t is im#ortant to understand that most of these are allegorical stories that relate to the Buddha
defeating the negative as#ects of his (Mara and +lavaka) and others3 minds!
t is said that these verses if chanted &ith a clear and #ure intention are hel#ful in #rotecting
the seeker by attracting the Good around!

armed &as Mara seated on the
trum#eting, ferocious ele#hant Girimekhala!
:im, together &ith his army, did the
;ord of Sages subdue by means of generosity and other virtues!
By its grace may %oyous victory be thine!
More violent than Mara &ere the
indocile, obstinate demon +lavaka, &ho
battled &ith the Buddha throughout the
&hole night!
:im, did the ;ord of Sages
subdue by means of :is #atience and
self5control!
By its grace may %oyous victory be thine!
-alagiri, the mighty ele#hant, highly
into4icated &as raging like a forest5fire
and &as terrible as thunder5bolt!
S#rinkling the &aters of loving5kindness,
this ferocious Beast, did the ;ord of
Sages subdue!
By its grace may %oyous victory be thine!
<ith u#lifted s&ord, for a distance of
three leagues, did &icked +ngulimala
run! "he ;ord of Sages subdued him by
:is #sychic #o&ers!
By its grace may %oyous victory be thine!
:er belly bound &ith faggots, to simulate
the bigness of #regnancy, 0inca, &ith
harsh &ords made foul accusation in the
midst of an assemblage! :er, did the
;ord of Sages subdue by :is serene and
#eaceful bearing!
By its grace may Joyous victory be thine!
:aughty Saccaka, &ho ignored truth, &as
like a banner in controversy, and his
vision &as blinded by his o&n
dis#utation! ;ighting the lam# of
&isdom, :im did the ;ord of Sages
subdue!

"he &ise and #o&erful ser#ent
-ando#ananda, the -oble Sage caused
to be subdued by the #sychic #o&er of
his disci#le son ("hero Moggallana)!
By its grace may %oyous victory be thine!
"he #ure, radiant, ma%estic Brahma,
named Baka, &hose hand &as grievously
bitten by the snake of tenacious false5vie&s,
the ;ord of Sages cure &ith :is
medicine of &isdom!
By its grace may %oyous victory be thine!
"he &ise one, &ho daily recites and
earnestly remembers these eight verses
of %oyous victory of the Budhha, &ill get
rid of various misfortunes and gain the
bliss of -irvana
