Case 2029-2
Austenitic Stainless Steel, 18Cr-20Ni-5.5Si, UNS
S32615 Construction
Section VIII, Division 1
Inquiry: Under what conditions is it permissible in
welded construction conforming to the rules of Section
VIII, Division 1, to use UNS S32615 austenitic stainless
steel, seamless tubes, seamless pipe, plate, and bars,
conforming to the chemical composition requirements
of Table 1 and the mechanical property requirements
of Table 2, and otherwise conforming to the require-
ments of Specications SA-213, SA-312, SA-240, and
SA-479 as applicable?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that the
materials described in the Inquiry may be used in
Section VIII, Division 1, construction provided the
following additional requirements are met.
(a) The grain size of the material, determined in
accordance with ASTM Methods E 112, Plate II, shall
be No. 3 or ner.
(b) The maximum nominal thickness of the weld
shall be limited to
1

2
in.
(c) The rules in Section VIII, Division 1, Subsection
C, Part UHA, for austenitic stainless steel shall apply.
(d) The maximum design metal temperature shall
not exceed 400F.
(e) The maximum allowable design stress values
shall be those listed in Table 3.
(f) For external pressure design, use Fig. 5,
UHA-28.1.
(g) Separate welding procedure and performance
qualications shall be conducted for the material in
accordance with Section IX. Welding shall be limited
to the GTAW and GMAW processes.
(h) This Case number shall be included in the material
identication and on the Data Report.
