Preamble


THE UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is an institute for post-graduates from the
University of Bayreuth. THE UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is open to doctoral
students of all disciplines and is designed to promote faculty-based doctorates and
doctorates in graduate centers whose doctoral programs at the University of Bayreuth are
focused on innovative research topics which are preferably interdisciplinary.
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL was set up to provide support and services
associated with doctoral studies, and hence to act at the same time as a means of support
for research at the University of Bayreuth. The aim of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH
GRADUATE SCHOOL is to effectively strengthen graduate qualification at the University of
Bayreuth, to intensify the level of international exchange at this early stage of independent
research and to ensure, and further develop, quality standards. The UNIVERSITY OF
BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is geared to the recommendations of the Wissenschaftsrat
and the German Research Foundation (DFG), so that the Bayreuth graduate qualification
meets the requirements, structure and content set out by the highest academic standards.
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL establishes a catalogue of support
measures, the implementation of which is enabled by funding from the University of
Bayreuth.
In terms of general professional skills, the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL
supports the doctoral students by enabling the necessary teaching and training, in close
consultation with the doctoral students. The doctoral students achieve a new institutional
weight and become more visible as a group.
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL supports the implementation of the
Measures to ensure the standards of good scientific practice in the supervision of doctoral
students and the writing of the doctorate as recommended by the University Management
Board (Hochschulleitung) on the 12
th

1.
Legal form
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is a central academic institution of the
University of Bayreuth according to Article 19, paragraph 5 of the BayHSchG (Bavarian
University Law). Its purpose is to support structured academic qualification for graduates
intending to write doctorates and can be measured against the highest international
standards. It is at the same time an instrument for the promotion of research at the University
of Bayreuth.


2.
Objectives and tasks
(1) To promote the research of the doctoral students
The core element of the doctorate at the University of Bayreuth is independent
research carried out by the doctoral students which the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH
GRADUATE SCHOOL supports and encourages with a variety of measures. While the
subject-based qualifications are ensured by the graduate centers and faculties, the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL promotes general skills training for the
graduates. The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL contributes in this way
to the holistic education of young academics and future executives. The UNIVERSITY
OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL also informs and advises doctoral students about
non-subject related issues and funding.


(2) Quality of the graduate qualification
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL supports and promotes graduate
qualification at the University of Bayreuth and contributes to an environment with
optimal conditions for academic research. The aim is to further improve the
attractiveness and quality of doctoral studies at the University of Bayreuth for all
doctoral students. In consultation with the graduate centers and faculties, the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL develops university-wide standards for
postgraduate education. A further goal of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL is to create an environment which enables rapid completion of the doctorate
whilst maintaining high academic standards.

(3) Promotion of international cooperation
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL provides financial assistance to
enable doctoral students to carry out research abroad, to take part in academic
congresses and to involve visiting academics in the doctoral students research
projects. The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL additionally helps to
strengthen international cooperation. The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL provides, together with the Welcome Centre at the University of Bayreuth,
interfaces to the international academic job market.
(4) Support for female academics and families
In cooperation with the womens representatives at the University of Bayreuth the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL helps female doctoral students and also
all doctoral students with children, to manage the twin challenges of family and
doctoral studies.
(5) Doctoral students as a group
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL supports the development of a
common identity for the group of doctoral students and involves them in committees
at the University of Bayreuth.
(6) Marketing
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL raises awareness of the
opportunities for doctoral studies at the University of Bayreuth with targeted marketing
measures. In this way, the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL helps both
nationally and internationally to attract outstanding doctoral students to the University
of Bayreuth.

3.
Target groups
(1) The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is open to all those doctoral
students from:
a. faculties at the University of Bayreuth
b. interdisciplinary Bayreuth Graduate Centers with their range of structured
doctoral programs
Students are also free to carry out their doctoral studies outside the UNIVERSITY OF
BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL.
(2) Each faculty of the University of Bayreuth follows its own doctoral procedure, for
which the dean and the doctoral committee are responsible. The faculties support
their doctoral students according to the respective faculty culture and coordinate the
subject related training. They are responsible for the relevant training program for the
doctoral students, for quality assurance of the individual doctoral procedures and for
organizational issues.
(3) Within or across the faculties, the University of Bayreuth Senate can decide to create
Graduate Centers with structured doctoral programs. They are under the direction of
a Director and include individual doctoral programs. Temporary facilities such as the
DFG Research Training Groups (Graduiertenkollegs), ENB Doctorate Programs
(Internationale Doktorandenkollegs), doctoral study programs or DAAD IPP programs
can be integrated into the Graduate Center as doctoral programs. Doctoral programs
can also be set up in cooperation with other universities or research institutes. Within
the framework of Germanys Excellence Initiative, Graduate Schools (such as the
Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies, BIGSAS) stand as
independent doctoral institutions equivalent to the above-mentioned Graduate
Centers.

4.
Representatives

Representatives of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL are:
(1) the Board,
(2) the Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL, his deputy and
(3) the doctoral student representation

5.
Membership
(1) Membership is open to all doctoral students of the University of Bayreuth, insofar as
they:
a. either have been accepted by a Graduate Center of the University of Bayreuth
b. or meet the eligibility requirements for a doctorate from a faculty and have
received a supervisors commitment to provide mentoring.
Admission into the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is voluntary and on
request.
The application should be accompanied by the supervisors commitment and proof
that the eligibility requirements are met (where necessary with conditions).
Registration is made by the doctoral students.
(2) Membership of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL ends:
a. with the fulfillment of the final requirement necessary for the doctorate according
to the relevant doctoral procedure;
b. for doctoral students whose membership ends in a Graduate Center;
c. by written notice to the Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL;
d. by exclusion due to proven misconduct;
e. in the remaining cases after four years. In exceptional cases, an extension may be
sought.
(3) Doctoral graduates will be offered a place in the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL alumni network.
(4) Members of the board are members of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL.

6.
Rights and duties of members

(1) Members are entitled to use the resources and services provided by the UNIVERSITY
OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL. They can take part in the support program and use
the funding provided by the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL.
(2) Members are committed to [called upon] supporting the objectives and tasks of the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL and to actively support the UNIVERSITY
OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL.
(3) For the purpose of structuring the doctorate, it is recommended that doctoral students
of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL sign a supervision agreement
with their supervisor. The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL will provide
model agreements elaborated by the Board respecting the diversity of the disciplines.
7. Board
(1) The Board of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL comprises:
a. the Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL and his deputy,
b. one representative from each Graduate Center and each faculty (dean or other
representative of the faculty),
c. the University of Bayreuth Vice President for Research and Young Academics,
d. the speaker for the doctoral students and three deputies as well as
e. one of the womens representatives from the University of Bayreuth.

(2) The term of office of the members of the Board in accordance with paragraphs 1 a. to
c. and 1e. shall amount to three years, with paragraph 1 d. to one year. Members may
also be re-elected.

(3) The Board determines the strategic direction of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH
GRADUATE SCHOOL, monitors the implementation of the objectives and initiates the
further development of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL. In addition,
the Board assumes the following tasks:
a. development of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL support
program,
b. development of a qualification framework for doctoral students at the University of
Bayreuth and the creation of model supervision agreements, in consultation with
the University Management Board and the Senate,
c. development and implementation of a concept for the external communication and
marketing of doctoral studies at the University of Bayreuth,
d. report to the University Management Board on the founding, modifications and the
cessation of Graduate Centers and doctoral programs at the University of
Bayreuth,
e. report to the University Management Board on new or modified doctoral
regulations,
f. prepare a budget for the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL,
g. prepare a bi-annual report for the University Management Board and the Senate
on the work and development of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL,
h. proposals for future improvements to the statute of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH
GRADUATE SCHOOL
i. The Board also deals with the future development of the Measures to ensure the
standards of good academic practice in the supervision of doctoral students and
the writing of the doctorate as recommended by the University Management
Board on the 12
th
J uly, 2011.
(4) The Board can decide internally which of its members is responsible for the above-
mentioned tasks. The Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL
continues to have overall responsibility.
(5) The Board shall meet at least twice a year. The meetings are convened by the
Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL or his deputy.
(6) The representatives of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL have a
quorum when after proper notice the majority of the voting members is present. Proxy
votes are not possible.

8.
Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL

(1) The director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is either the
University of Bayreuth Vice President for Research and Young Academics or a
university teacher selected from amongst the active professors. He leads the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL and is Chairman of the Board. He is
reportable to the University Management Board on all subjects related to the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL. The heads of the Graduate Centers
and the Deans are required to provide information to the Director of the UNIVERSITY
OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL in relation to doctoral students and doctorates.
(2) The Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL and his deputy must
be full-time, permanent professors at the University of Bayreuth. They are appointed
by the University Management Board for three years. The heads of the Graduate
Centers and the deans are able to propose a candidate. Re-appointment is possible.
(3) The Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is an advisory
member of the Senate.
(4) The duties of the director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL include:
a. representing the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL internally and
externally, taking into account the overall interests of the university,
b. responsibility to the University Management Board for the proper distribution of
funds and for the observance of the total budget,
c. personnel matters for those employees funded by the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH
GRADUATE SCHOOL,
d. timely approval of applications for funding from the emergency fund, according to
the criteria elaborated by the Board of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL. Decisions must be communicated to the Board,
e. timely approval of applications for funding from the fund for female academics
and families. Decisions must be communicated to the Board of the UNIVERSITY OF
BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL and the university womens representatives,
f. convening board meetings,
g. overall survey of the doctoral students at the University of Bayreuth.

(5) The Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL receives for his
services an allowance which is decided by the President as well as a reduction in the
number of his teaching hours of 2 hours per week.
(6) If the Board cannot be convened in time for a decision, then the decision on board-
related matters is to be made by the Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH
GRADUATE SCHOOL. He must report on the decision at the next meeting.
(7) The Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL can transfer certain
tasks and authority to other members of the board or other full-time employees of the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL. The overall responsibility remains with
the Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL.
(8) The dismissal of the Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is
possible if there are clear grounds. The decision is made by the University
Management Board.
9.
The general assembly of doctoral students of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL

(1) The general assembly of doctoral students of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL is for all doctoral students of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL. The general assembly of doctoral students convenes at least once a year.
(2) The general assembly of doctoral students of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL elects a speaker and three deputies; if possible the different disciplines and
Ph.D. practices should be represented. The speaker for the doctoral students and his
deputies are voting members of the Board of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL. In addition, the speaker of the general assembly of doctoral students is an
advisory member of the Senate of the University of Bayreuth.

10.
Office
(1) The office of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL is headed by
the Manager of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL.
(2) The office is responsible for:
a. supporting the Director and the Board in implementing the objectives and tasks of
the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL,
b. the organizational aspects of the tasks of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL.

11.
Support program

(1) The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL fosters the integration of the
doctoral students of the University of Bayreuth in national and international academic
networks.
In terms of greater international visibility and networking, the UNIVERSITY OF
BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL recommends and subsidizes:
a. presentations (oral or poster) of students own academic results at conferences
with international participants,
b. one or more stays at a research institution or a research-based industrial
company, preferably abroad,
c. joint research at the University of Bayreuth with national and international
academics who are invited at the suggestion of doctoral students.
(2) The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL organizes a number of non subject
related activities for doctoral students. These include:
a. a kick-off seminar, which includes non subject related aspects important for
academic work at the University of Bayreuth, informs about funding sources,
communicates rules of good academic practice, and promotes personal networks
which go beyond the boundaries of the individual subject area,
b. as appropriate and on request from a group of doctoral students, non subject
related seminars e. g. on the following topics:
- personality and self-management,
- cultural competence,
- special courses for female doctoral students and gender competence seminars,
- entrepreneurial behavior,
- events within the framework of the cross-sectional component
Wissenschaftsintegration, -reflektion und -kommunikation.
Participation in the kick-off seminar is mandatory for all doctoral students of the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTHGRADUATE SCHOOL.

12.
Financial support from the University of Bayreuth
(1) The University of Bayreuth provides financial support from central funds according to
their resources. To achieve this, the Board of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL suggests an annual budget which includes all the information and data
relevant for the budget allocation. The University Management Board decides the
budget as part of the overall annual financial planning. The funds are then allocated to
the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL. The funds include individual
support for each member (doctoral student) and a collective allocation.
(2) Individual funding for doctoral students:
The costs for the kick-off seminar according to 11.2a are covered by the UNIVERSITY
OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL. This includes the cost of travel and
accommodation, catering and seminar costs.
Each doctoral student of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL, who
follows the recommendation as detailed in 6.3 receives in addition:
1. a budget. This can be used for:
a. presentations (oral or poster) of their own academic results at a seminar with
largely international participants,
b. one or more stays at a research institute or a research-based industrial
company abroad,
c. joint research work at the University of Bayreuth with international guests who
are invited at the suggestion of the doctoral student;
2. a publication bonus for the first publication where the student is the main author in
a leading scientific journal with a review scheme.
Claims for the individual support are only possible during membership of the
UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL.

(3) The following are funded or subsidized from the collective allocation:
a. The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL rewards ten doctorates
annually. The selection is made by the Board of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH
GRADUATE SCHOOL. It is possible to propose doctoral students of the UNIVERSITY
OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL with an exceptional doctorate, who have
additionally proved their compliance with the recommendation in 6.3. Nominations
may be made by the primary supervisor of the doctorate. The rewards will be
provided by the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL from third-party
funding.
b. the emergency fund for start-up or interim financing for doctoral students for a
period of normally three months. Applications for support can be made by doctoral
students at any time to the Director of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE
SCHOOL;
c. the fund for female academics and families;
d. events for graduate qualification, which can be offered on request from a group of
doctoral students of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL;
e. personnel costs and running costs for the office for the implementation of the
tasks and objectives of the UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL.
13.
Evaluation
The UNIVERSITY OF BAYREUTH GRADUATE SCHOOL will be evaluated every five years on its
effectiveness and efficiency by the presidential commission for research and young
academics.
14. Changes, effect
(1) Additions or amendments to this statute require the approval of the University
Management Board in agreement with the University of Bayreuth Senate, and will be
communicated to the heads of faculties and Graduate Centers.
(2) This statute comes into effect on the day after internal publication in the university.
