Installing Windows Vista

This document provides general information that you should know before installing Microsoft Windows Vista.
Installation instructions
These are instructions for:
!pgrading Windows when you already have a version of Windows on your computer and you want to keep
your files" settings" and programs.
#nstalling a new version of Windows when:
o $ou want to replace your current operating system.
o $ou have an operating system installed on your computer and you want to install Windows on an
available" separate partition of your hard disk.
o $ou have a computer with no operating system installed.
Before you upgrade or install Windows:
%heck the Windows package to make sure your computer meets the system re&uirements.
'ave your Windows Vista installation disc (%) or )V)* ready.
)ecide whether to install a +,-bit or ./-bit edition of Windows Vista. 0or more information" go to
windowsvista.com1./-bit.
0ind your ,2-character Windows product key on your computer or on the installation disc holder inside the
Windows package.
!pdate your antivirus program (if needed*" run it" and then disable it. 3fter you install Windows" remember
to enable the antivirus program" or install new antivirus software that works with Windows Vista.
Write down the name of your computer if you will be connected to a network. #f you4re running Windows
56" here4s how to find your computer4s name: %lick Start" right-click Computer" and then click
Properties. $our computer7s name is displayed on the Computer Name tab.
%onnect to the #nternet. Make sure your #nternet connection is working so you can get the latest installation
updates. #f you don4t have an #nternet connection" you can still upgrade or install Windows.
8ead 9What you should know before installing Windows Vista: located near the end of this document.
Important ;efore installing Windows" be sure to disable all antivirus software and back up your files to an
e<ternal hard disk" )V) or %)" !=; flash drive" or network folder.
To upgrade to Windows Vista
%hoose to upgrade if you want to keep your files" settings" and programs and your current version of Windows can
be upgraded. #f your version of Windows cannot be upgraded" you7ll need to install a new" or 9clean": copy of
Windows (see below*.
Notes
Windows Vista does not support =erial >ey devices. #f you are upgrading and you currently use =erial >eys
with an alternative input device" you must turn off =erial >eys and install another input option before the
upgrade. To turn off =erial >eys in Windows 56" open Accessibility ptions in Control Panel. ?n the
!eneral tab" under Serial "ey de#ices" clear the $se Serial "eys check bo<. 0or more information" go to
the Microsoft 3ccessibility website (www.microsoft.com1enable*.
$ou cannot start" or 9boot": your computer from the Windows Vista upgrade disc.
1 #nsert the Windows installation disc into your computer7s )V) or %) drive.
2 To see if your computer can run Windows Vista" open Windows Vista !pgrade 3dvisor by clicking 9%heck
compatibility online.: (This step is optional.*
3 ?n the Install Windows page" click Install now.

4 ?n the !et important updates for installation page" we recommend getting the latest updates to help
ensure a successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats. $ou will need an
#nternet connection to get these updates.
5 ?n the Type your product %ey for acti#ation page" we strongly suggest that you type your ,2-character
product key to help avoid problems during activation.
6 ?n the Please read t&e license terms page" if you accept the license terms" click I accept t&e license
terms.
7 ?n the W&ic& type of installation do you want' page" click $pgrade.
8 %ontinue to follow the instructions.
To install a new( or )clean(* copy of Windows Vista
When you install a new" or 9clean": copy of Windows" your e<isting version of Windows" including all of your files"
settings" and programs" is automatically replaced. $ou can back up your files and settings" but you must manually
reinstall your programs when the installation is done.
#nstall a new or 9clean": copy of Windows if:
$our current operating system cannot be upgraded to Windows Vista.
$our computer has no operating system installed.
$ou don4t want to keep your e<isting files" settings" and programs.
$ou want to partition your hard disk and install Windows Vista on a specific partition.
1. Turn on your computer" insert the Windows installation disc into your computer7s )V) or %) drive" and then
do one of the following:
#f your computer already has an operating system installed and you don7t want to create" e<tend" delete" or
format partitions" go to step ,.
#f your computer has no operating system installed" or if you want to create" e<tend" delete" or format
partitions" you need to restart your computer while the installation disc is inserted in the )V) or %) drive.
$our computer will then start from the installation disc. #f you are asked to press a key to start from )V)
or %)" press any key. #f the Install Windows page is displayed" go to step ,.
#f the #nstall Windows page is not displayed and you7re not asked to press a key to start from )V) or %)"
you might have to specify that your computer use its )V) or %) drive as the startup device. This means
that you need to set the )V) or %) drive to be the first startup device in the basic input1output system
(;#?=*. 'ere7s how to do that:
a. Turn on your computer" insert the Windows installation disc" and then restart your computer.
b. @ewer computers usually display a startup or Aboot: menu. ?n the startup menu" select A;#?= setup"A
or A;#?= settings"A or something similar" and then press the appropriate key when prompted to display
the ;#?= setup screen.
Warning !pdating the ;#?= is an advanced procedure" and if an error occurs" your computer could
stop working. ;e sure to follow the manufacturer4s instructions e<actly.
Note 6rocedures for updating the ;#?= vary depending on the manufacturer. %heck the information
that came with your computer or go to the manufacturer4s website.
c. ?n the ;#?= setup screen" select the option called 9;oot order": or something similar.
d. =elect your )V) or %) drive as the first startup device.
e. 8estart your computer" and then start Windows from the installation )V) or %) as previously
described.
2. To see if your computer can run Windows Vista" open Windows Vista !pgrade 3dvisor by clicking 9%heck
compatibility online.: (This step is optional.*
3. ?n the Install Windows page" follow any instructions that appear" and then click Install now.

4. ?n the !et important updates for installation page" we recommend getting the latest updates to help ensure a
successful installation and to help protect your computer against security threats. $ou will need an #nternet
connection to get these updates.
Note This page will not appear if you start Windows from the installation disc.
5. ?n the Type your product %ey for acti#ation page" we strongly suggest that you type your ,2-character
product key to help avoid problems during activation.
6. ?n the Please read t&e license terms page" if you accept the license terms" click I accept t&e license terms.
7. ?n the W&ic& type of installation do you want' page" click Custom.
8. ?n the W&ere do you want to install Windows' page" do one of the following:
#f you don7t want to install Windows on a specific partition or create partitions on your hard disk" click
Ne+t to begin the installation.
#f you want to install Windows on a specific partition and have an e<isting partition with enough free space"
select the partition you want to use" and then click Ne+t to begin the installation. (#f you do this" be sure to
install Windows on a different partition from the one where your current version of Windows is installed.*
#f you want to create" e<tend" delete" or format a partition" and you started Windows from the installation
disc" click ,ri#e options -ad#anced." click the option you want" and then follow the instructions.
#f you want to create" e<tend" delete" or format a partition" and you did not start Windows from the
installation disc" follow the instructions in the second option of step B above" and then follow the
instructions.
9. %ontinue to follow the instructions.
Important ;e sure to enable e<isting" or install new" antivirus software after the installation is complete.
What you should know before installing Windows Vista
This section lists the issues that you should know about before you install Windows Vista. 0or information about all
other known issues" read the release notes online (http:11go.microsoft.com1fwlink1CDink#)E..2F.*.
Windows Tas% Sc&eduler tas%s do not function w&en upgrading
This issue applies to you if you are upgrading to Windows Vista from a computer running Windows 56 or the 8%B
version of Windows Vista and you use Windows Task =cheduler.
#f you have changed your computer name" user name" domain" or password" any tasks that you have specified in
Windows Task =cheduler will not function properly after you upgrade to Windows Vista. To avoid this problem"
before you upgrade" use Task =cheduler to update the tasks with the information" or credentials" you changed. To
update a task with this information" use one of the following procedures:
Windows 56: %lick Start" click Control Panel" click Performance and /aintenance" and then click
Sc&eduled Tas%s. 8ight-click the task you want to change" and then click Properties. #n the task4s
properties window" click the Security tab" and then set the permissions and credentials used to run the task.
8%B version of Windows Vista: %lick the Start button" click Control Panel" click System and
/aintenance" click Administrati#e Tools" and then double-click Tas% Sc&eduler. =elect a task" click
Properties" and then" on the !eneral tab" set the security options with the correct credentials to run the
task.
3fter you update tasks" make sure they work correctly before you upgrade to Windows Vista. To do this" right-click
the task" and then click 0un.
#n addition" when upgrading from the 8%B version of Windows Vista" any modifications that you have made to the
default tasks (tasks that come pre-installed with Windows* will be overwritten by the new default configuration.
$pgrading is not supported for some language #ersions of Windows 1P
!pgrading from the following language versions of Windows 56 to the matching language of Windows Vista is not
supported:

#f you have one of these operating systems" you will need to perform a clean installation of Windows Vista. ;efore
you do this" be sure to disable all antivirus software and back up your files to an e<ternal hard disk" )V) or %)"
!=; flash drive" or network folder.
To perform a clean installation" you have three options:
1. 8eformat the partition on which Windows 56 is located and then install Windows Vista on that partition. )o
this if you have backed up your files.
2. #nstall Windows Vista onto another partition and keep your Windows 56 installation on the same computer. $ou
can do this if you have enough disk space for both operating systems.
3. #nstall Windows Vista onto the same partition as Windows 56 without reformatting it. )o this if you want the
previous Windows 56 installation to be saved to the W#@)?W=.?D) directory on your computer. $ou can
access or remove this directory after the installation completes. 0iles that were previously located in the My
)ocuments folder will not be automatically transferred to the )ocuments folder in Windows Vista.
