TITLE: ' SOIL INVESTIGATION REPORT FOR
LOCATION FJ-7. BOMBAY HIGH SOUTH FIELD
SUMMARY
Geotechnical Field Investigation was performed by M/ s TL Geotechnics Pte Ltd foI
ONGC-Marine Survey Division from ONGC's Geotechnical . vessel "Samudra
Sarvekshak" between 1 lth May to 17* May 2003 for the borehole location FJ -7 in
Bombay High South Field, off west coast of India.
The purpose of the investigation was to ascertain'the soil conditions at the location for the
design and installation of pile foundations for a fixed jacket platform. The borehole was
terminated at 125.0 m. A separate CPT location was also carried out continuously to 12 m a1
a distance fiom the sample borehole.
Additional laboratory testing, evaluation of design parameters and engineering analysis
were carried out at Institute of Engineering & Ocean Technology, ONGC, Panvel. The
laboratory testing was specifically planned to provide soil parameters for mudmat bearing
capacity and pile design.
The soil profile at borehole location FJ-7 consists of layers of soft to stiff calcareous
clays and carbonate and silica sands with varying degrees of cementation.
Soil design parameters are given for estimation of the static ultimate bearing capacity oj
steel pipe piles. In addition, axial pile capacity curves, p-y, q-z and t-z data for a 54" OD.
2" thick steel pipe pile has also been presented. The bearing capacity of seabed soil has
been assessed for mudmat design. The ultimate axial pile capacity of 25 I" is achievec
at a penetration of about 90.00 m for a steel pipe pile of 54" OD and 2" wall thickness
J ack-up rig footing penetration analysis was carried out for the standard ONGC spudcar
and its expected penetration under maximum preload of 45MN is about 8-50 m. I t i:
recommended that prcloading at this site shall be done very carefully in the initial stage:

Soil properties and design parameters
The soil profile at borehole location FJ -7 consists of layers of soft to stiff calcareous clay
and carbonate sand having varying degrees of cementation.
5.3.1 Clays
Visual observation of colour and reaction to HCI has also been considered while
classifying the clays as Calcareous or Carbonate. I t is to be mentioned that the bag samples
used for the carbonate content determinations is a mixture/conglomerate of the clay and
pockets of fine sand. In general, sand pockets and shell fragments were noticed in most of
the clay layers.
The Activity Chart shows clays to be generally active to medium active or inactive and the
results plot above activity line of 1.35.Clays generally show low to high plasticity. The
results plot above A-Line on the plasticity chart.
The cone penetrometer resulrs were used for interpretation of shear strengths of clay
layers. The undrained shear strength measurements by various tests show a general trend
of increasing / constant strength with depth. The design shear strength profile has been
derived based on the results of various laboratory tests with more \\rightage on UU tests
and strengths interpreted from CPTs.
For reconmendation of the shear strength profile, only those UU test results have been
uscd which are found in confomiancc with the gencral behaviour of the layer in
co 11side ra t i on.

Visual observation of colour and reaction to HCI has also been considered while classifying
the sands in addition to carbonate content. The sand layers between 0.00 m to 1 S O m, 5.20 m
to 6.60 m, 8.80 rn to 1 1.70 m and 15.60 m to 16.70 m is loose and between I 1.70 m to 13.10
nl, 16.70 to 37.00 m, 49.90 rn to 54.00 rn, 69. 3 rn to 80.20 rn, 86.80 in to 89.10 rn sild
101.10 m to 105.40 m is medium dense. Sand layers between 89.10 m to 99.10 1.1and
109.30 m to 114.80 m are dense. Sand layers also have shell fragments. The CPTs show a
maximum tip resistance of 36 Mpa.
The design friction angles of the sands were evaluated fiom the estimated densities and soil
type. The nature of calcareous/carbonate sands - lower crushing strength, higher
compressibility and arching effect causing low residual radial stresses after pile driving - has
been given due consideration while selecting design fiiction angles.
The design friction angles for sand layers are in the range of 20 to 35 degrees. Allowance has
-
been made for occurrence of weaker layers and the contents of fines.
A limiting skin friction of 20 kPa, for all the sand layers, was selected for driven piles
because of high carbonate contents and cementation, and limiting skin frictions for other
sand layers has been based on the density of sand. The limiting end bearing values were
selected on the basis of density, degree of cementation and cone resistance. The limiting end
bearing values for sands and cemented zones vary between 2.0 to 6.0 MPa.

6.2 Axial Pile Capacity
Axial pile capacities were calculated after an evaluation of the suitability of various design
methnds for the type of soils encountered at the location. The API criteria were selected as
the general design method with the following modifications and restrictions:
l nsadc Ultimate axial beanng capacity in sands is calculated based on API RP2A - 1993
using k=0.7 in compression and k=OS in tension. Also, limiting unit skin friction and unit
end bearing values as given in the design parameters on Plate nos.1 and 2 are used in
engineering analysis.
lmdags Ultimate axial bearing capacity in clays is calculated based on MI RP2A - 1986
method 2 with the following modifications :
For normally consolidated clays with Su/p,'< 0.45, a method (Tomlinson, 1977) has been
used with a=0.7. For overconsolidated clays with Su/p,I>0.45, API RP 2A 1986 Method 2
has been used.
For evaluating axial capacity in tension (pull out capacity) pile self-weight is not considered.
Unit skin friction on the inside of the pile is considered same as the unit skin friction on the
outside of the pile. Plug length to pile penetration ratio has been assumed to be 0.9 for
calculation of inner skin friction.
In calculation of axial pile capacity in compression, transition fiom weak to strong and
strong to weak layers has been accounted for. The transition from a weak clay layer to a
strong clay layer and vice versa is accounted for by linearly increasing Nc value from 6 at the
interface of the layers to 9 at a depth of 3 pile diameter. Similarly. in case of a strong sand
layer, transition is accounted for by linearly increasing the limiting end bearing value fiom
qlim(weak layer) at the interface of the layers to qIlm (strong layer) at a depth of 3 pile
diameters.
A local scour of 1.50 m. eaual to the deDth of the toD sand laver is considered .and -
corresponding overburden reduction zone of 1 S O m has been considered.
Unit values for skin friction and end bearing as derived from the design parameters are
presented in graphical fomi on Plate Nos.3 and 4 respectively. The ultimate capacity in
tension and compression of a 53" dia. and 2" thick open ended pipe pile is presented on Plate
No.5. The capacity is governed by plugged behavior in most of the layers. The required
penetration for an ultimate compressive load of 25.0 MN is reached at a depth of about 90.0
111.

6.3 Axial Load-Deformation Data (f -: and y-z data)
In this report the skin friction VS. deflection (t -z) data has been schematized as curves of five
points. I t is assumed that the residual ultimate skin friction is reached at 1% of the pile
diameter (Vijayvergia, 1977). The ultimate values are consistent with the unit slun fiction
values given on Plate no. 3. The t-z data are presented on Plate nos. 6 to 8.
The pile tip load vs deflection (4-2) data is schematized as curves of five points. The 4-2 data
has been derived based on load test data (Beringen, 1979 and Vijayvergia, 1977) and
correlation with laboratory tests on carbonate soils. The end bearing is developed at much
larger deflection than outer skin fnction. The ultimate values are consistent with the unit end
bearing values given on Plate no. 4. Transition fiom weak to strong and strong to weak
layers is accounted for in the analysis. The q-z data have been given for potential bearing
layers below 49.90 m to the end of the borehole. The q-z data are presented on Plate nos. 9 to
11.
6.4 Lateral Load-Deformation Data @-u data)
Bending moments and deflections induced in laterally loaded piles are usually evaluated
numerically with techniques similar to those for axial pile analyses. Input information for
such spring supported beam-column models includes curves of lateral soil pressure per unit
pile length versus lateral deflection @-y) data.
The design parameters used in the analysis are initial subgrade reaction moduli, k, for sands
and strain at 50% of failure stress, E ~ , for clays, which are presented on Plate Nos. 1 and 2.
Design values of 0.5% to 1.5% were selected for clays from an evaluation of the soil
properties and design recommendations for evaluation of p-y data. The design k values
range from 5.50 to 34.60 MN/m' for sands.
The p-y data is generated based on Matlock (1970) approach for soft clays and Reese et a1
(1975) approach for stiff clays. The transition undrained shear strength level between soft
and stiff clays is considered as 96.0 H a as per API recommendation.
For sands the p-y data is generated using ONeil and Murchison (1983) approach. This
approach has also been applied for cemented soil layers. The initial slope of the p-y curve is
very important and is a function of k, initial modulus of subgrade reaction. A check is
applied on the first point ( p / . y / ) to ensure that the computed k value is within 5% of the
design k value. Also, p l . p2, p3 and p4 values are limited to a value of limiting pile end
bearing of the concerned layer times the pile outer diameter.
The p-y data, down to 49.90 in depth, generated for 54 inch OD piles, are presented on Plate
Nos. 12 to 13.
10
geotechnical
6.5 Mudmat bearing capacity
Mudmat ultimate bearing capacities have been computed for square, rectangular and
triangular mudmats without considering ~ r y Liar of safeij md assuming that penetration
into the sea floor does not occur.
The results of the calculation for triangular, square and rectangular mudmats with L/W
(LengtWidth) ratio of 2 are shown on Plate No: 14
,-
The ultimate bearing capacity is plotted versus side W, for square mudmats, side B for
triangular mudmats of equal sides and with smaller side W for rectangular mudmats,
(L/W=2). The recommended bearing capacity of mudmat is calculated using the projected
area method for sand over clay - two layer system - using a load spread of 1 :3.
6.6 J ack-up Rig Spudcan Penetration
J ack-up rig footing penetration analysis for the standard ONGC spudcan was
performed using the computer program SPUDPEN. The bearing capacity curve for
this rig is presented in Plate No. 15.
The leg penetration depth has been estimated for the maximum preload of 45 MN
and the penetration refers to the tip of the spudcan. Analyses do not account for
lateral variability of the soil strata.
I t is found from the analysis that the moderately cemented fine to coarse grained
silica sand is capable of supporting the rig spudcan. The likely spudcan penetration is
about 8.50 rn.
7.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The soil investigations and engineering analysis as presented in this report provide the
basic data for the foundation design of a piled platform. The soil profile consists
predominantly of layers of soft to stiff calcareous clay which are low to highly plastic and
calcareous and carbonate-sand layers with varying degrees of cementation.
I n recommending the design parameters, due consideration is laid on the results reported
in the preliminary field report and results of laboratory test performed at IEOT laboratory.
The CPT logs as presentcd i n I>reliminary report are interpreted baed upon the database
;ivailablc inhouse for calc:ircous / c;irbonate clays and sands.

1 I
The ultimate axial pile capacity is governed by plugged behavior. The ultimate axial pile
capacity in compression of 25.0 MN can be achieved at a penetration of about 90.0 rn for a
steel pipe pile of 54" outer diameter and 2" wall thickness.
I t is recommended to carry out detailed driveability studies giving due consideration to
likely setting up effects in clays.
The jack-up rig footing penetration analysis for the standard ONGC spudcan sho\ved that
the final penetration of the spudcan will be about 8.50 m under the maximum preload of
45 MN. However, it is recommended that preloading at this site shall be done very
carefully in the initial stages upto 8.50 m to avoid rapid penetration. In case of punch-
through in the upper sand layers the rig may rest at around 15.00 m.
