Design Benefits

Standard polymer seat(SO2)

Fire-tested seat (FO2)

Metal-to-metal seat (MO1) to 750F, (MO3) to 1000F

Drop-Tight Sealing to 1480 psi

The standard polymer seat is bi-directional with an
extended pressure responsive sealing lip. Patented
fire-tested, bi-directional metallic seats provide a metal-tometal pressure responsive seal. Valves constructed of 316
stainless steel and assembled with the proper trims and
Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS No. 6625) seats (M03) are capable of
handling temperatures to 1000F (see page 17 for further
details).
Patented Fire-Tested Bi-Directional Seal
Properly fitted with metallic seats and high temperature
seals, DynaCentric valves have demonstrated they are
capable of providing fire-test performance in accordance
with API 607. This unique design provides fire-test
capabilities regardless of flow direction.
Complete Selection of Seat-Seal Trims
Standard seat-seal trims are available to cover a wide
range of valve applications. A brief summary and
applications guide appears on page 17. The material
selection guide on pages 29-32 lists suggested
DynaCentric seat-seal trims for several hundred ladings.

Design Benefits
Disc Design Reduces Seat Wear
Rugged valve disc is precision machined from carbon steel
or alloy steels. This design allows for gradual engagement
into seat to prevent pinching or cutting. Eccentric positioning of stem allows disc to swing free of seat in open
position, reducing operating torque and wear. Special
surface coatings such as stellite overlay are available for
critical or severe service conditions.
Heavy Duty Seat Retainers
Extra thick seat retainers are designed to minimize
deflection and provide safe, end-of-line sealing up to the
full pressure rating of the valve in lug body configurations. Seat retainer capscrews are outboard of the lading
to prevent corrosion and positioned so that they do not
interfere with flange gasket seals, including API 601
standard spiral wound gaskets. An additional body joint
gasket on metal seated valves between seat retainer and
body assures zero leakage. Absolute containment of the
lading is assured under the most adverse conditions of
shock, vibration or line stress.
Positively Retained Stem
The W-K-M retained stem design is tamper proof and not
only meets but exceeds the requirements of ANSI B16.34.
The disc, disc pins and stem design meet ASME requirements for maximum torsional and bending stress.
Additional blowout prevention is provided should stem or
disc pin failure occur.

Design Benefits
Engineered for Excellence
W-K-M products have long been recognized for their high
quality, high technology products for severe applications.
The superior performance of DynaCentric valves is the
result of meticulous design and engineering effort,
backed by thorough testing and evaluation.
Quality Control and Testing
All DynaCentric valves undergo rigorous performance
testing and quality evaluations before leaving our plant.
Hydrostatic pressure tests are performed on the body at
150% of working pressures. The seat of each valve is
tested to 110% of working pressure. Final visual inspections are made by experienced quality control technicians.
Minimum Maintenance
In most services, DynaCentric valves provide years of
trouble-free performance with minimum care and
maintenance. In some especially severe services, it may be
necessary to replace the seats occasionally. This can be
done with simple tools in a matter of minutes.

Applications
DynaCentric valves are designed to handle a broad
range of applications in water, oil, steam, gas and slurry
service. The following represent a few of the major
industries where these valves have found success:
Chemical and Petrochemical Processing
Hundreds of applications exist in these plants, including
various process lines, refrigeration and ventilating
systems, heat exchangers, fluid catalysts, water lines,
fertilizer and insecticide lines, and rotary intake/discharge service.
Utilities
From the regulation of gas and steam, to the intake
and exhaust lines on engines, boilers and compressors,
DynaCentric valves are the logical choice for numerous
control jobs vital to utility operations. Ash water lines,
firefighting water lines and waste treatment systems
also show a preference for these types of valves.
Pulp and Paper
DynaCentric valves can be trimmed to handle ammonia,
caustic soda, nitric spent acid and numerous other
chemical ladings associated with this industry. These
valves perform well in pulp lines, steam lines, vacuum
piping and hot tall oil lines.

Applications
Oil and Gas Production
Like all W-K-M valves, DynaCentric valves have a
reputation for being oilfield tough. They are a popular
choice for product gathering lines, tank batteries, WAG
operations, pipelines, air lines, sulfur recovery units, LACT
units and manifold systems.
Gas Transmission and Distribution
High performance DynaCentric valves offer outstanding
performance in numerous locations around the world
in flowlines conveying natural gas and its liquid byproducts from the well production site to gas processing
facilities and, eventually, the consumer. Loading and
unloading operations, storage areas and pump station
operations rely on these products for dependable, longlasting service.
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
DynaCentric valves possess the tight-sealing characteristics needed for service in this industry. They find
application in ventilating systems, cooling towers and
condensor systems, and are capable of handling freon,
ammonia, hot water and chilled water.
Shipbuilding
Marine applications for the DynaCentric valve are also
numerous. Its small size and easy operation make it ideal
for ballast-bilge systems, sea water distilling systems,
cargo and fuel lines, refrigeration systems, manifolds and
discharge and blower lines.

Special Service
High Temperature
DynaCentric valves for high temperature service are equipped with a modified 316
stainless steel seat and insert (MO1), and 316 stainless steel stem bushings with high
temperature seals. This seat/seal combination is rated up to 750F in carbon steel
bodies. Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS No. 6625) seats (MO3) and stainless steel bodies can be
utilized up to 1000F. Leakage rates for metal seated valves are within the service
limits of API 598 and ANSI/FCI 70-2 Class V (See pg. 17 for details). DynaCentric valves
furnished with this seat perform well in steam, hot oil and heat transfer fluids. Valves
for higher temperatures can also be provided on request.
Vacuum Service
The drop-tight sealing capabilities of DynaCentric valves make them an excellent
selection for vacuum service. S01, S02, and F02 seat-seal codes are suitable for
vacuum service to 20 microns absolute. Inverted packing or purged stuffing box
configuration is available on request.
Sour Oil and Gas Service
DynaCentric valves with sour gas trims are available for H2S service in accordance with
NACE MR-01-75, latest issue. (For recommendations on specific material codes for
sour oil and gas service, please reference Bulletin HS.)
Low Temperature Service
DynaCentric valves for temperatures to -50F are available in both 316 stainless steel
construction and low temperature carbon steel. Low temperature seat/seal code
recommendations appear on page 17.
Oxygen Service
DynaCentric valves provide the positive shut-off and tight sealing necessary for
gaseous oxygen service. Due to the risk of explosion and fire inherent in such service,
positive grounding for the disc and stem with the Belleville disc springs are offered.
Positive safeguards have been established in order to conform to the requirement that
valves for oxygen service must be completely free of oil, grease, combustible material,
slag, metal shavings, paint, rust or various fibers. All parts are cleaned in solvent,
washed in hot soapy water, thoroughly dried and carefully inspected for contamination. After assembly and testing, each valve is individually tagged and sealed in a
polyethylene bag. Valves for such service may be supplied in any materials, but the
company recommends 316 stainless steel or Ni-Cu Alloy (UNS No. 5500).
Steam Service
DynaCentric valves are ideally suited for applications in service steam. Reinforced TFE
seats (SO2) with high temperature packing will handle steam to 100 psig saturation
pressure. When fitted with 316 stainless steel seats with reinforced TFE inserts (FO2),
the DynaCentric valve is suitable for steam to 250 psig saturation pressures. The
combination of rotary operation, streamlined flow and positive shut-off can result in
years of maintenance-free service without the seizures on cool-down, flashing or stem
leakage associated with conventional gate or globe valves.

entity, CV is defined as the number of gallons per minute of

water at standard conditions (60F and 14.7 psia) which will
flow through a given flow restriction with a pressure drop of
1 psi. Once determined, the CV of a valve provides a capacity
index by which one is able to readily estimate the required
size of a flow restriction for controlling the fluid flow of any
system.

2.1 CV P (P1 + P2)

(1 + 0.0007 TS )

These formulas are generally

accurate for gas flows where
P .1 P1.
For P > .1 P1, consult factory
for assistance in sizing.

Cavitation
DynaCentric valves, because of their inherently high flow
capacities, have a greater tendency to cavitate at high pressure drops. Cavitation occurs in liquids if the static pressure of
the flowing liquid decreases to a value less than the fluid
under pressure. This phenomenon can create accelerated
wear and deterioration of valves and piping as well as annoying noise and vibration problems. To avoid cavitation in piping, the following formula should be employed:
Pmax= 0.33 (P1 PV).
This formula can also be safely used where reducers are
employed.
Reducers
When valves are mounted between pipe reducers, a loss in
valve capacity occurs with an additional pressure drop across
the system due to contractions and sudden enlargements.
This arrangement is often employed with DynaCentric valves
18

where the desired CV for the control valve results in a valve

size that is smaller than the line size.
Use the following equation to obtain the corrected flow coefficients for the DynaCentric valve when installed in
combination with reducers.

Flow Characteristics (CV)

Typical Characteristic Curve

The practical control range of this type of valve occurs

where continuous throttling can be effected without significant loss of accuracy or decrease in valve life.
The usable rangeability for DynaCentric valves is between
20 and 70 opening, resulting in a ratio of 10:1. In sizing
the DynaCentric valve for throttling applications, a full
open CV should be selected that is approximately 1.8
times the CV determined from calculations. Under normal
flow conditions, this selection will provide a valve opening of 50-60.
CV values equal the flow of water in U.S. gallons per
minute per 1 psi pressure drop.

Ratings shown above are maximum working pressure ratings for the valve body at various temperatures. All pressures are psig. Practical pressure limitations according to
actual service conditions are determined by the seat ratings shown on page 17.

Valves with 17-4 PH stems are only recommended up to a

maximum temperature of 750F. Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS No.
6625) stems are required for temperatures above 750.

These valve body ratings are based on the following

material specifications: CS-ASTM A516 Grade 70 and
A216 Grade WCC (NOTE: Carbon steel listed is not recommended for prolonged usage above 800F) 316 S.S.ASTM A351 Grade CF8M.

22

NOTE: Cold working pressures for the DynaCentric valves

equipped with 316 S.S. stems will be derated. See table
above . Ni-Cr Alloy (UNS No.6625 ) or Ni-Cu Alloy (UNS
No.5500) stems can be furnished for applications requiring high corrosion resistance and full ANSI ratings.

Materials Selection Guide

A selection of body, disc, stem and seat/seal materials for
DynaCentric valves are available. The following list is
intended as a guide in the selection of materials for corrosive service. No material can be expected to resist the corrosive action of all the many ladings found in modern
industry, Experience has shown, however, that certain
materials can perform satisfactorily within certain limits.
The physical properties of a material are affected differently by each corrosive medium. Therefore, it sometimes
becomes necessary to sacrifice value in another property.
As a result, the user must decide which property is of
prime importance for his application.

Internal moving parts, in contact with the lading, should

always carry an A rating. Body materials with exposure
to corrosive ladings can sometimes carry a B rating
because metal loss due to corrosion is not as critical.
The following information is designed for use by technically-qualified individuals at their own discretion and risk.
We strongly recommend that tests be run under actual
operating conditions to obtain a materials performance
ability in any one corrosive medium.
Rating interpretation: A-excellent;Bgood (Slightly
attacked);Cfair (moderately attacked, probably
unsuitable);Dnot recommended.

Automated Valves
Automated DynaCentric valves are an excellent choice for
applications requiring remote control operation. Bettis
pneumatic and hydraulic actuators are provided as standard equipment on automated versions of this valve.
Numerous accessories are available as noted on page 36.
All combinations from simple open-closed operations to
totally automated systems with variable position control
and continuous readout are available. They are an

efficient and cost-effective choice because we provide

single source procurement and single source responsibility
for performance. All DynaCentric valves are made with
the necessary mounting provisions to accommodate Bettis
actuators. Automation is simple and economical with
DynaCentric valves and Bettis actuators, manufactured for
the company by Bettis.
Bettis RP-Series
The RP-Series actuator, available in both double-acting
and spring-return models, is ideally suited for operation of
W-K-M DynaCentric butterfly valves.
Features include self-contained spring modules that
allow safe and easy conversion from double-acting to
spring-return or to a different configuration, position
stops (integral) that allow up to 5 degrees field adjustment beyond 90 degrees, and stainless steel hardware.
Standard operating pressures are 40 to 120 PSIG
and standard operating temperatures range from -40
to +180.
Bettis CB-Series
These gas- or air-driven cylinder-type actuators have
scotch-yoke mechanisms and a center bar construction
which can provide years of service in the most demanding
applications. Standard units are available in a range of
sizes and both double-acting and spring- return models.
Optional features include fail-safe operation, a positionindicating switch and a variety of trims (all-ferrous
construction seals for high or low temperatures, stainless
steel hardware for caustic atmosphere and no-copper or
no-yellow metals).
Bettis HD and T-Series
These are superior cylinder-type units designed specifically for
the higher torque requirements of high pressure DynaCentric
valves. Double-acting and spring-return pneumatic versions
and hydraulic versions are available. Spring- return models are
equipped with a service safe cartridge which permits safe
disassembly and service of the unit in the field.

Automated Valves
Electric Actuators
A full line of heavy duty electro-mechanical rotary actuators can
be supplied with DynaCentric Valves. These completely self-contained units are available in torque ratings of 100 to 10,000 lb./in.
The motor is fitted with thermal overload protection and gear
trains are permanently lubricated, utilizing ball and needle bearings for long life.
EMR units may be mounted to 14 turn valves installed in any position. Two single pole, double-throw, fully adjustable mechanical
limit switches control rotation. The actuators employ a visual
mechanical indicator showing the output shaft position. Optional
feedback potentiometer provides proportional control or remote
shaft position readout devices, All are also equipped with simple
manual operation capability.
Housings meet NEMA 4 (watertight) requirements. Explosion-proof models
meet NEMA 7 requirements for use in hazardous locations; Class 1, Groups
C & D, Division 1 and CSA Standards for enclosures 4&7.
Voltages: 110/120V 10%, 50/60/Hz, 220/240V 10%, 50/60Hz Single Phase.
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE RANGE: -40F (-40C) to + 150F (66C)

Electro-Hydraulic Actuators
Only an electric power source is needed to operate these powerful, exceptionally efficient actuators. They employ a self-contained
hydraulic power system coupled with a failsafe return spring. Even
in remote locations they can be completely independent.
Because these actuators do not depend in spring load for position,
and position does not vary with load changes, they offer a firm
system action and an inherent failsafe capability.
These lightweight, compact units can be ordered for either two
position operation or proportional operation. The proportional
units provide both continuous operation and positioning accuracy
within 1 of the desired rotational position.
VOLTAGES: 110/120V 10%, 50/60Hz, 220/240V 10%, 50/60Hz Single Phase.
AMBIENT TEMPERATURE RANGE: Two Position -40F (-40C)to +150F (66C)
Modulation, 0F (-17.8C) to 140F (60C)
ENCLOSURE: Standard NEMA 4 (watertight). Optional NEMA 7 (Explosion-proof)
CL 1, GR C & D, Division 1.

Diaphragm Rotary Actuators

Series R Diaphragm Actuators are available for precise pneumatic
control or emergency shut down operation. Diaphragm Topworks
are of steel construction and rated to 50psi maximum case pressure. The Rack and Pinion case is of rugged, Ductile Iron with Steel
rack and Ductile Iron Pinion gear. Adjustable backlash control
results in positive drive with low hysteresis. Open and close stops
are field adjustable. Diaphragm units can be furnished in springclosed or spring-open models and are field- reversible.
