Unity Day eases school year transitions

On graduation day, students
look around and admire those
classmates who made their high
school years special. Unfortunately, most high school students only
know their entire class during the
four years of high school.
Moorestown Unity Day seeks to
put a stop to this, uniting classes
of students at the end of third
grade rather than at the end of
middle school.
The students begin Unity Day
coming from Baker, Roberts and
South
Valley
elementary
schools, Moorestown Unity Day
Co-Chair Erin Spinello said.
However, by the day's end,
theyre excited to begin their adventure together at the Upper Elementary School, which will continue all the way through their
high school graduation as the
class of 2023. Unity Day is the
start of many great friendships
and memories that they all will
share.
The program is designed to
bring together students from all
three lower elementary schools in
third grade. On June 9, every
third-grade
student
in
Moorestown met at the Community House for a day of activities
and communication.

said. It helps make the students
a whole class.
Students also participated in a
Knowledge Bowl that quizzed
them on Moorestown history and
trivia. Then, it was time for the
fun to begin.
The Community House was
separated into 14 stations, each offering a fun and educational colonial activity for the students.
From rope tosses to top spinning
to bowling, there was certainly a
lot going on.
The activities are similar to
field day, Peacock said. The activities enhance the students understanding of that period in history. They also get the students up
and interacting with each other.
But aside from all the fun the
students had, Unity Day is

supposed
to
serve
as
a
platform for the future success of
each Moorestown graduating
class.
In the majority of public
school systems, students are
never given the chance to meet
their classmates who attend other
elementary schools.
All of the third graders will be
entering the same new school in
September, and by coming together and getting to know each other,
even for just a day, they will have
an easier transition, Spinello
said.
Unity Day will not only make
the transition into UES easier, but
it will also help the students move
into the middle school and into
high school as well, according to
Spinello.

The label high school student
came with a lot of restrictions on your
freedom, but it also gave you a get-outof-jail-free card, or cards. Once graduation is over, that label goes away. All
freedoms given to an American adult
will be yours.
But so, too, will all the consequences
of your actions. The decisions you
make from as serious as do I study
for this test? to should I eat another
burrito? will all have results that
will affect your life. Its a lot of responsibility. Its a good thing, for sure, but
it can also be a scary thing, becoming
an adult.
So, again, while you still have the
option, live life as a kid one last
time. Savor these last few days of high
school. And be confident that you will
do just fine.

Budget approved with no tax increase

The Moorestown Council approved the
2014 budget at its June 9 meeting, and residents will be happy to know that the budget does not come with a tax increase.
I am very pleased we were able to approve the budget without raising taxes,
council member Victoria Napolitano said.
In speaking with the public, that seemed
to be the most important thing for them.
The $23.6 million budget includes about
$16 million that will be raised by taxation.
This means a Moorestown resident will
pay about $1,800 annually in municipal

taxes for a home assessed at $445,300.
The 2014 budget is the result of a lot of
hard work, according to Napolitano.
We have tossed around a lot of ideas in
this past year to make this budget work
without having to raise taxes, Napolitano
said. Some of the ideas worked and some
did not, but the end result was exactly what
we wanted.
One of those ideas was the privatization
of trash services. Napolitano said this was
the most impactful idea the council came
up with during the past year. While it wasnt the only idea that helped the council
create a budget that did not require a tax

increase, it had a huge impact.
The trash privatization is the kind of
idea that can have a profound impact on a
community, Napolitano said. Its important to keep the citizens in mind when
were planning a budget, and this idea was
the one we thought would help them the
most.
And while the 2014 budget has been approved, Napolitano sees that it is time to
start thinking about next year already.

The following information was
provided by the Moorestown Police Department.
On June 1, a 32-year old woman
of Hamilton Road, Maple Shade,
concealed two Izod shirts in her
handbag and exited Boscovs Department
Store
in
the
Moorestown Mall without paying
the total value of $85. She was arrested and charged with shoplifting. She was released on a summons.
On June 1, a 25-year old
man
of
Emerson
Drive,
Maple Shade, was issued a
special summons for obstruction
after giving false identification
information during a vehicle
check.
On June 1, warrants were issued to a 23-year old man of
Somers Avenue, Moorestown,
charging him with harassment,
criminal trespass and violation of
a restraining order due to a domestic situation.
On June 1, a 31-year old man of

Laurence Drive, Browns Mills,
was arrested and charged with
robbery, shoplifting, possession
CDS heroin and possession of syringes. The man stole clothing
from Boscovs in the Moorestown
Mall and concealed it in a shopping bag. Total value of the theft
was $267.95. In the course of the
shoplifting, he pulled out a syringe on store security. He was
also in possession of CDS suspected heroin. Bail was set at
$25,000 full cash or bond, and he
was committed to the Burlington
County Jail.
On June 5, Master Cuts in the
Moorestown Mall reported an employee theft.
A 42-year old woman of
Harned Avenue, Somerdale, was
arrested and charged with theft.
The woman was stealing hair
products and re-selling them at
the Berlin Farm Market. Total
value of the theft was approximately $5,000. She was released
on a summons.
