The following questions are intended to help you prepare for the exam; however they do not cover all
possible topics for the exam. You should review your notes, textbook and homework problems.

brain cancer. Each cancer patient was matched with a person of the same sex, age, and race
who did not have brain cancer, then asked about use of cell phones.
b. An educational software company wants to compare the effectiveness of its computer
animation for teaching about supply and demand curves with that of a textbook presentation.
The company tests the economic knowledge of a number of first-year college students, then
divides them into two groups. One group uses the animation, and the other studies the text.
The company retests all the students and compares the increase in economic understanding in
the two groups.

6. Identify the (a) sample and (b) population. Also, determine whether the sample is likely to be
(c) representative of the population.
The Coca Cola Company has 366,000 stockholders. A company researcher mails a
satisfaction survey to all the stockholders and asks them to mail back a response. He gets back
21,588 responses.

7. Refer to Data Set 1 in Appendix B on page 739, and use the white blood cell count (WHITE) values
for the 40 females. (a) Construct a frequency distribution beginning with a lower class limit of 4.0
and use a class width of 2.0. Also, (b) construct a relative frequency distribution, and
(c) a cumulative frequency distribution. (d) Describe the nature of the distribution.

8. At an outpatient testing center, a sample of 20 days showed these
numbers of cardiograms done each day. Construct a stem and leaf
plot for the data.




9. Email spam is the curse of the Internet. Here is a compilation of the most
common types of spam.
a. Draw a Pareto chart to describe the data.
b. Determine the central angles of a pie chart that correspond to each
category.




10. The Queen Mary sailed between England and the United States, and stowaways were sometimes
found on board. The ages (in years) of stowaways from eastbound crossings and westbound crossings
are given below. (a) For each set of data find mean, mode, range and standard variation. Use the
Round-Off Rule to correctly round your answers.
