Pursuit of Happiness
In the New Year we wished each
other happiness, yet the search for
it is by no means new. The search
started with the dawn of humanity,
and in ancient times many a writing
addressed happiness. Discussions
about the pursuit of happiness, first
identified as an inalienable right,
have been part of American life since
the Declaration of Independence. In
the eighteenth century the topic was
generalized, until it gained momentum
in the nineteen sixties with the advent

The best description of happiness
is satisfaction. The individual must
be content with his/her life. A happy
person finds that it is indeed a pleasure

Chris Nevitt to ease the city approval
process for evaporative coolers while
keeping the process the same for air
conditioners.
Greenprint Denver was adopted
by the City over a year ago as a
comprehensive plan for reducing
our contribution to global warming.
One recent action taken as part of
that plan was to reduce the amount
of energy used by the City Hall
holiday display. Many of the incan-
descent lights used in the display
were replaced this year with LED
lights, saving 3,300 kilowatt-hours of
energy and preventing three tons of
carbon dioxide from going into the
atmosphere.
The City is also incorporating
green concepts in its first ever com-
prehensive revision to the zoning
code, looking at ways to encourage
new buildings to be energy efficient
and at other tools for energy conser-
vation. The City is also undertaking
a Solid Waste Master Plan, which
will include strategies for expand-
ing recycling programs. We are
also working with the Democratic
National Committee to minimize
waste and energy consumption from
this summer’s convention.
Denver recently signed on to
the newly created World Mayors’
and Local Governments’ Climate
Protection Agreement, a document
originating from the recent inter-
national conference in Indonesia.
The agreement follows an earlier
agreement signed by over 600 cities
worldwide as a means of tackling
global warming one city at a time,
worldwide.

a pilot's dream
Jack Blosser is living his dream
and loving every minute.
After teaching and tutoring classes
and flight simulation in the highly
ranked School of Aerospace Science
at Metropolitan State College for over
eight years, he has been selected as
one of several pilots to receive coveted
training in one of two CRJ aircraft sys-
tems. The CRJ Q-200 twin engine is
a state-of-the-art jet that Frontier has
selected as part of its Lynx line and
deemed as future competition with
United’s successful Ted.
This is hot off-the-press news. The
curriculum for the Metro student
courses hasn’t even been developed
and the simulation labs are being
built as you read this. The training
will prepare students in the latest in
avionics, including all-glass instru-
mentation.
The fact that Jack is 80 years old
– and sharp as they come – is only
incidental.
“If I weren’t doing this [teaching],
I don’t know what I’d be doing,” he
said. “My greatest satisfaction is mak-
ing a contribution in the lives of these
kids.”
Blosser, who logs in an average of
15-20 hours tutoring, teaching flight
simulation and Global Positioning
Satellite (GPS), as well as the CRJ
classes he currently takes, teaches as
a volunteer.
In April 2001, he was nominat-
ed for the News 7 Everyday Hero
Award.
“My students are exceptional,” he
beams. The success stories rev his
engine. One young man, certified for
Leer, 737, Falcon 2000 and other jets,
he says, is now a private jet pilot for
the Remax president.
Ever since he was a boy, Jack has
loved aeronautics - anything to do
with planes and flying. From build-
ing “hundreds of” models, to earning
his pilots’ license and masterminding
a two-week adventuresome ride in
a B-13 retired basic trainer plane for
Army and Air Force around America
with his best friend when they were
22.
His two passions, teaching and
flying, became a fulfilling reality late
in life because Jack had the persis-
tence and fortitude to press on toward
the dream...

opment, father of four, Jack has lived
a full life. But with his marriage to his
college sweetheart Pat and balancing
a family of six and career, he had to
set aside his true passion, flying.
But more than six decades into his
life, Jack experienced a major turning
point. He had a choice. Sit around
with many other seniors who now
fill the assisted living apartment com-
plex where he lives, putting puzzles
together and playing chess, living
only on memories and wishful think-
ing.
Or follow a dream.
Jack says he will never forget the
evening in the early 1990s when he
gazed at a beautiful orange-streaked
Colorado sunset with his youngest
son, Kenny.
“So what do you want to do, Dad
- retire?”
Jack was thoughtful.
“Well,” his son urged, “why don’t
you follow your dream? Why don’t you
do what you have always wanted to
do?”
Jack considered it. He looked
around him at the seniors who seemed
to be wasting away, awash in memo-
ries of the past. And he wondered -
how could he get back to his first love
of actual participation in aeronautics,
and not just as a ground level specta-
tor?
With Kenny’s encouragement,
Jack, who had long ago achieved
senior citizen status, enrolled in the
Emily Griffin School of Aeronautics at
Stapleton. With a proficiency update
and flight hours, he renewed his
pilot’s license.
After that, what next?
“Opportunities abound in the
newspaper.” Jack, who is a vora-
cious reader, smiles. “And one day
I came upon a great one: the free
Metro-Meritus education program at
Metropolitan College for seniors.” In
this program, anyone in the Denver
area 60 and older could audit classes.
“Auditing means no tests,” Jack
smirks.
He plunged in and got busy again,
taking most of the aviation courses
offered at Metro. But it was not with-
out a lot of trepidation at first. Here
he was surrounded by young kids
in their teens and 20s! He thought
to himself at first looking around at
the young kids, “What the heck am
I doing in these classes?!” It took
teachers’ aid in one of the simulator

Maccabi Games have become the
largest Jewish teen event in the world
– each summer about 6,000 entrants
participate. Besides athletic competi-
tion the games promote teamwork,
positive feelings about being Jewish

for Skiers

cancers are caused by sun exposure.
"It's easy to associate winter with

Cancer Foundation. "With the cold-

enough sunscreen and therefore do
not get the maximum protection.
* Use a more moisturizing sun-
screen. Winter conditions can be par-
ticularly harsh on the skin.
* Be sure to cover often-missed
spots: lips, ears, around eyes, neck,
underside of chin, scalp and hands.
* Always wear a lip balm with an
SPF 15 or higher - lips are even more
sensitive than most parts of the skin.
* Cover up with clothing, includ-
ing a broad-brimmed hat and
UV-blocking sunglasses.
* Reapply at least every two hours,
and more often after sweating or
exposure to wind and snow.
* Carry a travel-sized sunscreen
and lip balm with you on the slopes.
Reapply on the chairlift, especially
after a long, snow-blown run.
Cover Up
* Wear items like ski masks,
which will cover most of the skin,
leaving very little exposed to the
wind and sun.
* UV-blocking sunglasses or
goggles that offer 100% UV protec-
tion and have wraparound or large
frames protect your eyelids and the
sensitive skin around your eyes,
common sites for skin cancer and
sun-induced aging. The sun's rays
and glare can impair your vision, so
it's important to wear sunglasses
or goggles to clearly see the terrain.
Plus, it will increase your enjoyment
and performance while skiing.
Be mindful of time spent in the
sun, regardless of the season.
* Keep track of the time you
spend in full sunlight. If possible, ski
early in the morning and later on
in the day, before 10AM and after
4PM. This helps avoid long lines and
decreases the amount of time spent
outdoors in the most intense hours of
sunlight.
* If you are on the slopes for most
of the day, take a few breaks indoors
to reapply sunscreen.
* Drink plenty of water to avoid
dehydration from the sun.

avoid the damage the cold season

A review of recessions
This economic slump
could be just another
“bump in the road.”
Economists widely agree:
America seems to be in a reces-
sion. Important economic indi-
cators show declining manufac-
turing, a constricting retail and
service sector, and poor GDP. So is
the sky falling? Is this the end of
the world? No. Recessions have
occurred throughout our history,
and the economy has bounced
back.
The National Bureau of
Economic Research has identi-
fied ten American recessions since
World War II; this would be the
eleventh. Let’s take a look at
some notable recessions in recent
decades, and the way Wall Street
reacted to them.
The 2001 recession
This one lasted eight months,
by NBER’s estimation, and it fol-
lowed the longest economic expan-
sion in U.S. history (1991-2001). It
accompanied the last bear market,
which lasted roughly from mid-
2000 to late 2002. In 2002, stocks
tanked: the Dow Jones Industrial
Average was down 16.8% for the
year, the S&P 500 sank 23.4%, and
the NASDAQ fell 31.5%. But in
2003, the market made a powerful
comeback: the Dow gained 25.3%
on the year, the S&P 500 26.4%,
and the NASDAQ an amazing
50%. The bulls kept running right
on through 2007.
The 1990-91 recession
Some trace the roots of this one
back to Black Monday in 1987,
others to the S&L failures and
junk bond collapses of the late
1980s. The first three quarters of
its monetary policy in response to
the runaway inflation of the late
1970s. But economists see it differ-
ently, arguing that Fed chairman
Paul Volcker had to do something
– and something drastic – to get
the economy back on its feet. The
Fed ended up hiking interest rates
all the way to 21.5% in December
1980 (the all-time record), and
during this recession, the jobless
rate was higher than at any time
since the Great Depression. But
the Fed’s tactic worked. By 1983,
inflation was down from double
digits to 3.2%. Between February
1983 and August 1987, the Dow
climbed from the 1,100s to 2,700.
The 1973-75 recession
Ah, yes. Remember waiting
in line for gas? Remember buy-
ing gas only on even or odd days
according to your license plate?
This one occurred not only due to
the OPEC embargo, but also as a
byproduct of the U.S., U.K., and
other key nations going off the
gold standard in the early 1970s.
That move devalued the dollar
and other benchmark currencies.
So in October 1973, OPEC decided
to price oil relative to the price of
gold instead of the value of the
dollar. Its member nations also
cut production levels. Over the
next few months, crude oil prices
quadrupled. Commodities prices
took off. The bull market in com-
modities lasted until the dawn of
the 1980s. When the OPEC embar-

the middle of a bear market. Yet
just a short time later, in July
1976, the Dow hit 1,011, its highest
point between January 1973 and
October 1982.
So some perspective is in
order.

is to plant herbs. Most gardeners, if they
have room, will have an herb garden. I
have herbs but they are scattered among
flowering plants. I grow parsley, dill,
basil and three or four mints.
Many herbs grow well for us. Mints
are used to aid digestion. They open


up the stomach so food can slip into

varied. It includes catnip, horsemint,
lemon balm, spearmint and peppermint.
Chewing peppermint leaves is one way

pest. Go into the mountains and bring
home some leaves as this is the part
that’s used.
Dandelions are used to stimulate the
liver and eliminate toxins in the blood.
Who does not have a plethora of these
plants? Pick or dig it early in the spring
(the only time you can use this plant)
and make a tea of the ground-up root.
According to my herb books, dandelion
tea is for everything that ails you.

On February 8, 2008, Dave
Siefkas, President of LUN, and
Kirsten Froyd, LUN Board represen-
tative for the South Neighborhood,
met with Mayor Hickenlooper
to discuss the Buckley Annex
Development. Also present at
the meeting were representatives
from several other Registered
Neighborhood Organizations
and Home Owner’s Associations:
Crestmoor(3), LRA/LCMA/Task
Force, Windsor Gardens, Park
Forest, and Lowry Neighbors.
The following are highlights of
the meeting; comments made by
Mayor Hickenlooper:
·The Mayor acknowledged the
community’s concerns. He dis-
cussed his desire for the best plan
and acknowledged that the imme-
diate surrounding communities are
the ones with the best perspective.
The Mayor stated “…consensus
must be built for those most imme-
diately affected by the decisions.”
·The Mayor indicated the plan is
far from being completed and that
undoubtedly there would be chang-
es in the future. The Mayor stated,
“The GDP (General Development
Plan) is where the rubber meets the
road.”
·The Mayor firmly stated the
City was not going to do the GDP,
and furthermore, the City didn’t
have the money to do it. Peter
Parks, City Planning Director, com-
mented that he would rather see
the owner or developer of the land
submit the GDP. The City said they
expected the community to have
input.
·The Mayor emphatically
stated, “I guarantee the Federal
Government will not trump the
City.” The Mayor stated neither
the Air Force, nor anyone else for
that matter, would take precedence
over City zoning regulations. He
