Case 2067-2
UNS S31803 Plates and Seamless and Welded
Pipe and Tube and Forgings
Section VIII, Division 2
Inquiry: Under what conditions may UNS S31803
ferritic-austenitic stainless steel plates conforming to
Specication SA-240 and seamless and welded pipe and
tube conforming to SA-789 and SA-790 and forgings to
SA-182, be used in welded construction under the rules
of Section VIII, Division 2?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that the
material described in the Inquiry may be used in the
construction of welded pressure vessels conforming to
the rules of Section VIII, Division 2, providing the
following additional requirements are met.
(a) For minimum design metal temperatures colder
than 20F, impact testing shall be required (see
AM-213).
(b) The design stress intensity and S
y
values shall
be as listed in Table 1.
(c) For external pressure design, Fig. HA-5 of Section
II, Part D shall be used.
(d) This material shall be considered P-No. 10H,
Group 1.
(e) Heat treatment after forming or fabrication is
neither required nor prohibited but, when heat treatment
is performed, it shall be performed in the range from
1900F to 2010F, followed by water quenching, or
rapidly cooling by other means.
(f) Impact tests as prescribed in AM-300, shall be
made on base metal, heat affected zone, and weld

metal, for minimum design metal temperatures of 20F
and warmer for nominal thickness greater than

in.
Impact testing is required on all thickness of material
when the material is used at temperatures colder than
20F, except as exempted by para. AM-204.2(c).
(g) This Case number shall be included in the mark-
ing of the material and shall be shown on the Manufac-
turers Data Report.
CAUTIONARY NOTE: Exposure to temperatures in the range of
1100F to 1700F for relatively short periods of time may result in
severe loss in ductility due to sigma phase formation.

(1) This material may be expected to develop embrittlement after
service at moderately elevated temperatures. See Appendix K.
