Service providers must meet growing bandwidth demands, deliver services in a timely manner, build a network that satises the markets changing requirements and keep overhead costs to a minimum. To help overcome those challenges, we developed the Alcatel 1631 LMC. One of the industrys most innovative cross- connects, the LMC is engineered with both wideband and broadband functionality built into the same matrix. A highly exible product, the LMC terminates, interconnects, and monitors both asynchronous and SONET signals. The LMC manages leased line services (at the T1 level), and delivers ADSL, DSL, ATM, ISDN, Frame Relay, and packet services over SONET rings. By allowing multiple access rings to integrate with the metro hub, the LMC provides a cost-effective way to manage the transport of voice, data, video, and IP trafc on one network. Alcatels exclusive FlexPoint TM card supports both DS-3 and STS-1, simplifying network planning and migration. Finally, to ensure the LMC meets both current and future needs, it enables seamless, in-service network growth quickly and cost-effectively, from one DS-3/STS-1 port to 3,360 DS-3/STS-1 equivalent ports. Managing a protable network will always be a challenge for service providers. With Alcatel as your partner, it doesnt have to be an impossible task. Look to Alcatel for all your network telecommunications needs. We have end-to-end carrier class solutions for use on land, undersea, and around the globe. While all of this equipment is intended to help networks run as efciently and cost-effectively as possible, it has done just the opposite. Large quantities of equipment increase costs and decrease reliability and efciency. The LMC combines the operations of ber optic transmission (FOT) systems, ADMs and M13s, making an efcient, reliable, and compact network solution. Also, its industry leading Universal I/O Bay supports STS-1, DS-3, OC-3, and OC-12 functions, thereby simplifying cabling, lowering maintenance costs, and reducing oor space requirements. The LMC provides the DS-1/VT1.5 grooming and cross-connect technology needed to effectively manage network interconnections. This technology enables the LMC to ll pipes to capacity, groom from DS-1 to STS-3c, and maximize network capacity. That is why the LMC is designed with superior growth expansion capabilities that enable increases from 1 DS-3/STS-1 port to 3,360 DS-3/STS-1 equivalent ports seamlessly and without service interruption. The LMC has a VT1.5 level matrix that supports up to 3,360 DS-3/STS-1 equivalent ports. The smallest LMC starter conguration, the 240 Core, supports up to 240 DS-3/STS-1 ports, requires three I/O bays, and only one administration bay and one matrix bay. The LMCs capacity upgrades are straightforward and cost-effective, simply add matrix bays. These upgrades require no additional center stage or administration bays. This is a major advantage of the LMC over other digital cross-connects. It saves both money and oor space by eliminating unnecessary bays. Also, the LMC can be upgraded while in-service without affecting trafc. It has a growth-friendly architecture that reuses 100%of its modules, thereby protecting initial equipment investments. With its unique expansion capabilities, the LMC is the right choice - from an end ofce to a major hub. 4 End Stage/ Center Stage 240 Port Capacity Matrix Center Stage End Stage 672 Port Capacity Matrix Center Stage End Stage End Stage End Stage End Stage 2688 Port Capacity Matrix End Stage Center Stage End Stage End Stage End Stage End Stage 3360 Port Capacity Matrix Center Stage End Stage End Stage 1344 Port Capacity Matrix 5 Provides Superior Carrier Class Unlimited OC-N Ring Support The LMC is a forward-looking, exible solution that enables effective management of your network evolution. It is an ideal hub for multiple access rings, provides innovative ring management solutions, and has a robust network protection architecture. The LMC can operate as a node on over 1120 SONET OC-3 protected rings and provides the matrix capability to fully interconnect the rings. It also provides SONET and asynchronous trafc management capabilities, upgradeable optical rates from OC-3 to OC-12, and the capacity to cross-connect embedded DS-1s into higher rate facilities. Designed with distributed processing architecture that contains a DCC rewall and isolates system operation during a network failure or data storm condition. The LMC combines optical interfaces with both intraofce and interofce capabilities and a SONET VT1.5 level matrix for complete interconnection functions. This allows operators with multiple rings to interconnect facilities without leaving the ofce. It can interconnect services to voice or data switches in the ofce, making it easy to integrate new network elements into existing ofce architectures such as DSLAMs, soft switches, and IP routers. With an advanced architecture for DCC routing and processing, the LMC supports as many OC-3 or OC-12 UPSR rings as the matrix capacity allows. It has a matrix capacity of 3,360 DS-3/STS-1 equivalent ports, the highest ring capacity on the market today! Versatile Universal I/ O Bay and FlexPoint TM Card The LMC Universal I/O Bay offers a exible single-shelf solution. This bay supports STS-1, DS-3, OC-3, STS-3c and OC-12 terminations. The Universal I/O Bay is equipped with two SI-48 shelves. Each shelf supports 48 STS-1, 48 DS-3, 16 OC-3, or 4 OC-12 interfaces. To ensure maximum bandwidth availability, the STS-1s and DS-3s are protected on a 1:8 basis and the OC-3s and OC-12s are protected on a 1+1 basis. The FlexPoint TM card, housed in the Universal I/O Bay, enables management of the asynchronous DS-1/VT1.5 and DS-3/STS-1 leased line services. It takes the provisioning, performance monitoring, and alarm capabilities of a standard SONET interface and extends them to the embedded asynchronous DS-1 and DS-3 levels. Finally, the FlexPoint card provides a exible deployment strategy between traditional asynchronous facilities and SONET facilities. It terminates either as an asynchronous DS-3 or a SONET STS-1, based solely on the facility type provisioned for the card. The Universal I/O Bay supports 100% reuse of all common equipment. Equipment reuse provides commonality for applications of both electrical and optical shelves, minimizes sparing investments, and enhances application exibility. The design of the Universal I/O Bay ensures that it is easy to plan for growth. The bays common equipment accommodates all interface types. It reduces training and operating costs because no changes are required to the shelves based on the interfaces housed in the shelf. Its versatility enables a whole new stream of revenue. Service providers can install bays as they are needed without forecasting specic service types. Therefore, equipment can be deployed on a risk-free basis and adapt to service requirements as they develop. Universal I/ O Bay SIO Shelf 2 SIO Shelf 1 C u s t o m e r I n t e r f a c e P a n e l

That is why the LMC is recognized for having the fewest hardware-related FCC reportable outages of any distributed communications system. Every card in the LMC operates under the security of protection. The LMC protects its optical I/O, processor, matrix interface, and communication cards on a 1+1 basis and its DS-3/STS-1 cards on a 1:8 basis. Also, since cards are dependent on each other, cards are protected on a group basis. This group protection enables a shelf to continue critical operations independently of the central control system if necessary. Although each shelf is subservient to the central control system, it is not reliant on the central control system. For example, should a central control failure occur, a shelf would be able to continue to carry trafc, collect performance-monitoring information, and perform protection switching. Provides Extensive Remote Provisioning and Network Monitoring Capabilities In todays market, time is of the essence. That is why the LMC has embedded extensive OAM&P (Operation, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning) capabilities. With remote provisioning and performance monitoring, remote software upgrades, and remote database backup/restore, technicians are no longer required to travel to a site for upgrades and information retrieval. These capabilities enable you to remotely manage your network quickly and efciently. The LMCs remote provisioning capabilities and facility summary command saves time and money by minimizing the time required to turn up services. It is no longer necessary to send a technician to a location to manually turn up a service. The technician can provision connections and facilities remotely via RS-232, X.25 and 802.3 LAN interfaces. The facility summary command allows users to quickly determine system capacity. We designed the LMCs network monitoring capabilities with convenience and cost savings in mind. Service providers can monitor the entire network from one centralized location. Using the extended superframe facility data link feature, data on far-end performance can be retrieved and reported. This feature also measures the grade-of-service provided by hi-cap services. The LMC supports both ANSI TI.403 and AT&T 54016 far-end performance monitoring standards and provides full-time performance monitoring data on every provisioned port and embedded signal in the network. The LMC provides considerable cost savings because it eliminates the need for stand-alone line monitoring units and other equipment required for facility service level or last mile signal performance monitoring. All necessary performance-monitoring capabilities are embedded within the LMC. These performance monitoring capabilities act as a report card for all of your connections. By troubleshooting network performance in advance, the LMC allows service providers to resolve problems quickly and ensure customer service level agreements are met with condence. 7 Equipment and Facility Control The LMCs FlashCut TM feature helps service providers replace legacy or unreliable equipment. Staff can cutover circuits on a near-instantaneous basis and make the cut around existing equipment. With FlashCut, an entire circuit cutover can be completed in less than two seconds, regardless of the number of ports involved. The cut occurs so quickly, less than 50ms, the network does not even register that an event occurred. This is especially important when circuit cutovers involve critical trafc such as 911 emergency circuits. FlashCut also increases the condence in cutovers by allowing the new cabling and connection maps to be tested before trafc is switched over. And if necessary, the cutover is easily reversed to restore the original path. FlashCut is a feature that proves the LMC provides solutions for real-world situations. The LMC adds value to facility planning by allowing I/O bays to be located up to 500m from the matrix. Therefore, all facility types can be optically remoted from the matrix to this distance. This unparalleled exibility allows unfettered system growth even in the most congested of ofces. With its customers network alarm functionality, the LMC can sectionalize and isolate failures between the service providers network and the customer installation (CI) side of the network interface - in real time. Therefore, service providers are proactively notied and can determine whether AIS and RAI alarms are a result of the customers equipment failing or a failure within the providers network. With ANSI T1.403-1999 standardized signals (AIS-CI, RAI-CI), network service providers can eliminate unnecessary and expensive dispatches and troubleshooting on customer installation related problems.
