Teaching only and Teaching and research functions. Staff employed in independent operations have been excluded.
8 This ratio shows the concentration of professional staff compared to core business academic staff and gives an
indication of the level of support provided to enable academic work of the University. The inclusion of casual staff gives a
complete view of the workforce.
