Brother And Sister Scammed Millions In NZ And USA

She worked as a credit controller,

the person in charge of collecting
outstanding invoices, and court
documents released to the media show
Mosese deposited cheques for payment
into a bank account with a similar name
to her employer.
She had taken control of an ANZ bank
account assigned to a social club under
the name of Daily Freight Ltd - with no

association to Daily Freight (1994) Ltd

which is a subsidiary of Mainfreight.
"Hundreds and hundreds" of cheques
were deposited into the account she
controlled, from which she withdrew
cash - up to $850,000 in one year.
Despite stealing nearly $4.5 million
over eight years, Mosese has few assets
in New Zealand to show for her fraud.
She owns several fashion boutique

stores and a beauty salon in

Manukau and describes herself as a
"successful business entrepreneur",
a "philanthropic humanitarian" and a
"deeply spiritual woman who is in tune
with the universe" on her blog.
Well known within the Fijian-Indian
community, Mosese lives in modest
mortgaged home in Otahuhu while a
late model BMW and Holden parked
in the driveway of the three-bedroom
property are financed.
Investigators have struggled to find
assets to repay the theft, although Daily
Freight Ltd has launched a civil action
to claw back its losses.
One source said she travelled overseas
frequently, particularly to visit Vincent
Singh in the United States, and had a
large collection of jewellery.
Mosese was fired in August after the
fraud was uncovered during an internal
examination of the freight forwarding
business.
Court documents show Mosese
assumed control of the Daily Freight
bank account in July 1996, although
the criminal charges laid against her
date back only to 2006.

CURRENCY smuggling continues

to be an area of concern for the Fiji
Revenue and Customs Authority
following a number of intercepted
cases at the border.
FRCA CEO Jitoko Tikolevu said
they were also concerned with the
number of locals involved in currency
smuggling or not declaring that they
were carrying more than $10,000 with
them when either arriving or leaving
the country.
"A total of three cases have been
intercepted at the Nadi International
Airport this year and all were referred to
police for further investigations," he said.
"Cases of locals involved the
apprehension of a Nausori couple who
were trying to flee the country with
more than $150,000 undeclared cash
stacked inside their luggage in March
while an Asian couple were found
in possession of more than $76,000
undeclared currency.
"The third case involved a Nausori
businessman who was intercepted

with more than $30,000 at the Nadi

International Airport. He was booked
for a flight to Los Angeles."
Mr Tikolevu said all cases were
under police investigation, adding
under Section 32 (1) of the Financial
Transactions Reporting Act 2004, any
person leaving or arriving into the
country with more than $10,000 should
declare it to FRCA or face a fine of up
to $60,000 or an imprisonment of up to
10 years or both.
"Despite numerous reminders, there
are certain people who are still trying
to beat the system. We would also
like to warn all those out there who
are thinking of trying to smuggle
currency," Mr Tikolevu said.
"A number of people have also
been fined and incarcerated for
currency smuggling in the past few
months."
He said they had well-trained and
qualified Customs officers at the port
of entries who were clamping down
hard on currency smuggling.

which totaled US$20 million.

He told 190 investors, mainly from
the Fijian Indian community, that he
was using their money for third-party
lending with interest rates of up to 80
per cent.
In fact, Singh gambled US$12 million,
withdrew US$2 million in cash,
invested US$1 million in the film
project and spent a further $1 million
on other business ventures.
Singh also used millions of dollars of
investor money to pay other victims in a
Ponzi scheme to give Perfect Financial
the false appearance of success.
He will be sentenced next month and
faces up to 25 years in prison.
His older sister, Sushila Devi Mosese,
is in custody and will be sentenced in
July after the 51-year-old had earlier
pleaded guilty to eight charges of
dishonestly using a document to obtain
nearly $4.5 million from Mainfreight
dating back to 2006.
Mosese was a trusted "household
name" in Mainfreight, according to
one source at the transport and logistics
company, and had worked there since
1988.

Sushila Mosese was credit controller at Mainfreight and used her role to steal
cheques worth millions.

Visa Exemption For Diplomats To Indonesia

Fijian diplomats travelling to
Indonesia will not need visas any
longer following the signing of a

meeting between the Fijian Prime
Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, and
the Indonesian President, Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono, who is in Fiji

one of six MOUs signed by the two
governments in various fields to
strengthen the cooperation between
Fiji and Indonesia. Other Agreements
signed were under the areas of
fisheries, public works infrastructure,
diplomatic training, youth and sports
and visa exemption for diplomats.
PM Bainimarama thanked President

Yudhoyono for Indonesias support

Attractive Home Loan Package

Special deal for all potential customers

who intend to apply for Government
Grant for First Time Home Owners
HFC Bank, our only local bank, has
announced it is introducing a Super
Dream Government Grant Loan.
This follows the announcement of the
Government Grant to First Time Home
Owners.
HFC Bank has thus created a special

potential customers who intend to
apply for this government grant.
Chief executive, Isikeli Tikoduadua,
described this product to be very
unique with equity of just 10 per cent.

given to those who intend to build their
first home and $5000 for those who

Clean Fuel For Fiji

FIJI should consider the bulk buying
of Euro IV fuel for Pacific Island
countries in order to reduce costs to
each country, as well as fuel emissions
per country.
Euro IV fuel is a measure of an
acceptable standard of fuel emissions
as decided by the European Union for
its EU member states and generally,
the higher the number, the cleaner the
emission, the Australian Environment
Department website explains.
The suggestion was made as part of

contributions to the final Green Growth

Framework for Fiji document expected
to be presented to Cabinet for approval
and endorsement.
"Transport use is probably one of the
major causes of climate change the
impacts of which is facing all of us
here in the Pacific Islands," explained
the working group's chairman, Mark
Borg. Mr Borg said it was important
the document reflected efforts put into
promoting fuel efficiency in all forms
of transport.

Hawkins To Start Work On

Integral Project For Fiji

Hawkins and joint venture partner

Pacific Building Solutions (PBS) have
been selected to complete the Nadi
International Airport Modernization
project.
The 16 month project, circa $50M,
involves the demolition, construction,
refurbishment and modernization of
the South Pacifics most integral airport
and is part of a large modernization
programme being implemented by the
Fiji Government.
This will be the first large project in Fiji
for Hawkins which has an impressive
track record delivering airport projects
throughout New Zealand.
Hawkins has entered into a joint venture
partnership with Fijis largest building
company PBS for the project and will
be the main building contractor. The
partnership will be a collaborative one
with Hawkins bringing their extensive
airport knowledge and skills and
PBS providing local resources and an
understanding of Fijis weather and
construction processes.
Construction Manager Paul Youngman,
who recently worked on the integrated
terminal project at Christchurch

International Airport, says this is a

great opportunity for Hawkins to bring
our experience and knowledge of
working in live airport environments
and share that with local company PBS.
Through working closely with PBS
we will encourage local involvement
in the project and opportunities for up
skilling their employees.
Working in a live airport environment
can seem daunting at first but Hawkins
is well used to it by now. You not only
have to be mindful of noise, dust,
safety and that the public and airport
community are not inconvenienced but
also be constantly aware of security
protocols and procedures, said
Youngman.
Work is set to begin on 15 July 2014
with a completion date of 15 October
2015.
The modernization project will see a
4000m2 increase in floor space, a newly
built check-in building, additional
counters, more carousels, improved
accessibility, higher ceilings, improved
passenger flow and new safety systems.
During construction the airport will
remain fully operational.

Media Persons To Register Themselves To Cover Election

The Fijian Elections Office has

released registration forms for media
organisations to cover the September 17
election. In a statement, the FEO says
accreditation is necessary to provide
media access to electoral areas including
polling stations at the 2014 elections.
In order to obtain accreditation from
the FEO, media representatives and
organisations must agree to follow
internationally recognised standards
of conduct. The FEO also issued five
conditions it deemed as essential
including that the media person and
organisations must be registered with

the Fijian Media Industry Development

Authority (MIDA) prior to applying
for accreditation from the FEO. They
must respect the sovereignty of the
country, respect and adhere to the laws
of Fiji and the rules of its election
management body. They must also
not give instructions to electoral
administrators or interfere with the
internal government operations of Fiji.
Media representatives and organisations
are also not to interfere with the work
of electoral administrators. In the event
they observe what they may consider
to be a breach of law or procedure,

they must inform the Supervisor of

Elections (SOE) and no other person.
No photographs, footage, or audio can
be taken unless the express permission
of the Supervisor of Elections or his
delegate is sought. No interviews are
to be conducted in a polling station or
with any staff of a polling station. The
FEO also emphasized on reporting the
facts and avoid generalizing on the basis
of limited observations. It further says
accreditation identity must also be worn
by media representatives at all times
and must be provided to Electoral or any
other State authority when requested.

Parents Of Boys Charged With

Stabbing Have Records

Accused in Kumar case both have

parents who have found themselves in
trouble with law
The parents of both boys charged over
the death of a dairy owner are in jail or
facing active criminal charges.
Kumar was farewelled by hundreds,
including family friends, and Labour
MPs Rajen Prasad and Phil Twyford,
Auckland mayor Len Brown and
deputy mayor Penny Hulse, at Ann's
Funeral Home.
His daughter Sheenal told mourners:
"We hope to be your children in our
next lives."
"Everything you did in life was for
us and we are really glad to see
us become the people you hoped we
would become," she added on behalf
of herself and brother Shivneel.
The Kumars' closeness and strong
sense of family duty were evident in
Sheenal's tribute.
"We missed out on the opportunity and
the honour of taking care of you in our
older years.
"It saddens us both that we won't
have that opportunity and we won't be
able to give you what you gave your
parents," she added.
Arun gave Sheenal and her brother
Shivneel "everything they wanted and

more" and his wisdom and guidance

would be sorely missed, the children
said.
"Your honour and dignity will live
through us," Sheenal added.
Despite the circumstances of Arun's
death, master of ceremonies Sam
Achary told mourners not to ask how
or why the crime occurred, or to seek
recrimination, but to comfort one
another.
"The family is going through a difficult
time today.
"Tomorrow it could be any one of us."
It's also understood two more youths
could face charges in relation to the
alleged burglary of Kumar's. Court
documents showed the boys charged
were alleged to have at least two cooffenders.
Extended family members spoke on
online networks this week of disbelief
and disgust at the stabbing.
Yet some friends in the same social
network seemed to laugh off the
incident.

His wife Anita was in the shop during
the attack and remained by his side
until the ambulance arrived.
The youths remain in custody until
they appear in court later this month.

The proposed Fiji United Freedom

Party can reapply for registration
to contest the forthcoming general
elections, says Supervisor of Elections
Mohammed Saneem.
The party's initial application was
rejected last Friday for failure to
provide 5000 valid signatures. They
had provided 5489 signatures of which
only 3822 were deemed to be valid.
To reapply, they will be required to
provide the valid 5000 signatures as
well as meet all other requirements as
per section six of the Political Parties
Registration Decree.
Registrations are open till the date the
writs are issued so any associations or
persons can still apply, Saneem said.
The reapplication by the proposed
party will still be required to fulfill all
requirements.
The Fijian Elections Office will soon
release nomination forms for persons
wishing to contest the election as
independent candidates.
Meanwhile, the Indian Government
handed over eight vehicles, with an
additional two to arrive later, to the
Fijian Election Office.
Handing over the keys to the
Mahindra vehicles, worth a little over
a half-a-million in total, India's High
Commissioner to Fiji Vinod Kumar said
the provision of vehicles underlines the
Indian Government's commitment to
assist and further strengthen ties with

the Fijian Government.

I have been told these vehicles will
be used for the voter registration and
awareness programme. I hope the
commission will find these vehicles
useful for their work," Kumar said. He
also conveyed the Indian Government's
good wishes to the local government
and the Fijian Elections Office for a
successful election.
I also convey the assurances of the
Indian Government to further maintain
and develop our bilateral relations with
the Government of Fiji.
Accepting the keys, Fiji's Elections
Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said
the handover underlines the Indian
Government's confidence in the
election process.
He also expressed the Fijian
Government's appreciation to the
Indian Government. A Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) is expected
to be signed soon between the two
governments to formalise the Indian
Govt's provision of indelible ink for the
September 17 election.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem said the vehicles would help
ease the transportation needs of the
Fijian Elections Office.
It is very timely, he said, particularly
as the FEO embarks on its fourth
phase of the voter registration process
which will be coupled with some voter
awareness and voter education work.

The Bangladesh settlement, known

as Reservoir Road, is a multiracial
community has become the seventh
community in Tavua to join the
Governments program on safeguarding
the rights of women and children.
Last week the community was presented
with a certificate of commitment by the
Minister for Social Welfare, Women
and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko
Luveni.
The settlement which has a population
of 200 was identified by the Tavua Police
this year as one of the communities to
join the Zero Tolerance Violence Free
Community Campaign. The official
launching of the campaign this week
marked the beginning of 10 months
of awareness programs that will be
facilitated by Fiji Police, Ministry of
Women, Judiciary, Health, Agriculture
and Non-Government Organisations
like Red Cross and Empower Pacific.
In her opening address to the community,
Dr Luveni said the campaign aims to
break the silence on violence by raising
awareness on the issue.
I am pleased that Bangladesh has
taken up the challenge to undergo the
phases to become one of the violence
free communities. As they are taken
through different levels of awareness
program, the community will be able
to grasp a greater understanding about
the causes of violence and ways to
effectively address it, Dr Luveni said.
The campaign is championed by
male leaders, an approach that has led
to the wide spread coverage of this
campaign all over Fiji. The results
seen are encouraging-there is increase
in womens economic visibility and
decrease in the maltreatment of women
and also cut down on crime.
Speaking on behalf of the Bangladesh
community, Mr Rajneel Ram, station
officer of the Tavua Police Post said
that a new committee has been formed

to ensure the successful rollout of the

campaign.
As per the fourth phase of the
campaign, a gatekeepers committee
has been formed and it comprises
of the men and women leaders who
work closely with the police in trying
to stop violence. This year, we have
recorded two assault cases in this
settlement and we hope people will
come freely to report the cases once
the awareness programs begin. The
campaign, establishes a support system
that enables the victims to report cases
and also avail counseling and medical
services where needed, Mr Ram said.
Mrs Swashni Devi, president of
Reservoir Settlement Womens Club
thanked Minister Dr Luveni being the
first minister to ever set foot on the
soils of Bangladesh settlement.
The women are greatly touched by the
Ministers visit, the message she shared
today has motivated us to confidently
carry out our roles as mothers, wives
and daughters in our community. The
talanoa session with Dr Luveni has
also opened a new opportunity for the
Bangladesh women-we are happy that
the Ministry will assist us with start a
new canteen project through which our
club will further assist unemployed
women and children from poor
families.
We hope that such visits from senior
government officials will continue as
it makes it easy for us to access the
required services to improve the lives
of the poor and disadvantaged, Mrs
Devi said.
Any particular community that wishes
to join this campaign are advised to call
the Ministry of Women Headquarters
on 3312199 or visit their nearest
divisional and district women offices.
To date there are 89 communities that
have joined this campaign and many
more waiting in the queue.

"When the Fiji Labour Party contested
in the 1985 election, I lost to Mr Singh
by 241 votes, while his brother James

Dorsami Naidu Steps Down As

Law Society Chief

Dorsami Naidu formally steps down

as president of the Fiji Law Society
to pursue his political ambition after
being named as a National Federation
Party (NFP) candidate to contest the
September 17 election. The former
party president who was named along
with seven others, handed over the
FLS leadership at the annual general
meeting (AGM) at the Fijian Hotel
in Nadroga. Naidu confirms he is
not seeking re-election. "We have in
fact already got out voting system
such that we have already got a new

president, new committee members

and vice president whose names
will be disclosed at the AGM," he
said. Reflecting on his term as FLS
president, Naidu says he is happy to
have served the lawyers. He hopes
the AGM will spell the revival of the
FLS, and return with more vigour with
"lawyers once again taking up their
rightful position within society." Naidu
returns to the political scene after a
little over a decade. He contested both
the 1999 and 2001 general elections
with NFP. In 2006 he decided not to
because of the coups that appear to
happen each time the country holds
elections. This time, he wants back
in because of his love for Fiji and the
people. "The reason I want to get in
is because of experience and I believe
in this country and the people of this
country and I think they need a better
deal. "We can't be creating upheavals
all the time. Our country has to move
forward. Our young have to get jobs."
Naidu was a NFP MP for seven years
between 1992 and 1999. In November
1993 following the debate on the 1994
Budget, he called for a division or vote
on the budget which led to the defeat
of the 1994 Budget and the fill of
the Rabuka Govt, resulting in a snap
general election in February 1994. He
was NFP president from 2004 to 2005.

Prioritise Eye Health Care

People need to visit eye clinics to avoid
eye diseases which are common in Fiji.
This was highlighted at the recent
Pacific Regional Eye Conference
Pacific Journey towards Universal Eye
Health at Novotel in Lami.
International Agency for the Prevention
of Blindness Pacific coordinator Dr
Ana Cama said clinical evidence
indicated 80 per cent of blindness was
mainly because of three conditions
cataract (56 per cent), uncorrected
refractive error (12 per cent) and
diabetic retinopathy (12 per cent).
Eye care is specialised field and we
need more specialised nurses in this
field especially in diabetic clinics to
advise patients on how they control
their sugar and maintain their eye sight
diabetes need to ensure they get regular
eye checkups, Dr Cama said.
The rapidly rising prevalence rate
of diabetes and the high incidence of
vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy,
especially among the working age group,
are of great concern now," she added.
Dr Cama highlighted that the Pacific
needs more specialized people in the
field of eye care to ensure that Pacific
islanders do not succumb to such
diseases which can be prevented.
Meanwhile, Minister for Health Dr
Neil Sharma said Fiji has 22 eye care
nurses in Fiji.

Since 2006 a total of 69 nurses from

the region have graduated with post
graduate diploma in eye care, 22 are
from Fiji, Dr Sharma said.
By the end of 2014 a total of 30 nurses
and technicians from the seven Pacific
Island countries would have post

care, Dr Sharma said.
Dr Sharma acknowledged the Pacific
Eye Institute and other agencies for
their contributions towards improving
eye health care in the Pacific and
is adamant that these forums will

Health Minister Leads Blood

Donation Drive

The Health Minister Dr Neil Sharma

celebrated World Blood Donor Day
last Saturday by donating blood.
Dr Sharma was the chief guest at the
celebrations in Ba to acknowledge the
great contribution of regular voluntary
blood donors.
In his address, the Minister noted that
the theme of this years World Blood
Donor Day, Safe blood for saving
mothers, had particular resonance for
him as his own grandmother had died
in childbirth.
Dr Sharma said a lot of tertiary health
care has come to Fiji. Open Heart
Surgery, advanced joint and brain
surgeries are a few noted ones. There
is still a need for blood after road
accidents which are on the increase.
Blood is always in need.
Dr Ezekiel Nukuro, Team Leader and
Health System Development from the
World Health Organization was also in
attendance. In his address, Dr Nukuru
said, the safest blood is from regular
voluntary donors and that Fiji has
made great progress towards the goal
of 100% voluntary donation.
The celebrations were attended by
the Fiji Red Cross Society Western
Division branches and began with a
march through Ba town to Gujarati
Park.
Awards were presented to blood
drive organizers from each Division

and overall winners in the various

categories were presented with shields.
The Fiji Red Cross Society ran an
oratory competition for the secondary
schools in Ba on the theme of Safe
blood for saving mothers and winners
were award with prizes on this day.
The Blood Donor Bus and the Wellness
Bus were both on hand for blood
donation and medical checks. A total
of 36 blood donations were collected
at the event.

A new candidate for this year's election

in Fiji says the government ministers
should make their salaries public,
now that the Fiji First party has been
registered and launched.
The Fiji Government has promised
several times to reveal salaries of
ministers, after allegations those with a
number of portfolios, such as the prime
minister and the attorney general, were
paying themselves exorbitant salaries.
Last July, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum told
media the government would have

to reveal salaries to comply with the

political party decree.
It also promised it would do so once
the constitution was finalised.
A new candidate for the National
Federation Party, Dorsami Naidu, says
there can't be double standards leading
up to the September poll.
"There can't be two rules; you know a
different rule for us and a different rule
for them. We're not in an Animal Farm
- type situation. So we would be calling
them to account."

KAVA exporters can look forward

to a bright future following an
announcement by the Ministry of
Industry and Trade that a 10-year ban
on exports to Germany has been lifted.
Permanent secretary Shaheen Ali said

it could take a while for the decision to

be implemented.
Fiji exports kava to Fiji citizens in
Australia, US, New Zealand, UK and
could be viable for the European Union
market.

This year they were assisted by the
Northern Development Programme
[NDP] with $25,000 as a security for
their loan from the Fiji Development
Bank, which enabled them to buy a
new wood mizer electric saw worth
$80,000.
Mr Prataps son, Jitendra Prasad, said
the family business started in 2000
with a smaller electric saw.
Before we were using a small machine
but the production was really low so
we had to seek assistance from the
Forestry Department and they gave us
the idea of setting up a mini sawmill
to meet the demand for pellets, Mr
Prasad said.
To buy a bigger machine the family
then sought the assistance of the NDP,
which gave them a grant of $28,000 to
secure a loan of $80,000 from the FDB.
From that money were able to buy
a bigger machine called the wood

mizer which cost $120,000 and this

has increased our production by nearly
200per cent, Mr Prasad said.
We buy rejected logs or waste pine
logs from various contractors in Vanua
Levu and recycle them into pellets.
Marketing of their pellets is not a
problem. We market our pellets to six
major companies in Viti Levu namely
FMF, Nestle, Paradise Brewery,
RC Manu Bhai, Fiji Industries and
Standard Concrete, he said.
Mr Prasad said the above companies
usually ordered thousands of pellets
every month and with the new machine
the business is meeting these demands.
The selling price for our pellets range
from $25 to $30 each. We are producing
over a thousand pellets monthly, Mr
Prasad said.
The family business is not only
benefiting the economy of the North
but is a source of employment to people
in neighbouring communities.
From six workers with the old
machine we have increased the number
of workers to 11 since the introduction
of the new wood mizer machine, the
businessman said.

Increase In Chicken Sale Boost

Demand

THE high demand of chicken by the

Siberia Halal Meat in Labasa has
prompted the owners to request poultry
farmers on Vanua Levu for more
supply.
Owner Abdul Hamid said his local
demand stood at 50,000 chickens per
month, something he was trying very
hard to meet since he started business
three years ago.
"I am only producing 10,000 chickens
per month so far with a shortage of
40,000," Mr Hamid said.
"I house my own meat and layer birds
but it's not enough for the increasing
local demand every month.

"That's why I humbly request farmers

to sell their chickens to me.
"The chickens we buy ranges from
0.8kg to 2kg at a reasonable cost.
"It would really help a lot if the farmers
supply us with their chickens."
Meanwhile, Mr Hamid said his
business was progressing well. Right
now, business is doing just fine but we
are calling on the farmers to help us in
terms of the chicken supply.
"We are also working closely with
the government and the Ministry of
Agriculture to boost this business
for the purpose of meeting the local
demand and also helping the farmers."

SHE is believed to be the oldest South

Indian alive in the country.
According to the Then India Sanmarga
Ikya Sangam, they do not have any
record of anyone older than Deogi
Nair.
Considering her age, TISI Sangam's
former national president Sada Sivan
Naicker visited the 102-year-old at
Naitonitoni, Navua, last week.
He stepped down from his position at
the TISI Sangam on Tuesday, earlier
stating he would do so to contest the
September election under the National
Federation Party banner.
"I had always wanted to meet her on
behalf of our organisation and even

personally. It was a pleasure when I

finally met her and spoke to her," he
said.
"As far as the Sangam records are
concerned, she is the oldest South
Indian alive in the country. And it was
good to see that she's in good health
and well looked after by her daughters
and extended family members.
"We told our members some time back
to let us know if they are aware of any
South Indians who have crossed the
one century mark and are still alive but
nothing came up."

Indonesia To Assist In Fight

Against IUU Fishing

The Indonesian Government has

pledged its support to help Fiji in its
fight against illegal, unreported and
unregulated fishing (IUU). After being
warned and put on the Yellow Card
list of the European Union, the two
countries will now join hands in the
battle against IUU.
The President of Indonesia Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono and Fijian Prime
Minister Voreqe Bainimarama discussed
this issue during their bilateral meeting
in Nadi. On maritime cooperation, the
two Leaders committed to promoting
eco-tourism,
combating
illegal,
unreported and unregulated fishing,
marine conservation, and enhancing

capacity building cooperation useful

for the two sides. As part of common
efforts to enhance food security, Fiji
and Indonesia agreed to collaborate
closer on the processing/canning of fish
products including by enhancing the
participation of their respective small
and medium enterprises.
Both Leaders were pleased with
the signing by the two countries of
the MOU on Marine and Fishery
Cooperation to promote many aspects
of maritime cooperation. Fiji was
warned back in 2012 on the issue
as part of EUs to make sure that no
illegally caught fisheries products end
up on the EU market.

Bainimarama Blasts Australia As

'Selfish'

Fijian leader Voreqe Bainimarama

accused the global community on
Thursday of abandoning Pacific island
nations to "sink below the waves"
instead of tackling climate change,
singling out "selfish" Australia for
criticism.
Opening a regional summit, he said
there was "collective disappointment
and dismay" in the Pacific at the
failure to address climate change,
which scientists blame for rising seas
that threaten many low-lying island
nations.
"The rising sea levels caused by global
warming threaten the very existence
of some of our neighbours, Kiribati,
Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands", he
told the Pacific Islands development
forum (PIDF).
"[They] are already swamping the
coastal areas of many Pacific nations,
including Fiji.
"Yet if anything, the collective will of
the global community to adequately
address this crisis is receding", he
told the summit, where Indonesian
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono
was guest of honour.
Bainimarama noted "a distinct change

of rhetoric" from Australia on climate

change since conservative Prime
Minister Tony Abbott was elected last
year.
Abbott said earlier this month that he
would not adopt any climate policies
that would "clobber the economy".
"I appeal to Australia and other
countries not to behave selfishly over
the catastrophic prospect facing small
island developing states", Bainimarama
said.
"History will judge you harshly if
you abandon us to our apparent fate
of sinking below the waves because
you don't want to make the necessary
adjustment to your domestic policies."
Yudhoyono said climate change was
among the greatest challenges facing
the world and announced Indonesia
was allocating $20m to help minimise
its impact in the Pacific.
"Indonesia has a strong commitment
to broaden its network of co-operation
with PIDF countries in mitigating the
impact of climate change", he said.
Yudhoyono also said he wanted twoway trade between Indonesia and
Pacific island nations to triple to $1.0bn
in coming years.

Samoa Keen To Have Connection

To US Reopen With Fiji Help
Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa
Sailele Malielegaoi has shown interest
to have the Fiji-Apia-Los Angeles route
re-open, reported the Samoa Observer.
It is a possible opportunity to open up
the airway from Apia to Los Angeles
again, Tuilaepa said during the launch
of Suva-Apia-Suva direct flights on
Monday evening in Samoa.
There are discussions on it and
government (Samoan) is looking at
ways to push airlines to make it easy
for us to travel to US rather than what
we are doing now which is stupid.
Currently, Samoans have to fly to
Auckland, New Zealand to catch a
plane there and fly over Samoa going
to Los Angeles. And then they have to
fly over Samoa going to Auckland and
then backtrack to Samoa. Or they have
to do the same via Fiji.
Its a really stupid thing and not only
that but there is no connection flight
between us and Tonga, Tuilaepa said.
Abandoned flights
Tuilaepa was further quoted in the
article speaking about why Air New
Zealand abandoned the flights from
Apia to Los Angeles in the past.
I spoke with the management and I
explained to them why people didnt
take their flight from here to LA because
their seats are too small, he said.
When I sit in it, I have to sit sideways.
By the time you get there youll have a

hunchback.
New Zealand should have done
something about it but they say there
arent many people taking the flight.
The big aircraft are used from LA and
land in New Zealand whereas they give
us the smaller airplanes.
Lessons from Fiji Airways
Meanwhile, Tuilaepa congratulated the
Fiji Airways for their vision to initiate
the direct flights between the capitals.
He pointed out that Samoa should learn
from Fiji.
Fiji made plans prior to flying planes
here, Tuilaepa said.
But us, we brought airplanes first
and after we then looked at it if was
profitable. That ended with no profit
and its why we stopped.
Making Samoa accessible to multiple
gateways is key focus of government and
we are open to ideas to support this vision.
Fiji Airways commitment
Fiji Airways Group managing director/
chief executive, Stefan Pichler, said the
connection flight was a milestone.
We wouldnt be here if we didnt
have a serious interest in developing
Samoa, he said.
We try very hard to add value to
thousands in the Pacific by using Fiji
Link unlike other countries.
Mr Pichler said the connection means
more flights, more frequency, new
destination and more jobs.

Fijian Rural Development Learns

From Malaysia
Senior government officials from
the Ministries of Rural & Maritime
Development and National Disaster
Management,
Agriculture,
and
Fisheries and Forests are attending
a series of meetings and site visits in
Malaysia to learn some of Malaysias
best practices model in rural
development.
Officials attending this one week
meeting include the Minister for
Rural & Maritime Development and
National Disaster Management, Mr
Inia Seruiratu; Permanent Secretary for
Rural & Maritime Development and
National Disaster Management, Mr
Filipe Alifereti, Permanent Secretary
for Fisheries and Forests, Mr Inoke
Wainiqolo; Deputy Secretary for the
Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Uraia
Waibuta; the four (4) Divisional
Commissioners and two (2) Principal
Fisheries Officers.
The one week study tour covers a
myriad of issues that ranges from rural

development policy and planning;

project monitoring mechanism and
the success of cooperatives and small
medium enterprises to name a few.
Mr Alifereti said the study tour will
give the delegates the opportunity to
examine and discuss with Malaysian
counterparts some of the best practice
models that could be replicated in Fiji
to create wealth and raise the standards
of living with our rural and remote
communities.
The visit will also assist the Ministries
in revising its rural development
strategies and also develop new
ones to further enhance their roles as
the coordinating and implementing
agencies of rural development projects
in Fiji.
Mr Alifereti adds that the study tour
will also set the platform for future
collaboration and assistance between
rural development, agriculture and
fisheries and forestry sectors of the two
countries.

The Fiji Labour Party will launch its

campaign for the September 17 general
election this Saturday. Party leader
Mahendra Chaudhry said the campaign
will begin at their National Campaign
Centre in Vatuwaqa, Suva. FLPs
Election Theme Song, Its Time to
be Free will also be launched at the
ceremony, Chaudhry said.
He said both he and party president
Lavinia Padarath would speak on the
challenges facing the nation as Fiji
prepares to go to the polls. Many
questions are being asked about
the integrity and credibility of the

elections. We note that the European

Union has declined to send observers
because it is not satisfied with the
regimes proposed terms of reference
which compromise the independence
of observer missions, Chaudhry
said. He said concerns have also
been expressed by the voters on
the format of the ballot paper, the
one-day polling and the restrictive
environment in which the elections
are to be held, including curbs placed
on the media. FLP will also be
naming some of their candidates at
the launch.

Fiji will soon benefit from a new $2billion

Pacific Patrol Boat (PPB) program unveiled
by Australias Foreign Minister Julie Bishop
and Defence Minister David Johnston.
The program aims to significantly
strengthen security in the pacific
region says the Australian Government
website. The Pacific Patrol Boat
Program is an important pillar of the
Australian Governments commitment
to working with our regional partners
to enable cohesive security cooperation
on maritime surveillance, including in
fisheries protection and trans-national
crime, Bishop said. Defence Minister
Johnston said his ministry would replace
the current fleet of patrol boats for all
PPB members which included Fiji
because the current 22 patrol boats gifted
to 12 Pacific Island countries from 1987
to 1997 were now approaching their end
of service life. Defence will replace the
current fleet of patrol boats for all current
PPB members with the addition of a
new member, Timor-Leste (East Timor),
which has been invited to join the
program, evidence of Australias growing

defence cooperation program with that

country, Johnston said. This new
program will involve the construction
of more than 20 steel, all purpose
patrol vessels that will considerably
enhance the maritime security of our
Pacific and regional partners, he said.
Australia has a fundamental strategic
interest in the security and stability of
Pacific island nations. Johnston said
the rugged Australian-made patrol boats
are worth $594 million with through
life sustainment and personnel costs
estimated at $1.38 billion over 30 years.
In the coming months discussions will
be held with PPB states on the individual
allocation of patrol vessels. Replacement
patrol boats will be offered to all current
participating states including Papua New
Guinea, Tonga, Solomon Islands, Fiji,
Tuvalu, Kiribati, Samoa, Vanuatu, Federated
States of Micronesia, Palau, Republic of
Marshall Islands, Cook Islands and new
member Timor-Leste. Under the program,
Defence will undertake an open tender for
the procurement which includes an option
for ongoing sustainment and crew training.

Hindi Musical Hits From The

Past
Purani Yaadein, which will be held this
Sunday at the Suva Civic Centre, will
take Hindi soul music lovers on a walk
down memory lane.
The decision to revive His Masters
Orchestra was made during a chance
meet of old friends at the Holiday Inn
in Suva about two months ago.
"The last time we played together was
more than 20 years ago," said one of
the founding members of the group,
Dhruv Morris.
Morris, together with Binesh Sumar
and Shyam Kumar are some of the
original members of the Hindi show
band.
The 61-year-old said after key members
migrated for greener pastures overseas,
the rest of the group decided to call it
quits.
"It was a shame because we had really
worked hard to become one of the most
popular Hindi show bands around.
"When we were around, there was no
Vodafone Arena. We used to play at
places like the Suva Civic Auditorium
and State Theatre in Samabula.
"We even travelled West and performed
in Lautoka and the Swami Vivekananda
College hall in Nadi.
"In the 80s, live music and show bands
like ours used to draw huge crowds."
Keyboard player and co-founder of the
Hindi pop band, Ravi Shankar, said
the decision to put together a show
showcasing Hindi film hits from the
60s through to the 80s, was based on
the success of a similar event in 1995.
"We did this at the Suva Civic Centre
that year and the show was a sellout
because for a very small fee, movie
goers and romantics can hear all their
favourite songs in one show.
"The show will take patrons on
a musical journey with songs by
Hindi music greats like Kishore
Kumar, Mohammed Rafi and Lata
Mangeshkar."
Managing director of Procera Music
Mohammed Akeef, who also manages
the group, says he got involved in the
project because there was a vacuum in
the market for live Hindi music.
"People want to hear the old hits but
they also want to hear a new version
of the songs that mean something to
them," Akeef said.
"This music takes people back to their
childhood or to a special moment in
their life and I just thought it would be
a great idea to revive a group that was
very popular in the past at delivering
songs that are hardly played today by
a live band.
"To my knowledge, apart from Jimmy
Subhaydas' recent return to the music
scene, there are not many Hindi music
groups around that do full-on shows
like this. In the 80s and 90s, the Hindi

live music scene was booming.

"Apart from His Masters Orchestra,
there were groups like the Melody
Makers and Jugnus Orchestra.
"There is a huge difference between
bands that perform at gigs like
weddings and nightclubs and the
groups that hold shows.
"His Masters Orchestra have been at the
forefront of Hindi show business since
the 80s and I would like to urge people
to come out on Sunday and listen,
watch and appreciate a professional
show done by people who have a real
passion for live music."
For the youngest member of the group,
Anusha Amin, performing alongside
the elder statesmen of local Hindi
music is a dream come true.
"I come from a musical family, my
father Anandilal Amin is a well-known
musician in Ba and I grew up listening
to the old classics," the 20-year-old
University of the South Pacific student
shared.
"Because I grew up listening to
and appreciating these old songs, I
developed a passion for sharing this
with my generation and the younger
audiences out there. So being a member
of His Masters Orchestra gives me a
platform to do this and I am very proud
of the show that we're going to deliver
on Sunday."
His Masters Orchestra returns to
the sound stage in the country on
Sunday after more than two decades
in hibernation, however, the band has
continued in various forms around the
world courtesy of former founding
members who live in the United States
and Australia.
"Mahendra Nair has a band in the US
with the same name and Veer Chand
uses the name for his band that does
performances around Australia," said
keyboardist Shankar.
The Fiji version of the renowned
Hindi band that will perform on
Sunday includes male vocalists
Dhruv Morris, Vikash Reddy,
Rajesh Chand and Simon Kumar.
The female singers are Anusha Amin
and Harsha Mithal. Sanjay Ram will
sit behind the drums, Atish Prasad
will feature on the bass guitar and
Emmanuel Prasad on percussion via
the Octapad.
Kritil Kumar will play dholak and
former bassist Shyam Kumar takes on
lead guitar duties.
Ravi Shankar and Albert Prasad are the
two keyboard players in the group.
His Masters Orchestra's Purani Yaadein
kicks off at 7pm at the Suva Civic
Centre this Sunday June 22.
Organisers are looking at taking the
three-hour long show to the Western
and Northern divisions soon.

Teen Who Set Friend Alight

Denied Parole
A teenager who poured petrol over a
friend and set him on fire will remain
behind bars at least until November,
when his parole will be revisited.
Last week the Parole Board declined
to release Matt-Dillion Shannon, 19, as
he still posed a risk to the public.
Shannon is serving a sentence of three
years' jail for setting Hayden Calder
alight as he was held down at Shannon's
17th birthday party, in August 2011.
Mr Calder, then 16, was not feeling
well and had gone into a bedroom to lie
down. Shannon and three friends came
in and held him down as Shannon
threw petrol on him, and then lit him
up.
"It lit up the room and all I could see
were shadows of people laughing at
me," Calder told the Hawke's Bay
Today.
"No one came to help except one of my
friends, who helped put out the fire as I
ran out the door.
"The shirt had been burned on to my
skin, so when I ripped it off, it tore my
back off too."
The Parole Board acknowledged the
progress Shannon had made while in
prison.

He completed a six-month Drug

Treatment Unit programme in April.
"He acknowledged that when he
offended, he was dependent upon
cannabis," the parole board decision
said. "He now has strategies in place
for dealing with that."
The board's report said that Shannon
had "grown up" and taken responsibility
for what he did.
"For the first time he has been able to
talk about the issues in his background
which allowed him to offend in the
dreadful way that he did.
"He has undertaken counselling which
has assisted with this, and he is aware
that he can apply for ACC counselling
at an appropriate time.
"However we are not satisfied that he
has reached the point where his risk is
not undue."
The board supported a slow and careful
re-integration, including temporary
releases and taking part in the Release
for Work programme.
Shannon's sentence ends on September
11, 2015.
It is the second time his parole has been
declined. The Board will reconsider
parole for Shannon in November

Kenya's Main Airport In Nairobi

Closed Due To Body On Runway

Air traffic at Kenya's Jomo Kenyatta

International Airport was temporarily
suspended after a dead boy was found
on the runway, police say.
It is unclear whether the bruised body
was that of a stowaway or a street boy,
airport CID chief Joseph Ngisa said.
The airport was shut for about 40
minutes as police removed the body,
the airport authority said.
In November, the body of a stowaway
was found after a plane landed at the

airport, local media report.

The BBC's Caroline Karobia in
Nairobi says the nationality of the boy,
believed to be between the age of 12
and 15 years, is not yet known.
Police are trying to establish whether
he fell from a plane, or was a street boy
who had breached security by getting on
to the runaway and then died, she says.
The temporary suspension of flights
only affected the operations of one
airline.

The United States has carried out the

first two executions since a botched
lethal injection in Oklahoma in April,
after last-minute appeals were denied.
Marcus Wellons, 58, convicted of the
1989 kidnapping, rape and murder of
a 15-year-old girl, was put to death
shortly before midnight Tuesday in the
southern state of Georgia, a spokesman
for the prison system said.
In the second case, John Winfield, 43,
convicted of killing two women, was
executed in the central state of Missouri,
state prison system spokesman Mike
O'Connell said.
A third execution was also scheduled
for 6:00pm on Wednesday in the
southern state of Florida.
US states using the death penalty have
faced crises over shortages of lethal

R

$350

injection drugs after European suppliers

stopped supplying pentobarbital for
use in executions.
The shortages have prompted prison
departments in the 32 states that still
allow the death penalty to seek new
supply sources or new drug protocols.
In Oklahoma in April, Clayton
Lockett, a convicted killer and rapist,
was put to death by lethal injection in
a process that took 43 minutes, well
over the expected time of a little over
10 minutes.
He was seen writhing in pain in
a spectacle that drew widespread
condemnation, even from president
Barack Obama.
Since then each execution slated to
take place had been delayed as states
reviewed their execution procedures.

Lori Moore And Her New Boyfriend Lance Griffel Shot Dead At Her
High School Reunion By Her Ex-Husband, James Moore
LORI Moore was introducing her new
boyfriend Lance Griffel to her old
friends at their high school reunion last
Saturday when her ex-husband arrived
and shot the pair dead.
Moore, 33, and her new love Lance
Griffel, 36, were attending an East
Peoria Community High School
reunion in Illinois for the class of 1999
when James Moore, 40, calmly walked
in to the Fifth Quarter Sports Bar and
Pizzeria and shot them both in the head.
An off-duty FBI officer then shot the
gunman dead in front of about 100
startled witnesses about 8pm.
Ms Moore and Mr Griffel were rushed to
hospital where they were pronounced dead.
Ms Moore had filed for divorce from

her husband in March last year and it

was finalised two months later.
East Peoria Police Chief Dick
Ganschow told the Pekin Times that
had it not been for the quick thinking
of the FBI officer, the situation could
have been even more tragic.
Its very difficult to say. You can
play the what if game over and over
again, but I think its pretty clear in his
case the presence of this officer and
his ability to take very quick and very
decisive action prevented a further
tragedy, he said.
Ms Moore was clearly smitten by her
new beau, posting on Facebook earlier
this month a picture of the two and
calling him Sir Lancelot.

Girl Dies In Carmarthen Fire A

Year After Brother's Cot Death

A toddler died following a house fire a

year to the day after her six-month-old
brother died from suspected cot death.
The girl called Angel, three, died after
a blaze tore through her family home in
Carmarthen.
Events surrounding her death are
being investigated including why an
ambulance was unavailable to take her
to hospital.
Her mother Alice Smith, 24, remains
in hospital after being rescued from the
blaze by firefighters.
The fire happened on the first
anniversary of the little girl's brother
Jake's death.
Family friend Lisa Naether said: "We
were in total shock when we heard,
especially as it was the anniversary of
her baby brother's death."
Another friend Nicola Richards added:
"Alice was a great mother who was
especially close to Angel Jade - she
used to carry Angel everywhere.
"How can anyone get over losing both
their children?"
Neighbours called 999 after spotting
black smoke billowing from the family
home in Bryn Gorwel at 18:15 BST.
'Chaos'
Angel and her mother were rescued
by firefighters, while the girl's father

escaped by jumping from a window.

She was taken to the town's Glangwili
Hospital by police but was later
transferred to the University Hospital
of Wales in Cardiff where she died.

more than 20 minutes attempting to
revive Angel while they waited for an
ambulance to arrive.
He said he was told an ambulance took
40 minutes to arrive, by which time the
toddler had been taken to hospital by
police officers.
He has written to the Welsh Ambulance
Service asking why there was such a
long delay and where the ambulances
that cover the area were when the
incident was reported.
An ambulance service spokeswoman
said: "We are aware of this tragic
incident and are currently looking into
the details surrounding it."
It took fire crews almost four hours to
bring the fire under control.
A neighbour said she ran into the street
when she heard screaming.
She described the scene as "chaos" and
said a man jumped out of the window,
while a woman was carried out by a
firefighter.

Revenge ... Lori Moore and Lance Griffel were shot dead by Moores ex
husband at her high school reunion.

Child Finds Mummified Corpse

In Abandoned Home In Dayton,
Ohio

CHILDREN always dare themselves

to conquer their fears and then brag to
their mates how brave they are.
In this case, there is unlikely to be any
bragging after a child dared himself
to enter an abandoned house near his
home in the city of Dayton, Ohio.
The house appeared derelict, seemingly
abandoned. It was unfurnished; there
was a letter from the City of Dayton,
posted on May 11, 2013 stating that the
homeowner was in violation of the law
for not mowing his lawn.
When the boy gingerly stepped inside,
he would have thought the worst was
over. However, when he opened a
closet, the inquisitive boy ran for his
life.
Inside the closet was the mummified
corpse of the body of Edward Brunton,
who hanged himself with a belt in the
closet in 2009, Ken Betz, Montgomery
County Coroners Office director, told
WDTN.
Betz said that no-one had reported

Brunton missing. He was estranged

from his family and friends and had
bought the house just before his death
and had not met any of the neighbours.
The closet shielded the body Brunton,
who was in his late 40s when he hung
himself, from rapid decomposition,
animals and insects, leading it to be
mummified.
Because of the location where he
was found, it was relatively protected,
sunlight-protected,
temperatureprotected and low humidity, coroner
Kent Harshbarger told WDTN.
When the boy returned home he told
his mother, Michelle McGrath, about
what he saw. She went to investigate.
When I crossed the threshold of the
room, is when I smelled it, she said
and then called the police.
Authorities
found
identification
documents on the mummified corpse.
Bruntons estranged brother was able
to recognise him and confirmed who it
was.

Keeley And Terry Ford Experience A Very Unlucky Honeymoon At

The Melia Caribe Tropical Hotel In Bavaro, The Dominican Republic
KEELEY and Terry Ford couldnt wait
to experience their dream honeymoon
in the idyllic Caribbean islands.
The pair forked out $15,000 for their
luxurious wedding and honeymoon
package in Bavaro in the Dominican
Republic. But unfortunately, they ended
up with some rather unwanted extras, and
have now won a $90,000 payout from the
travel company they booked with.
Keeley, 45, said she fell violently ill
just hours after saying her vows and
was stuck in bed for days. It wasnt
long before new husband Terry became
sick too, along with five other members
of their wedding party, as reported.
That included Keeleys two children,
who were 11 and 15 at the time, and
her parents.
She suspects that food poisoning was
to blame, claiming that almost raw
food was served at the four-star Melia
Caribe Tropical Hotel where they were
staying.
I was concerned about some of the
food which was being served in the
restaurant, Keeley said. I remember

eating a burger and the middle was pink

and did not seem to be cooked properly,
so I sent it back to the kitchen.
But then things got even worse a
hurricane hit the island, causing flash
flooding.
As we were finishing our meals on
our wedding day, a hurricane hit which
meant we all had to return to our rooms
to take cover. Of course, this could
never have been prevented but when
we got up the next day the hotel was
a complete mess, yet the staff did not
seem to be in a hurry to clean it up.
Over the following two days we all
started to feel ill with each of us unable
to leave our rooms for long because
of sickness and diarrhoea. It was an
absolute nightmare.
Travel company Thomas Cook has
now paid out $90,000 to the couple
over the incident, which occurred in
2009, according to the couples law
firm Irwin Mitchell.
A spokesperson for Thomas Cook
said: The health and safety of our
customers is of paramount importance.

Extreme Floods Cause Landslide

In Brazilian City Natal Days
Before World Cup Game

WHILE the USA battled it out with

Ghana in their World Cup match in the
Brazilian city of Natal, just across the
city landslides have destroyed roads
and homes.
Two days of near non-stop rain
have dumped a months worth of
precipitation on Natal.
At least 25 homes are reported to be
destroyed after flash flooding. The
downpour, which began in the northeastern Brazilian city last Friday, and
abated only on Sunday, dumped as
much rain in 50 hours as is usually seen
during the entire month of June. There
are no injuries confirmed.
Incredible drone footage has captured
the extent of the devastation.
Natals City Hall declared a flood alert
on Saturday, and evacuated dozens of

residents as a precaution in the Mae

Luiza neighbourhood in the citys
west. News reports showed images
of residents wading through kneedeep waters as others pushed cars
submerged up to the door handles.
Additional reports showed a huge
crater cutting across a street in a
residential neighbourhood.
Floods can often be deadly in Brazil,
where intense rains, chaotic urban
planning and garbage-filled drainage
pipes sometimes result in landslides
that bury entire neighbourhoods.
Poor neighbourhoods, often built up
steep hillsides, tend to be hit worst by
such flooding.
The southern Brazilian regions of
Parana and Mato Grosso do Sul have
also been hit by recent floods.

We extend our apologies to Mr and

Mrs Ford following their illness while
staying at the Meli Caribe Tropical
Hotel in the Dominican Republic
in 2009, and confirm that we have
reached an agreement with their legal
representatives.
Thomas Cook closely audits all of the

hotels to which it operates to ensure

that only the very highest health and
hygiene standards are in place. We
would like to assure customers that
incidents of this type are rare, as we
work closely with all our hotel partners
to ensure that only the very highest
hygiene standards are maintained.

Homework Ban Debated By

Councilors In Swedish City Of
Hallstahammar

A SWEDISH city council is considering

instating a total ban on homework,
after some members suggested pupils
should learn everything they need to in
school hours.
The proposed ban came up for debate
by authorities in the central Swedish
city of Hallstahammar on Monday.
The
left-wing
organisation
Vnsterpartiet suggested the change,
which is strongly opposed by Education
Minister Jan Bjrklund of the Liberal
Peoples Party. If this proposal is
passed, I will take the initiative to
change school laws so that cities will
not be able to butt in and affect this
kind of pedagogical decision, Mr
Bjrklund said.
Christina Aspenryd, who chairs
Hallstahammars
children
and
education board remains open to

containing learning to school hours.

We think its an interesting idea, and
one that should be investigated further
to see if its possible for Hallstahammar
to become the first homework-free
municipality in Sweden, she said.
The benefits of homework are a
persistent source of controversy.
A 15-year British study published in
2012 demonstrated a link between
homework and achieving better results
in English, maths and science. The
research was conducted by academics
from Oxford University and the
University of London. It tracked
around 3000 children from pre-school
to the age of 14.
The outcomes ran counter to earlier
research that showed only a relatively
modest link between homework and
performance at high school.

We all have a duty to prevent fraud and

When you immigrate to Canada,
you do not have to hire someone to

is. The results of these scams can
include:

computer viruses.
Remember:
No one can guarantee you a job or

a visa to Canada.
Only officers at Canadian embassies,
high commissions and consulates
can decide to issue a visa.
Processing fees are the same at all
Canadian visa offices around the

local currency on official exchange
rates. They are the same amount as
fees in Canadian dollars.
You usually pay fees for Canadian
government services to the
Receiver General for Canada,

something different.
Canadian visa offices will never:

Fake websites and other Internet scams
It is easy for criminals to copy a
real website or build one that looks
professional. Websites may claim to be
official Government of Canada sites or
their partners. Others may claim to offer
special immigration deals or guaranteed
high-paying jobs. They do this to trick
people into paying them money.
Some of these sites may try to get you
to give them your private information.
This could be used to steal your identity.
Here are some things to watch for:
CICs website address is www.
cic.gc.ca. If even one letter is
different, that means its a different
website. All Government of
Canada websites end in .gc.ca
(for example, www.canada.gc.ca).
If the website claims to offer
special deals to people who want to
immigrate, be careful. Do not pay
for offers of guaranteed entry into

supposed to be cooked in a fryer. Most
people do not own a fryer. Im going
with the safer cooking method, to avoid
the hassle of handling hot grease, thus
avoiding injury or fire.

You will have to do them in increments
of 10.
REMEMBER
CELERY
AND
CARROT STICKS!
Add the amount of Franks Red Hot

Critical Care Tower At Surrey Memorial Hospital Officially Opens

Health Minister Terry Lake, along with
local MLAs and representatives from
Fraser Health and the Surrey Memorial
Hospital Foundation, officially opened
Surrey Memorial Hospitals critical
care tower, which is a part of the
hospitals $512-million redevelopment
and expansion project.
Thanks to this new facility, healthcare professionals will be able to deliver
the best-possible care for families in a
larger, modern environment with more
beds, space, equipment and staff, said
Lake. The critical care tower will go
a long way in meeting the health-care
needs of the rapidly growing Fraser
Valley.
The new eight-storey tower creates
an additional 151 beds for Surrey
Memorial, increasing the capacity
by 30%, to 650 beds and adds an
additional 650 direct care staff and
over 300 clinical support staff.
Residents of Surrey and other Fraser
Health communities now have an
improved health-care environment
that is truly patient-centred. said Dr.
David Ostrow, Fraser Health interim
president and CEO. Eighty per cent
of the tower rooms are single-patient

for more privacy and better infection

prevention and control. Each room
includes a family zone with a sofa
bed or recliner so families can stay
close to their loved ones.
The tower will double the capacity of
the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)
for high-risk babies and includes B.C.s
first Ronald McDonald Family Room
where moms and dads can take a break
while being just steps away from their
child in hospital.
The tower also has expanded stroke
and intensive care units as well as other
specialized units.
There is an expanded hospital laboratory
that uses new robotics and automated
technology, and a new neonatal and
paediatric pharmacy right in the NICU,
the first of its kind in Canada.
Surrey Memorial Hospital has a
proud history of providing exceptional
care for patients at every stage of life,
from newborns to seniors. Thanks
to the support of the community and
the province, our staff and physicians
now have a state-of-the-art facility to
serve the growing needs of patients
and families from across the region for
many years to come," said Ron Knight,

Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation

board chair.
The University of British Columbias
faculty of medicine will be located
within the tower and will allow Fraser
Health to expand Surrey Memorials
role as a clinical academic campus. In
partnership with UBC, a new simulation
lab includes life-like manikins which
can be used by physicians, staff and

students to practice clinical skills and

teamwork.
In October 2013, Fraser Health,
together with the Government of B.C.,
officially opened Surrey Memorials
new emergency department, Canadas
second-largest and the provinces
busiest, with more than 117,000 visits
last year, an increase of more than 17%
from the year previous.

Witnesses called police after seeing

the suspect running down the street,
brandishing an axe at another man
Vancouver police spent 11 hours in a
standoff with an empty house Monday,
after an unidentified man reportedly
brandishing an axe escaped unnoticed
out the back door.
Witnesses reported seeing a 25-year-old
man running down the street, carrying
the axe and threatening another man on
Main Street near East 51st Avenue at

around 8:30 a.m. PT.

But by the time police arrived, the
suspect had returned to a duplex on
East 51st Avenue and was standing
outside in the garden.
According to a statement released by
police on Monday night, officers went
to the duplex but upon seeing the police,
the suspect ran inside the building.
Police then evacuated everyone from
the home, shut down several blocks of
Main Street south of 49th Avenue and

surrounded the property while they

attempted to negotiate with the man.
Some 11 hours later, without any sign
of contact, a police emergency response
team finally entered the building
only to find the suspect had likely
escaped out the back of the building as
soon as he saw police earlier in the day.
Speaking before the team entered the
building, Sgt. Randy Fincham said
police believed the suspect may have
hurt someone, but the alleged victim

had already disappeared when police

arrived at the scene.
"We had one report that the person with
the axe was possibly chasing the other man
near or at this bus stop. We haven't had this
person phone 911 yet," said Fincham.
"We haven't been able to speak with this
alleged victim, so we're hoping if there's
somebody out there that saw this take
place this morning, or had a role in this,
that they call us so we can speak to them
and determine what's happening."

Saputo Drops Chilliwack Cattle Sales Milk Over Cow Abuse Video
Saputo, producer of Dairyland dairy
products, says it is no longer accepting
milk from Chilliwack Cattle Sales, a
B.C. farm where eight employees were
caught on video beating cattle.
The move comes after Mercy for
Animals Canada released undercover
video last week, showing dairy cows
being whipped and beaten with
chains and canes, as well as punched
and kicked, at Canada's largest dairy
farm.
It also showed cows suffering from
open wounds and injuries, and being
lifted by their necks with chains and
tractors and prompted 100,000
people to sign a change.org petition
calling for Saputo to take action.
In a statement released Monday, Saputo
said it is leading the charge for reform
in animal treatment.
"Since Saputo learned of the animal
abuse at the farm in British Columbia
from which horrific images of cattle
mistreatment were captured, the
company has used its position as
Canada's largest milk processor to
ensure the situation is being addressed
and that such reprehensible behaviour
. . . does not occur in the future," said

the statement.
The Montreal-based company said
it has reached out to the province's
minister of agriculture as well as the
B.C. Dairy Association, the B.C. Dairy
Council and the B.C. Farm Industry
Review Board.
"Saputo has taken the lead in bringing
industry stakeholders together behind
a common goal: to ensure immediate
consequences for those involved and
enforceable legal measures to prevent
future animal abuse," it said.
It said it also supports the
recommendation of the B.C. Society
for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals that the Canadian Code of
Practice for the Care and Handling of
Dairy Cattle, published in 2009, be
adopted into B.C. law.
In the wake of the video, the B.C.
Milk Marketing Board suspended
milk pickup from the B.C. farm, but
reinstated it a day later following
a report from veterinarians and
assurances from Chilliwack Cattle
Sales it was complying with B.C.
SPCA orders.
In announcing its action, Saputo noted
that it does not own or operate any dairy

farms in British Columbia or anywhere

else in Canada and, like all dairy
processors in Canada, is required by
law to purchase milk from provincial
milk marketing boards.
"While we do not own the farms, we
care deeply about the way the milk we
sell is produced. We will not accept
milk from the B.C. Milk Marketing
Board supplied by this farm until we
are fully satisfied that strict animal
welfare practices are in place," it said.
SPCA still investigating
Chilliwack Cattle fired eight employees
after the group Mercy for Animals
Canada took the video to authorities.
The SPCA has recommended criminal
charges against them but to date no
charges have been laid and nothing has
been proven in court.
The farm's owner, Jeff Kooyman, has
described the video as "horrifying to
watch" and said he didn't know what
got into the young men seen kicking,
punching and beating the animals with
pipes.
Kooyman has said the dairy operation
the country's largest, with more than
3,500 animals will put in security
cameras that will be monitored and

would work with the SPCA on better

training for staff.
In a statement Monday, Kooyman
invited representatives from Saputo to
visit the farm in person.
"We would like to extend an open
invitation to Saputo to come and view
the farm and level of animal care for
themselves," said Kooyman. "This is a
family farm started in the 1950s and we
care deeply for our animals. We would
love the opportunity to show this to
Saputo and what measures have been
put in place to ensure animal welfare."
Mercy for Animals has said the
company failed to provide adequate
training or respond to the concerns
raised by its undercover member
before the video's release.
It rejected claims by farm co-owner
Jeff Kooyman that none of the owners
knew about the abuse.
B.C. SPCA enforcement officer Marcie
Moriarty said Chilliwack Cattle Sales
has so far been co-operating with its
investigation.
In 2008, Chilliwack Cattle Sales was
cleared of charges relating to the
transport of injured cows.

What Language You Speak Or Your Age Could Affect Your Search
For A Place To Rent In Metro Vancouver

Imagine living in a shoddy, mouldy

building or facing discrimination from
potential landlords when youre trying
to rent a place. Its a reality tens of
thousands of people are dealing with in
Metro Vancouver.
A new UBC study looking at housing
around the region suggests one in six
people experience discrimination from
potential landlords.
Specifically, if English isnt your first
language, you happen to be gay or
your credit history stinks, theres a
good chance you could face challenges
finding a place to rent.

Dr. Penny Gurstein with UBC says

this comes down to a shortage of rental
housing in the region.
We need to be encouraging a greater
range of different kinds of housing,
she says. Right now, we have very
few options.
Apart from the discrimination issues,
the survey found one in five renters
deal with mould or other dangerous
materials in their home.
Mould, other kinds of health issues
were significant, Gurstein tells us.
It makes it difficult for people to
actually be living in certain kinds of

accommodations.
She says bed bugs are an example of
such conditions.
Vancouver Councillor Geoff Meggs is
also vice chair of the Metro Vancouver
Housing Committee. He says while hes
not surprised by the numbers on renter
discrimination, theyre concerning.
Hes calling on the province to
bring on more protection for renters.
Hes calling on the province to
enforce existing rules to protect
renters. The province should take
this findings and see if its really
enforcing the human rights act and

the rental tenancy laws appropriately

and providing enough support to
tenants. It doesnt sound like it from
this result.
At the moment, its quite a difficult
job for a tenant to take up any questions
against a landlord. Its a complaintbased written system with very little
oversight, he tells us.
Meggs says the existing system has lax
enforcement. He adds people looking
for a place to live can use the renters
database on the City of Vancouver
website to see if a given property has a
history of violations.

Evacuations have begun in Claresholm,

Alta., where flooding has reached
some homes.
One of several communities under flood
threat in southern Alberta started evacuating
residents from their homes Wednesday as
rain continued to pour in much of the region.
The town of Claresholm said overland
flooding had reached some homes and
some sewers were starting to back up.
There is no river close to the town of
3,800 about 130 kilometres south of
Calgary. The nearest waterway, Willow
Creek, is at least five kilometres away
from the main townsite.
Town spokeswoman Karine Wilhauk
said residents whose homes were
affected were being offered shelter at the
arena. The fire department was helping
those who couldn't make it on their own.
We have some homes that are
surrounded by water. We also have some

homes that are actually underwater, so

we're trying to evacuate those people to
our reception centre, Wilhauk said.
We're asking everyone else to just
stay off the streets. We're just trying to
deal with this situation. We don't want
to have any more problems.
Wilhauk said it had been raining on
and off since Monday afternoon,
but problems started after a heavy
downpour early Wednesday that was
coming down in sheets.
The rain had subsided since then, she said,
so we're hoping our system is going to
catch up. Once we get to that point where
we feel like it's not getting worse, we're
going to try to start pumping water.
All schools were closed but students
writing diploma exams were being bused
from the evacuation centre to their schools.
The flooding comes as Alberta prepares
to mark the one-year anniversary of the

2013 flood. In total, 100,000 people

had to flee their homes in southern
Alberta last June.
Communities hit the hardest in that
flood including Canmore, Calgary
and High River are further to the
north of the area currently experiencing
high water and are so far fine.
Claresholm Resident Phyllis Faulkner
told radio station CHQR she watched
as water poured into her basement, just
as it did last year.
I'm standing there. The water's
running in and I'm screaming at the
top of my lungs, going, 'I can't stop it. I
can't stop it,' she said.
I'm going to lose everything again
my brand-new furnace is under water
again. My brand-new hot-water tank is
under water again.
They're done. They're toast.
The Blood reserve, the town of

Cardston and Lethbridge County were

also preparing residents for possible
evacuations due to rising river levels.
States of emergency were also in effect in
the Municipal District of Willow Creek,
Crowsnest Pass and Medicine Hat,
where the city was warning residents in
a handful of neighbourhoods that they
might have to leave their homes in the
next 48 hours.
The city said it was expecting fewer
evacuations than 2013 when about 10,000
people had to head for higher ground. But
it warned that every flood is unique.
In the city of Lethbridge, there was no
state of emergency, but the Oldman
River valley was closed to traffic and
people were being advised to stay
away from riverbanks because they
could be unstable. Sandbagging was
underway at the water treatment plant
and a handful of other areas at risk.

Immigration Bill Facing Challenge By Human Rights Advocates

Three human rights groups are
planning to launch a legal challenge of
a proposed immigration bill that would
allow the federal government to strip
dual nationals convicted of offences
such as terrorism of their Canadian
citizenship.
Amnesty International, the Canadian
Association of Refugee Lawyers and
the B.C. Civil Liberties Association
are scheduled to announce their plans
during a conference call with reporters
on Thursday, although the actual
lawsuit will have to wait until Bill
C-24 becomes law.
The Conservative government's bill
would impose new requirements to
obtain citizenship and make it easier
for the government to revoke it.
Under the proposed law, dual citizens
who are convicted of treason,
terrorism or espionage could lose
their citizenship. The law could apply
in cases in which those citizens are
convicted in foreign courts, and it could
also apply to people born in Canada if
they also have citizenship elsewhere,

Bill C-24 would expand grounds for stripping Canadian citizenship

such as through their parents.
Currently, someone may be stripped
of Canadian citizenship for attaining it
through false representations.
The advocacy groups behind the
forthcoming lawsuit argue the
proposed law is unconstitutional. They
say giving the government the power
to revoke people's citizenship is the
same as banishing them into exile.
"In Amnesty International's view, the
proposed new revocation provisions
are divisive and buy into and promote
false and xenophobic narratives about
'true' Canadians and others, which
equate foreignness with terrorism,"
says a report released last week by
Amnesty International Canada.
The groups argue the current bill,
which allows the government to rely Immigration Minister Chris Alexander
on convictions in foreign countries, has fiercely defended the proposed law,
does not include enough safeguards to insisting Canadians support the idea
of stripping citizenship from people
protect Canadians.
Opposition MPs and other advocacy convicted of war crimes or terrorism.

crimes, that they committed human

rights abuses, that they committed war
crimes," Alexander told Parliament last
week.
"And yes, Canadians find it entirely
acceptable that we should revoke
the citizenship of dual nationals for
terrorism, spying or treason."

When Candice Fife saw red, swirling

clouds through the kitchen window
of her Angus home, she immediately
herded her two young children and
father into the basement.
Just as she closed the basement door,
a two-by-four shot through her kitchen
window, slicing into the space where
she stood just moments before.
The house was shaking. The noise was
just deafening. It sounded like a freight
train, Ms. Fife said. It was almost like
a hollow sound, you know when your
ears are plugged. It felt like that.
Miraculously, no one was seriously
injured in the tornado that ripped
through the subdivision Tuesday
evening, lopping the top floors
and roofs off houses and strewing
mattresses, sheds and fences across
backyards. The mayor declared a state
of emergency after the tornado hit.
Im still in shock I think, said
June Lais, 63, who lives in a home
on Stonemount Crescent, one of the

resting on it was visible from the road.

At this point, now that we know all
the residents are safe, their property is
our main concern, said Kelly Daniels,
Ontario Provincial Police constable
with the Nottawasaga detachment.
The tornado, with wind speeds near
180 kilometres an hour, damaged up
to 100 homes and left 300 homeless,
she said. Those affected are either
staying with friends or family or at the
community centre.
The main damage occurred along a
one-kilometre stretch in a subdivision.
In front of me, Im seeing a swing set
thats tangled up around patio furniture
with a dryer on top of it. Thats just not
something you would normally see,
Const. Daniels said, standing in the
backyard of the hardest-hit homes.
She pointed to a home with smashed
windows and said police think it was
hit by a roof from two houses away.
The roof is now sitting in the backyard.
Along with it are twisted bicycles,
mattresses and broken fences, debris
that marks the tornados path that tore
through less than 24 hours earlier.
Green grass and manicured gardens
peeked out from underneath piles
of patio furniture, eavestroughs and
overturned basketball nets.
One sign, buried in the debris read,
Life is not measured by the number
of breaths we take, but by the moments
that take our breath away.
For Tannen Roy, recalling Tuesdays
tornado brings tears to her eyes. She
was driving from Barrie to Angus
when the storm hit.
My heart started pounding, like oh my
God, oh my God, Im going right into it,
she said. It got really bad. I could hardly

see in front of me. I would have to basically

get off my seat a little bit and look straight
down and I could kind of see the lines and
two headlights in front of me.
But instead of pulling over, she thought
of her two daughters, ages nine and
11, who were at home with Ms. Roys
boyfriend.
I had to get to my girls, she said with
tears in her eyes. [I was] just thinking,
they need me. I cant go now.
The drive was so tense that on Wednesday,
she still had a cramp in her leg.
Despite the presence of portable toilets
in the street, generators in driveways
and houses with the tops lopped off,
the community appeared calm on
Wednesday. On Stonemount Crescent,
neighbours congregated on driveways
and front porches while children rode
bicycles on sidewalks and played
soccer on front lawns.
The community is home to a mixture
of seniors, young families and people
who work in Barrie, Toronto or at
nearby Canadian Forces Base Borden.
Theres nothing you can do now
Just pick up the pieces and be thankful
no one was injured, said Randy Harris,
a retired mail carrier whose roof and
car were damaged. Damage is done.
Its all repairable.
The communitys MP, Dr. Kellie
Leitch, and MPP Jim Wilson stopped
by the community Wednesday. Premier
Kathleen Wynne announced she will
visit the area in the coming days.
Building inspectors were still walking
through roped-off homes Wednesday.
While the extent of the damage is
still hard to assess, Const. Daniels
said damage costs are absolutely
estimated to be in the millions.

hardest hit communities in Angus,

about an hours drive north of Toronto.
Ms. Lais recalled sitting in her kitchen
Tuesday, chatting with her husband
who just returned home from work.
She was keeping an eye on the weather
and noticed that the heavy rain falling
in her backyard started twirling.
Next, she saw the wind lift her
neighbours shed up in the air, where it
burst apart.
When we saw the shed it was time
to move, she said. All I could do
was hug my husband. I said Im so
frightened.
On Wednesday, she surveyed her streets
damage from her front porch, where
she sat with sunglasses on her head, a
flashlight resting by her side she had no
power and sipping a lime Diet Coke.
Across the street, one house was
missing its top floor, another its entire
roof. One home had an entire wall
ripped off. The bedroom was exposed
to the outdoors and a bed with pillows

Punishment Or Positive
Discipline?
Continued From Last Week
Manners to ransom!
Just getting at the kids to say please
wasnt working theyd just repeat it
mechanically after me and I felt like
they didnt mean it at all. So now if
they dont say please, Ive taught them
that Ill clear my throat once to remind
them, and if they still dont remember,
they wont get what theyre asking for,
for ten minutes. It might seem harsh
but it worked so well I only had to do it
for a couple of weeks! Gail, Mum to
three kids, all over 6
What's your secret?
How do you help your kids remember
their manners?
House Rules
How many adults can put their hands
on their heart and say they love living
by rules? But, as restrictive as it might
sound, putting some House Rules in
place for your children could make
your home environment more relaxing
at last the kids know exactly what is
expected of them, with no more thats
not fair! or but Dad lets us do it!
House Rules can be pretty general,
such as no shouting or no swearing.
Whats important is that everyone
in the house agrees to stick to them.
Individual discipline problems, such
as bad behaviour at mealtimes, might
be better dealt with in a Reward Chart,
which tailors a programme of rules
more to the child or children.
Giving House Rules a try in your home
Decide on ten realistic rules which
you and your child agree you can
stick to.
Write the rules out and stick them
on your fridge for all to see, near
the Reward Chart. Use pictures
or symbols for younger children.
Try to write your expectations in
a positive way where possible, for
example, 'everyone must speak
politely' instead of 'no swearing';
and 'put toys in box at the end of
the day' instead of 'dont make a
mess'.
Refer to these rules when youre
going about your daily routine, and
remember to praise your children
when they do follow the House
Rules.
Be consistent, if you change the
rules your child may feel cheated
and break them.
If a rule is broken, remind your
child what it is - remember, no
swearing is one of our house
rules, or you might consider some
form of discipline, for example the
Naughty Step Technique.
By using this technique you are
sending a message loud and clear to all
the family: these are the boundaries,
dont cross them!

5 to 7 year olds
This age respond to a larger number
of steps up to 20 but youll need
to make sure you still recognize the
halfway mark with a small treat like an
activity at home or a favourite movie.
Use the chart to encourage anything
from good listening, to working with
siblings or just remembering to say
please, but remember to give your
child clear boundaries and goals for
her behaviour House Rules can really
help here, and the Naughty Step can be
a good deterrent, if you need one.
Let your child help chose the final
reward, and make sure she receives it
promptly, so she remembers just what
she was working for.
Reward Chart or Reward Tower?
After five or ten stickers, the parents
should give a final goal or reward to
aim for, like an outing. With a large
family, each child could have their
own chart. Alternatively, a joint chart
might help combat sibling rivalry as
the kids will have to work together to
achieve a common goal. Older children
might appreciate something a little
different from their younger siblings; a
reward tower or jar given to the child
with three marbles already inside and
the chance to earn more marbles with
good behaviour followed by a treat of
their choice when the jar is full. Try to
avoid using sugary treats or other food
as a reward - outings are the best (and
healthiest) option.
The Reward Chart should have specific
categories written on it (using pictures
or symbols for younger children) such
as a clean plate, a tidy room, and
the child will be given a sticker, token
or coupon whenever they achieve
these goals. Reward towers are more
flexible, rewarding the older child
when they respond well to a situation,
and working in conjunction with the
House Rules.
Ideas for Reward Charts
If they love drawing, make a dotto-dot chart (there are plenty of free
dot-to-dots you can download from
the Internet), allowing one line to
be drawn in for good behaviour, or
erased for bad behaviour. Similarly,
create a colour-by-numbers chart
where each child has a colour and a
picture will emerge once the chart
has been filled in. These two charts
in particular encourage sibling
cooperation.
The reward box could be a
cardboard box filled with rubber
snakes or little balls - or anything,
really - which the child can fish out
with a net each time they are wellbehaved. Four snakes and they
qualify for a treat!
Mad mornings? Use categories
like 'brushed my teeth', 'put my

31

Coloring

clothes on' and 'made my bed' in

a morning reward chart alongside
a strict morning routine. Clean the
chart off each night and give the
kids a sticker for each activity they
do on time when they get up, so
you get out of the door feeling less
stressed!
Dont feel daunted if these charts sound
too much like hard work. Making them
should be fun for you and the kids and
the benefits of the reward system will
become immediately apparent as soon
as you start using them.

Eat Balanced Diet To Prevent

Hearing Loss

Every time you hit the dance floor to

the sound of loud music, you may risk
losing your capacity to hear. But those
with a substandard diet could be more
vulnerable.
"People with healthy diets who eat
adequate fruit and vegetables, have
better hearing thresholds than people
with a poor diet, according to large
population databases," Colleen Le
Prell, professor at Florida University,
was quoted as saying.
Studies on animals have shown that
dietary supplements such as vitamins
A, C, E and magnesium can prevent
hearing loss by reducing inflammation

and swelling and increasing the blood

supply to the inner ear.
Results are now expected next month
of two recent clinical trials in humans
that have studied whether dietary
supplements and a new drug can
protect hearing after exposure to a loud
noise.
This may mean we will be able to
protect our ears by popping a vitamin
pill before going out clubbing, as
reported.
However, experts warned that however
effective a pill turns out to be, noise
avoidance is the best strategy to prevent
hearing loss.

Fat-Burning Exercises For A Very

Flat Tummy

If you thought only crunches can give you washboard abs, think again. Here
are some fat-burning exercises that are even better.
Losing fat on the belly is the hardest,
they say. And when you want to
strengthen your core and lose the flab,
most probably what comes to mind
are crunches and sit-ups. But recent
research has found that exercises that
are meant for the whole body can
actually workout the core muscles
better than the designated exercises for
your abs.
Strengthening your core muscles is
important because a fat belly can
lead to many lifestyle diseases, while
a flat one not only takes care of all
that, but invariably, makes look you
attractive too. These exercises are a
different take on familiar ones. Each of
these moves stimulates and tightens the
core muscles while burning calories.
Dumb-bells
Take an exercise mat and sit on it. Now
stretch your feet out in front of you.
Keep them around three feet apart.
Take a pair of dumbbells in your hands
and hold them near your shoulders.
Keep your back straight. Contract
your stomach muscles and push your
arms straight up. Return to the starting
position and repeat ten to 15 times.
Cheers for the chair
Take a chair and sit on it while
keeping your spine straight. Hold the
edge of the seat. Now engage your
core and use the stomach muscles to
bring your toes (pointing to the floor)
two to four inches off the floor. Hold
for at least three to five seconds then
lower your feet down. Repeat for a
few minutes.
Try this out
Begin this one by standing with your
feet apart a little more than hip-width
apart. Take a dumb-bell and hold it at
chest level with both hands. Now, while

you bend your knees, lower yourself.

Go as far as you can your elbows
should be inside your knees. All the
while, work your abdominal muscles,
contract them, and use that strength to
lower your butt. Keep repeating these
squats at least 10-1 5 times.
Lunge!
This is a lunge with a slight variation.
Begin by standing with your feet
together. Lunge back with your right
leg as you bend your knees at right
angles. Now reach right hand to
left foot. Then go back to standing
position. Now, lunge the right leg back
and do the exercise again. After ten
repetitions, switch sides.
Push-ups
This one is a variation of push-ups. Go
to the beginning position. Now slowly
lift your right arm and touch your left
shoulder with your right hand. Then go
back to touching the floor. Now, do the
same with your other arm left arm
and right shoulder and back on the floor.
Then, touch your left hand to your right
thigh, and go back to the main position.
Then touch your left thigh with your
right arm. Repeat all four touches at
least five to eight times each.
Squat for strength
Begin your squat, arms akimbo, and
get both your knees bent at 90 degrees.
Generally squats are considered to be
an important exercise for developing
core strength while working the legs
and buttocks. Now, engage your core
muscles to push your body up to the
starting position. The thrust you need
to raise your body up will work to burn
your stomach fat. Do this at least eight
to 10 times for each leg.

Eating Breakfast Helps Burn

Calories: Study

Breakfast is often said to be the most

important meal of the day, yet many
people are still shunning it in favour of
fasting. But new research suggests that
people who eat breakfast burn more
calories and have tighter blood sugar
control.
The University of Bath study examined
the effect of daily breakfast compared
to morning fasting on energy balance.
The research was conducted by
splitting people into two groups, the
"fasting" group and a "breakfast" group
and studying them for six weeks. The
"fasting" group consumed no calories
until 12 p.m each day and the 'breakfast'
group ate 700 calories before 11 a.m.
Those who ate breakfast experienced
little impact on snacking or portion
sizes or a change in their resting
metabolism, contrary to popular belief.
However, they were likely to expend

more energy, around 442 calories, by

being active, mainly in the morning
after eating.
James Betts of the University of Bath's
Department of Health was the principal
investigator in the study, published
in leading nutrition journal American
Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
"The main finding from our study is
that people who eat breakfast burn
more calories," said Betts.
"Most people would think this is
because of reduced snacking and
increased metabolic rate but actually
this is due to moving around. They
were more active during the period that
they had eaten breakfast. People moved
around if they had been fed and there
are many benefits to being active."
As the day went on, those who ate
breakfast experienced better blood sugar
control compared to those who had fasted.

Four Tomatoes A Day May

Reduce Kidney Cancer Risk:
Study

Love tomatoes? You have more reasons

to relish them as a tomato-rich diet may
lower kidney cancer risk, especially in
case of women.
Women who eat more tomatoes or other
lycopene-containing fruits and vegetables
may have a lower risk of developing
kidney cancer, a study suggests.
"The amount of lycopene in the diet of
the women who consumed lycopene at
the highest level in the study would be
equal to eating four tomatoes daily,"
study researcher Won Jin Ho, a medical
resident at Case Western Reserve
University in Ohio, was quoted as
saying.
Lycopene is an antioxidant that also
gives tomato, watermelon, grapefruit
and papaya its reddish colour.
In the new study, the researchers looked
at nearly 92,000 post-menopausal

women.
The amount of micronutrients including
lycopene in the women's diets was
estimated from the information they
provided on questionnaires when they
enrolled in the study.
During the study period, 383 women
were diagnosed with kidney cancer.
The results showed that only lycopene
was associated with a lower kidney
cancer risk.
Women who consumed the highest
amount of lycopene had a 45 percent
lower risk of kidney cancer compared
with those who ate the lowest amount,
the study noted.
"It is likely that the women received
lycopene not just from tomatoes but
also from tomato sauces and other
fruits that contain lycopene," Ho
commented.

Aspirin 'Not Best' For Preventing Short, Intense Workouts Are Key
Strokes
To Super Health

Doctors are being told not to routinely

prescribe aspirin for a common heart
condition that increases stroke risk.
Guidelines from the National Institute
of Health and Care Excellence (NICE)
are set to recommend other drugs
instead for patients with an irregular
heartbeat, called atrial fibrillation.
Warfarin or similar blood-thinning
medicine is best, says NICE in draft
advice to be finalised this month.
The advice will affect hundreds of
thousands of patients.
But experts say most doctors already
follow the advice to prescribe bloodthinners other than aspirin and that the
guidelines are "playing catch-up" - this
is the first time they will have been
updated since they were first issued in
2006
Stroke prevention
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most
common heart rhythm problem,
affecting up to 800,000 people roughly one in 100 - in the UK.
In AF, the heart cannot work as well
as it should and blood clots can form,
which, in turn, increases the risk of a
stroke.
Aspirin has been used for years to
help protect patients from strokes, but
mounting evidence suggests the drug's
benefits are too small compared with
other treatments.
The NICE guidelines for England and
Wales look set to say that although
daily aspirin might still be beneficial for
some patients, most should be offered
something else as well or instead.
According to its draft advice, NICE
says warfarin or a newer type of oral

anticoagulant is often best.

The British Heart Foundation said
most doctors were already doing this.
Prof Peter Weissberg, medical director
at the British Heart Foundation, said:
"Strokes caused by atrial fibrillation
are both common and preventable
but only if the abnormal heart rhythm
is identified in the first place and if
effective drugs are given to prevent
blood-clot development.
"The revised NICE guidance reflects
accumulating evidence that warfarin
and the newer anticoagulants are
much more effective than aspirin at
preventing strokes.
"This does not mean that aspirin is not
important and effective at preventing
heart attacks and strokes in other
circumstances. Patients who are
unclear on whether or not they should
continue to take aspirin should speak to
their doctor."
Prof Peter Elwood, an expert at Cardiff
University, warned it could be unsafe
to suddenly stop taking aspirin. "If
aspirin is to be stopped, it should be
stopped gradually," he said.
An irregular pulse could be a sign
that you have AF
It will feel erratic, and beats may
be variable in strength
AF is most common in people
aged over 55
If you think you might have AF,
you should get yourself checked
out by a doctor
Often, the underlying cause is not
found, but AF is more common in
people with high blood pressure
and heart disease.

Sleeping With Lights On Increases

Obesity Risk In Women
A new study has revealed that sleeping
with too much light in the room
increases the risk of obesity in women.
Greater exposure to light at night raised
both Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist
size in more than 113,000 women taking
part in the British study, scientists found.
The Breakthrough Generations Study
followed the women for 40 years in an

attempt to identify root causes of breast

cancer. Obesity is a known risk factor
for the disease, as reported.
Professor Anthony Swerdlow, from
The Institute of Cancer Research
in London, said that metabolism is
affected by cyclical rhythms within the
body that relate to sleeping, waking
and light exposure.

Health magazines are full of the benefits

of short, intense workouts. Now, it has
found a place in a scientific journal
too as a new study reveals molecular
secrets behind intense workouts.
In the study, scientists from The Scripps
Research Institute (TSRI) discovered
the activation of a single protein known
as CRTC2 and its effects.
"The sympathetic nervous system gets
turned on during intense exercise, but
many had believed it wasn't specific
enough to drive specific adaptations
in exercised muscle," said Michael
Conkright who led the study.
The findings show that not only does
it target those specific muscles, but it
improves them - the long-term benefits
correlate with the intensity of the
workout, Conkright noted.
Following high-intensity exercise,

CRTC2 integrates signals from two

different pathways - the adrenaline
pathway and the calcium pathway.
This directs muscle adaptation and
growth only in the contracting muscle.
Using mice genetically modified
to conditionally express CRTC2,
scientists showed that molecular
changes occurred that emulated
exercised muscles in the absence of
exercise.
In the genetically altered animal
models, this resulted in a muscle size
increase of approximately 15 percent.
"If you think of the adrenaline system
as something that mobilises resources
when you encounter, say, a bear on
your way to work, what we found is
that the system also gets you ready for
your next bear encounter," Conkright
said.

Sushmita Sen To Feature In

Bengali Film

Finally, the Bengali project that

Sushmita Sen has been craving to do,
has materialised. Srijit Mukherjee,
who started his career with the hugely
successful Bangla film "Autograph"
and then went on to make other
milestones like "Hemlock Society" and
"Jaatishwar", has signed the former
beauty queen for his next film.
Srijit said: "It's a film called 'Nirbaak'
(speechless). It compresses together
four love stories connected by
the theme of silence. The stories
are intertwined and connected by
Sushmita's character."
Besides Sushmita, who features in all
four stories, "Nirbaak" stars Jisshu

Vishal-Shekhar To Take Legal

Action

Despite not being paid their dues,

music composer duo Vishal-Shekhar
performed for a Bangalore crowd, but
they now plan to sue the organisers.
Last Saturday, music lovers in
Bangalore may have had a ball at a gig
by music composers Vishal Dadlani
and Shekhar Ravjiani, but little they
do know that the musicians went ahead
with their performance despite not
being paid the dues they had agreed
upon.
Says a source, `The show was pitched
as a musical Vishal-Shekhar night and
it was a sold-out show. However, the
organisers wanted to make more money
by not paying the artistes their dues.
Both Vishal and Shekhar got to know
about this before the show but because
they had been paid a token amount,
they went ahead and performed. They
could have upped and left but they
felt that it wasn't right for their fans

to suffer because of the organisers'

misdemeanour.`
Confirming the news, Vishal recounts
that in April this year, Claret Sun Events
paid them an advance for a public show
in Bangalore. `We were to receive the
rest upon arrival in Bangalore, but on
the day in question, we found that our
rooms were substandard and there was
no trace of the remaining amount.
The promoters, PhaniShri and Sunil
Kashyap, kept asking us to wait. After
a few hours, it was clear that they were
still lying, but since this wasn't the fans'
fault, we performed anyway.
Of course, we apologised to the
audience and exposed the lies of the
promoters. We then found our flights
cancelled in the morning. Luckily,
we had made alternate arrangements
and we will now initiate legal action
against Claret Sun, Phanishri and
Kashyap.`

Ram Kapoor: I Am Leaving Bade

Acche Lagte Hain

Bade Achhe Lagte Hain star Ram

Kapoor, who is seen in Sajid Khans
Humshakals, says he is quitting his
popular TV show to grow as an actor.
I am leaving my show because I want
to grow as an actor. When you do a hit
show for three years, you get stuck to
a similar image. There is no scope left
for growth. But as an actor, I want to
do different kind of work, said Ram.
With the TV drama, the 41-year-old
actor has created a special place for
himself on TV. The actor is playing a

triple role in the comedy film. I am

known for my serious roles but I must
say that comedy is a tough genre. I feel
it is easy to make a person cry but very
tough to make him/her laugh, he said.
Asked whether he had any inhibition
about dressing up as a woman in the
film, Ram said, I have known Sajid
for 20 years. More than a director,
he is a close friend to me. I was only
concerned about the fact that the film
should not be vulgar so that I can take
my two children to watch it.

Would Love To Work With Shah

Rukh: Pitbull

American rapper Armando Christian

Prez, popular by his stage name
Pitbull, shook a leg with Bollywood
superstar Shah Rukh Khan during the
opening ceremony of Indian Premier
League (IPL) in Kolkata last year.
SRK even taught him a few Bollywood
moves but the musician wants more
than that.
Remembering his performance in
India, he said: "I had an amazing time
during my IPL visit to India. The kind
of love and affection that I received
was overwhelming. The people of
India are really warm. I really enjoyed
performing in front of such a huge
and welcoming audience," Pitbull told
IANS in an email interaction.
He shared the stage with King Khan
and says he would like to team up with
him someday.
"I got to learn a few Bollywood
footsteps, thanks to Shah Rukh. He is
an amazing performer, full of energy.
There is nothing as of now, but I would

definitely love to work with him in the

future," Pitbull said.
If he gets a chance to associate with
Shah Rukh, it will be his second
collaboration with a Bollywood
celebrity after recording "Exotic" with
"Barfi!" star Priyanka Chopra in 2013.
He has no project with her as of now, but
he didn't stop himself from praising her.
"She has got a wonderful voice and is
an extremely talented artist," he said.
The rapper, who has recorded with
singers like Jennifer Lopez, Christina
Aguilera and Kesha, says he enjoys
collaborating with different artists.
"I have always loved working in
collaboration with various artists. It
gives me a chance to work with all
beautiful and talented women," said
the "Rain Over Me" hitmaker.
And when asked if he has any
Hollywood actress on mind, he said: "I
would like to team up with all of them.
There are all such gorgeous ladies. It
will be a dream coming true!"

Its Salman Khan And Kareena

Kapoor In KJO'S Shuddhi

Yes, you read that right. Karan Johars

dream project Shuddhi now has a star
cast and a very powerful one. Salman
Khan and Kareena Kapoor have been
finalized for the film, thus putting an
end to all rumors surrounding it.
When the film was announced, Hrithik
Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were
signed as the lead cast of the film.
However, within few days, Hrithik
walked out siting health reasons,
followed by Kareena, who apparently
has a tiff with the filmmaker. Then

Deepika being singed for Shuddhi, but
the duo chose Sanjay Leela Bhansalis
Bajirao Mastani.
But now, look like all is well, as Salman
Khan and Kareena Kapoor are all set

to bring Karan Johars shelved project

Shuddhi back on floors
If rumors are true then this will be

Best Foods For Lowering

Cholesterol

Continued From Last Week

10. Strawberries

Strawberries
are
an
amazing
superfood. This world favorite fruit is
an amazingly healthy treat and it could
help you lower your cholesterol. One
study found that eating 25 grams of
freeze dried strawberry powder resulted
in a 5% reduction of LDL cholesterol.
Berries are low on the glycemic index,
meaning they are gentle on your insulin
levels. Enjoy strawberries fresh for
their maximum health benefits. While
freeze dried were used for the study,
fresh fruit contain fiber which can
further help cholesterol levels.
11. Avocado

This favorite health food is great for

your heart and cholesterol health.

Avocado is packed with oleic acid,
a monounsaturated fat. Oleic acid is
known as omega-9 fatty acid. Avocado
is one of the highest natural sources
of oleic acid, with macadamia nuts
coming up as a close second. Studies
have found that oleic acid can reduce
LDL cholesterol by inhibiting the
process of fat to cholesterol conversion.
Enjoy avocado in moderation because
its high fat content makes it a high
calorie food.
12. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is a breakfast staple, warming

the stomachs of many on a cold
morning. Not only can it provide
ample energy for a busy day, oatmeal
is a great fighter of LDL cholesterol.
The soluble fiber of whole grains act
by attaching to the cholesterol in your
intestines and flushing it out of your
body before it is absorbed. One study
found that eating oatmeal along with
other cholesterol lowering foods had
the same effect on cholesterol levels
that prescription medication does.

How To Lose Weight

More than one-third of adults in North

America are obese. In fact, the furor
over obesity, which some have termed
an epidemic, has reached such
proportions that one big-city mayor
has gone about banning large-sized,
sugary soft drinks and the First Lady
has been on a crusade to control the
dietary offerings in public schools.
Even many adults who do not fit the
clinic definition of obese are still
overweight, and a large percentage are
looking for the best ways to lose weight.
Shedding pounds largely comes down
to the two-pronged factors of diet
and exercise. Not modifying the first
one enough, and not getting enough
of the second one, ends up giving
the individual a recipe for being
overweight.
Conditions related to obesity include

heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes,

and certain types of cancer, according
to the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention.
Counseling someone to eat less and
exercise more might be the simplest
advice possible, but its also, partially,
an oversimplification. When it comes to
diet, no one needs to starve themselves
in order to lose weight. It has more to
do with the types of food you eat than
how much you eat.
-Reduce the amount of red meat in your
diet. If you dont want to eliminate
red meat altogether, choose cuts of
meat with less fat content. Limit your
intake of salt and starches. If youve
got to have potato chips alongside your
sandwich at lunch, opt for the baked
potato chips that are less greasy and
contain less fat than the deep-fried

Health Benefits Of Cucumbers

Cucumbers are the fourth most
cultivated vegetable in the world and
known to be one of the best foods
for your body's overall health, often
referred to as a superfood. Cucumbers
are often sprayed with pesticides so
it is important to buy organic or even
better, grow them yourself.
Here are 10 Benefits of cucumbers:
1.Quick pick me-up - Cucumbers
are a good source of B vitamins. Put
down your sodas and coffee and eat a
cucumber slice.
2. Rehydrates body and replenishes
daily vitamins - Cucumbers are 95
percent water, keeping the body
hydrated while helping the body
eliminate toxins. Cucumbers have
most of the vitamins the body needs
in a single day. Don't forget to leave
the skin on because the skin contains
a good amount of vitamin C, about
10 percent of the daily-recommended
allowance.
3. Skin and hair care - If you don't like
to eat the skin, it can be used for skin
irritations and sunburns as aloe would
be used. Place a slice over puffy eyes
and its anti-inflammatory properties
help reduce puffiness. The silicon and
sulfur in cucumbers help to stimulate
hair growth.
4. Fight cancers - Cucumber are known
to contain lariciresinol, pinoresinol,
and secoisolariciresinol. These three
lignans have a strong history of
research in connection with reduced
risk of several cancer types, including
breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine
cancer and prostate cancer.
5. Home care - Eliminates a foggy
mirror. Before taking a shower, rub a
cucumber slice along a mirror and it
will eliminate the mirror fogging up.
Instead of WD40, take a cucumber
slice and rub it along a squeaky hinge
and your door will stop squeaking.
6. Relieves bad breath - Take a slice

of cucumber and press it to the roof of

your mouth with your tongue for 30
seconds, the phytochemcials will kill
the bacteria in your mouth responsible
for causing bad breath.
7. Hangover cure - To avoid a morning
hangover or headache; eat a few
cucumber slices before going to bed.
Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B
vitamins and electrolytes to replenish
many essential nutrients, reducing
the intensity of both hangover and
headache.
8. Aids in weight loss and digestion Due to its low calorie and high water
content, cucumber is an ideal diet for
people who are looking for weight loss.
The high water content and dietary
fiber in cucumbers are very effective
in ridding the body of toxins from the
digestive system, aiding digestion.
Daily consumption of cucumbers can
be regarded as a remedy for chronic
constipation.
9. Cures diabetes, reduces cholesterol
and controls blood pressure - Cucumber
juice contains a hormone which is
needed by the cells of the pancreas for
producing insulin which has been found
to be beneficial to diabetic patients.
Researchers found that a compound
called sterols in cucumbers may help
reduce cholesterol levels. Cucumbers
contain a lot of potassium, magnesium
and fiber. These work effectively for
regulating blood pressure. This makes
cucumbers good for treating both low
blood pressure and high blood pressure.
10. Promotes joint health, relieves
gout and arthritis pain -Cucumber is
an excellent source of silica, which is
known to help promotes joint health by
strengthening the connective tissues.
They are also rich in vitamin A, B1, B6,
C & D, Folate, Calcium, Magnesium,
and Potassium. When mixed with carrot
juice, they can relieve gout and arthritis
pain by lowering the uric acid levels

chips. You might find youre really not

sacrificing that much in terms of taste.
-A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, egg
whites, skinless poultry, fish and nonfat
dairy products will certainly aid in the
mission of losing weight. Drink more
water and less sugary drinks. If you
have to have a soda, a diet soda is a
better option, but seltzer is an even
better choice than that.
-In terms of exercise, its importantif
not always easyto make sure you get
at least some physical activity each and
every day. Cardio and strength training
burn lots of calories. If your feet or
your stamina level wont allow for a

regular jogging regimen, then make

sure you take lots of walks. Next time
you need to mail a letter, walk to the
mailbox instead of driving. Try to work
in a daily walk in your neighborhood.
And if you intend on more rigorous,
formal exercising at the gym or fitness
center, be sure to pace yourself and
dont build up to an overly ambitious
workout agenda too quickly.
There are thousands of diet fads among
us. However, sometimes the best
advice is common sense. Work towards
a healthy diet and integrate regular
exercise. You would be surprised at
the results small changes can make.

2014 MINI Cooper

The MINI brand has gone through

many changes in its BMW-owned
revival, but the fundamental spirit of
driving fun and economical practicality
remain. The zippy, cute-faced MINI
is a small car that has carved itself a
unique niche in the market.
For 2014, there aren't any significant
changes, and pricing remains stable.
An all-new MINI is due to debut soon,
but the design is likely to expand on
the current theme--though not likely to
expand much in size.
The shape and details that make even
a modern MINI instantly recognizable
will remain, blending the classic
with the current in a compact and,
sometimes, cute design. The new
Cooper Hardtop will arrive first,
unveiled toward the end of 2013
before going on sale in the first half of
next year as a 2014 model. Updates to
drivetrain and other equipment haven't
been released yet. The remainder of the
MINI lineup will continue forward for
the 2014 model year.

problems. Fitness will be possible and
this will keep you happy and satisfied.

Aquarius:

It will be good for you to postpone

major decisions for some other week.
Auspicious things also may get delayed.
Your confidence and status will grow.
This may not be an exciting week for
relationship. There may be heavy work
pressure for you. You may need to tune
your thoughts in a positive manner so
that you can excel in your job. It will
be good for you to be extra friendly in
relationship. Money will be available in
plenty and you will utilize your resources
in an effective manner. Money flow
will be good and you should make use
of the week to stabilize your finances.
Expenses will be more for the week, it
will be wise for you to maintain some
saving practices and this will help you
to stabilize finances. There are chances
for disputes in the family. You may have
to adjust to maintain better relationship
with your close family members.
You may suffer from pain in legs and
thighs. You will feel good by practicing
meditation practices.

As for current styling, a short hood,

"floating" roof, and big, round
headlights are among the characteristic
elements shared among the Coupe,
Convertible, Roadster, Clubman, and
Hardtop (hatchback) models.
Inside, much is the same between the
various models, at least in the front
row. The center-mounted speedometer
puts the sporty side of the MINI at the
fore, while quirky buttons and switches
sit in a funky design that shows the
Cooper's lighter side. It's a busy look,
but it all works within the MINI's
palette.
Under the hood, the MINI range
shares its engines: base models
get a 121-horsepower, 1.6-liter
four-cylinder; Cooper S models a
181-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter
four; and John Cooper Works models
use an even hotter 208-horsepower
version of the engine. For base and
Cooper S models, a choice of six-speed
manual transmission or six-speed
automatic is available; the same is also

Pisces:

You can make use of the week

for gaining more knowledge and
developing your skills. You can find
the week in your favor, you will be able
to feel more energetic and determined
and this may keep you in high spirits.
Work front is said to be favorable and
provide you satisfaction. You will be
able to portray a different approach
in carrying out your work. You will
showcase your talent in work and
gain recognition. This recognition will
boost your spirits and make you feel
more confident. Financial front will
be very good for the week; you will be
able to make good money. Money will
be available in plenty for you. You will
have the scope to enhance your level of
savings. There will be romantic feelings
and excitement in relationship. You
will also feel happy over the events that
are going in your family. There will be
good understanding in relationship for
the week. You will be able to maintain
pleasing communication with your
loved ones. You will be able to maintain
good health. There will be all around
happiness and excitement which help
you to maintain good health.

true of the John Cooper Works models,

with the addition of the automatic
option in 2013. Despite their sporty
nature, the MINI range can also be
efficient, with gas mileage of up to 29
mpg city and 37 mpg highway.
Despite their small size and sharp
handling, the many MINI variants ride
surprisingly well. Road noise raises
its head, and as you climb the sport
spectrum, choppiness and harshness
rise, most noticeably in the John
Cooper Works models. All MINIs
have issues with rearward visibility,
thanks to the high beltline, low seating
position, and somewhat chunky rear
roof supports. In Clubman models,
the center-opening rear door further
hinders visibility.
Comfort and space are surprisingly
good--in the front seats. Even those
well over six feet tall should find plenty
of leg and head room, though the low
roof of Coupe and Roadster models
may make it harder to get inside. The
rear seats of Clubman and Cooper
Hardtop and Convertible models are
usable, but not spacious. Materials
are good throughout, but perhaps with
more hard plastic than you'd expect at
MINI's price point.
The 2014 MINI Cooper and crew
haven't yet been crash-tested by the
National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) or the

(IIHS), but the 2013 model earned top
marks of "Good" in moderate-overlap
front-end crash tests, and "Average"
in side-impact and roof-strength tests.
Standard safety equipment includes: six
airbags, stability and traction control,
anti-lock brakes, hill-start assist, runflat tires, and parking sensors.
Customization straight from the dealer
is one of MINI's strong suits, and
there is a host of aesthetic tweaks that
can be made to any MINI, whether
Hardtop, Clubman, Roadster, Coupe,
or Convertible, including paint options
for the car, side mirrors, and roof,
plus vinyl graphic packages. Standard
equipment is a bit spartan though
Bluetooth and USB/iPod integration
make the grade, but upgrades like MINI
Connected with Apps, a 10-speaker
audio system, and navigation can add
the near-luxury factor if that's what
you're after.
For 2014, there's just one premium
package, now including a dual-pane
panoramic sunroof, rain sensor /
automatic headlight control, and
automatic climate control. A new City
Pack will be offered, including: alarm
system, power fold mirrors, heated
mirror and wash jets, auto dimming
rear-view mirrors (interior and
exterior), rear park distance control
and comfort access.

Wellington Phoenixs Football United Tour to be watched by millions

Wellington Phoenixs Football United
Tour will be broadcast to millions
when West Ham United and Newcastle
United visit New Zealand in July this
year.
Wellington Phoenix General Manager
David Dome says there has been strong
interest in the international TV rights
for the Tour.
The Football United Tour will take
New Zealand to the world with at least
20 countries signing up to see two
Premier League teams play in New
Zealand, Dome said.
The tour of these two famous old
Clubs to the bottom of the South Pacific
has caused quite a stir internationally.
There has been a lot of interest in how
the A-Leagues Wellington Phoenix
and Sydney FC will fare against the
Premier Leagues West Ham and
Newcastle United in a part of the world
primarily known for its natural beauty
and rugby!
Markets as diverse as China, the
Middle East and North Africa will
screen the matches, along with more
expected countries such as the United
Kingdom, United States, Europe and
Australia.
Its a fantastic opportunity to showcase

the Wellington Phoenix, the cities and

the country to many millions of people
from around the world Dome said.
Dome also announced that the Tour is
to be made available in New Zealand
on SKY Arena pay per view television.
The assistance of SKY is fundamental
for the tournament.
The cost of bringing two English
Premier League teams out to New
Zealand is large and pay-per-view can
help us mitigate the risk.
Dome said that pricing matches for pay
per view was a delicate balancing act.
We want fans from outside Dunedin,
Auckland and Wellington to be able to
access the matches for a good price.
However, we also know from the
A-League that live televised sport
contributes to people staying at home
and watching the game on TV and we
want to encourage fans to turn out for
these two teams and create a really
special atmosphere for them.
We believe that at $24.99 per game
and $39.95 for the Tour weve got
a good balance between the two
objectives Dome said.

Bylsma Interviews With Canucks As Stevens Ruled Out But

Wheres Willie?
Canucks coaching carousel continues to spin, with AHL champ Desjardins getting the front-runner status

Dan Bylsma has had his meeting with

the Canucks regarding their vacant
head-coaching position this week, but
it appears another top candidate is out
of the mix.
Los Angeles assistant coach John
Stevens had been speculated to be
high on a Canucks list, but the Kings
quashed that notion on Wednesday
when they promoted him to associate
coach under Darryl Sutter.
While Bylsma has a Stanley Cup (2009)
and a coach of the year award (2011)
on his resume while in Pittsburgh, he
hasnt had much success since in the
NHL playoffs especially surprising
considering the top-end talent hes had
to work with (Sidney Crosby, Evgeni
Malkin, etc.) while with the Penguins.
Also, if as Canucks President of
Hockey Ops Trevor Linden said this
week there is a good chance the
team wont have a new bench boss
until after the NHL draft in Philly June
27-28, Bylsma will likely be hired
elsewhere by then.
Bylsma had an excellent interview with
Florida GM Dale Tallon last week and
is believed to be the front-runner there.
Which all continues to indicate that
minor league head coach Willie
Desjardins is the front-runner in this
race. Desjardins, whose Texas Stars

won the AHL championship this week,

is expected to meet with Linden and
GM Jim Benning this week. So is New
York Rangers associate coach Scott
Arniel, who twice had been a minor
league head coach in the Canucks
organization.
Bylsma is apparently the fourth to
interview with Linden and Jim Benning.
They have already spoken with former
Canucks coach Marc Crawford as well
as Crawfords former assistant, Mike
Johnston, whos now the head coach
of the WHLs Portland Winterhawks.
Fired Florida coach Peter Horacek also
been reportedly interviewed.
If the Canucks dont have a head coach
in place a week from now, it could put
them at a distinct disadvantage when it
comes to courting potential free agents.
A new wrinkle in the latest NHL
collective
bargaining
agreement
allows teams to speak with pending
unrestricted free agents on June 25
five days before the actual signing
window opens on July 1. Clearly, its
tough to sell a free agent on the merits
of coming to a new team if he doesnt
know who the coach is going to be.
Benning said this week that one of the
reasons for using a compliance buyout
on David Booth was to free up cap
space to court free agents.
