Treasures of the storeroom are money and material wealth; things
like land, buildings, and jewelry.
Treasures of the body mean attributes one possesses as a person; things like physical health, education, personal abilities, knowledge, skills, and talents, position and rank at work, and social reputation and honor. Treasures of the heart mean ... In the case of the scenario that we had just now, if you were to choose to leave, you are more likely to withhold the treasure of the body where you did nothing to the situation, sitting on the fence, making no changes to your personal attributes. If you were to choose to continue and carry on with helping your supervisor to fraud, you will be said to have placed priority over the treasures of the storeroom as you place money and wealth more importantly as you dont want to lose this job. Whereas for people who have chosen to whistleblow, you actually uphold the treasure of the heart having the courage, integrity to support what is morally right etc. The Gosho has actually pointed out that the treasure of heart plays the most important role as compared to the other two. In the case of Whistleblowing, you might find it very hard to do it as you might be afraid that your reputation will be at stake or that you might offend your manager etc. However, if you were to have the courage to whistleblow, things might turn out to be better. Your company will be fraud-less and you might be commended for your integrity and bravery by the company. People will actually see you as one with principles and righteousness. At the same time, you get to keep your existing job and earn stable income. All these are actually the treasures of the storeroom and body. Never mind about the problems that may arise. In Buddhism, we always challenge ourselves to stretch our potentials. We always see difficulties as challenges for us to gain greater happiness. Nowadays, people have placed very high emphasis on MONEY, Good academic records, BANKS especially SMU students. Many people often perceive a rich or affluent person as someone who has lots of treasures of the storeroom. And they think that the higher the gpa ( the greater a persons treasures of the body ) the more successful the person is. However, Sensei says that treasure of the storeroom and body is just a tool that we are equipped with to obtain treasure of the heart. Life is not just about money and getting educated. It is about how we can blablabla . Happiness gained in achieving treasures of storeroom and body is only temporal. Lets take for example: If someone wins first prize in a lottery, he might feel that he is the luckiest and happiest person on Earth when he gets that huge sum of money (treasure of the storeroom) in his hands. However, it is impossible to maintain this feeling forever. Obtaining treasure of storeroom and body will only lead us to Short Term happiness and higher expectations resulting in greed and end up in misery should they fail to fulfill their desires. The main point here is not about material gains but having the right heart, right mindset of everything you do. Therefore, its OK if you are currently poor in the treasures of the storeroom and body,(ie. Not rich, not doing well in studies). This is not something to look down on yourself. The people who should be ashamed are those who have little interest in seeking the treasures of the heart (no determination, complacency) and neglect to accumulate them. The reason why we brought up this scenario is to actually give all of us a chance to reflect upon what is the most important aspect of life. Theres no right or wrong answer. But whatever things we do, we should always follow our hearts and not let other external factors affect you like the treasures of body and storeroom they are simply tools for us to accumulate the treasure of heart. So what can we do now? We dont really have to wait till this type of things to happen to accumulate the treasure of heart. It can be accumulated through our daily practicing through chanting Daimoku and do Gongyo with a mind and heart filled with belief in Gohonzon. True worth can only be created and made good use of when the treasures of the storeroom, treasures of the body, and treasures of the heart are all manifested to the fullest.
Why exactly? This actually reflects the threefold world in Buddhism: the world of desire, the world of form, and the world of formlessness. The pursuit of treasures of the storeroom and body belongs to the domain of the world of desire. When desires are fulfilled, the reward of rapture appears. But the rewards of the world of desire are transitory; without exception, we inevitably fall into the three evil paths (greed, anger, and delusion), and continue to wander from one condition to another.
