CONTEXTUALITY TIME, SPACE AND PEOPLE
A city is a place where a small boy, as he walks through it, may see something that will tell him what he wants to do his whole life. - LOUIS I KAHN
1. Introduction / Background
Our conscience is relative and responsive to everything around us - sound, colour, smell, touch... Architecturally, context is a stimulus that invokes a specific response, the ultimate solution, however what is amiss in this equation is that we on our creative pedestals nurture and protect the response so conservatively that we tend to ignore the fact that the nature of the stimulus that caused the response has changed.
As the tag line of the theme suggests, the primary features of Contextuality happen to be time, space and people. Nonetheless, as architects our prime concern is the space while we conveniently disregard the two most important aspects of Architecture.
2. Aims & Expected Results
In this exercise we urge you to study a building/space/place that is dictated predominantly by time and people and has changed the nature of the space since its inception.
Task
A building/space/place that has allowed responsive change in the 21 st century. [May or may not be architect designed.]
The chosen building may be built at any period, but should have undergone significant and progressive transformation in the last 15 20 years, Any public building that reflect the local context when it was conceived and the present context that has influenced the change. The analysis of the chosen project should be conducted with an effort to assimilate the following, which outline the philosophies of Ar. Nari Gandhi o Influence of local climate and culture. o Flow/play of spaces. o Interaction of natural elements with the sense, eg; light and air. o Design as a response to the context, site and connection to the surroundings. o Rejection of conventional ideas and paradigm. o Dialogue between the built and the unbuilt.
NOTE: IT IS NOT NECESSARY THAT THE CHOSEN PROJECT INHERIT THIS ATTRIBUTES, HOWEVER THE PRESENTATION SHOULD REFLECT THE ANALYSIS OF IT.

Study of the nature of the materials-the use, details and the craftsmanship of the same. The building should reflect the transformation undergone. Graphical representation of the same to be done, and study the nature and purpose of the change, and the process of change should be recorded in the presentation. The building identified can be a single building or a group of buildings in the same campus. The presentation panel should depict the understanding of the process of transformation, whether spontaneous or elaborate. The presentation should conclude with the understanding of WHY the change was called for, if the transformation respects the present day context, and how efficiently the given space allowed the transformation. The team and panel should have appropriate references to the inferences of the drawings.
3. Specifications
The presentation panel should have a minimum of 60% of graphical data and the rest may be textual. Presentation should be in landscape only. Panel: One 8 x 4 panel will be provided Presentation: Maximum number of sheets not to exceed 15 A1 This can either be in single panel format or part panel format
Single panel
This mode of presentation requires the entire 8 x 4 panel to be covered which would be considered equivalent to 6 A1 sheets. The remaining 9 A1 sheets may be overlaid on the panel. The Shape and size of the overlays on the single panel shall be left to the discretion of the participants.
Part Panel
This presentation is possible in two forms either covering 2/3rd of the panel or1/3rd A 2/3rd panel would be considered equivalent to 4 A1 sheets, along with which a maximum of 11 A1 sheets in a calendar and / or overlay format is allowed. A 1/3 rd panel would be considered equivalent to 2 A1 sheets, along with which a maximum of 13 A1 sheets in a calendar and / or overlay format is allowed. Each overlay (does not require a logo) would be considered as one A1 sheet irrespective of the size not exceeding A1. (The overlay must be cut from an A1sheet).

No part of the presentation shall spill out the 8 x 4 panel. All individual sheets and panels shall have NASA logo Scale models are not allowed. 2 copies of the CD containing the soft copy of the entire report, sheets along with the A.V.Presentation must be submitted. One of these is for the N.I.P.C. archives and the other for the use of the college in A.V. Presentation. The 2nd CD will be returned to the respective college. College code will be mentioned in both the CDS but one out of the two CDs must also contain name of the college. Jury members shall shortlist the colleges for A.V. presentation. Time given for the short listed entries shall not exceed 15 minutes. No college shall reveal its identity. NASA logo in proper specification should feature on right hand bottom corner. Note: the identity/name of the participating college should not feature in any way on any of the presentation sheets/A.V. Two identical copies of a Report (hard bound) not exceeding 20 A4 pages that give an entire overview of the project should accompany the submission. The report should feature the NASA logo appropriately on the cover page and on each page of the report. Both copies should contain the college code and name of the project on the cover. However, only one copy should have the name of the College featured on it.
