OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION
Pentecost Sunday
JUNE 8TH, 2014
Fr. Guido Marrosu, Administrator
A Sunday Refection
Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is truly risen! Alleluia!
Despite having seen the risen Christ, the apostles were still
full of doubt, of disbelief and, above all, of fear. Their story
is our story. For two thousand years on earth resounds the
news that a man, Jesus of Nazareth, overcame death and rose
again from the dead. Along the course of history, many men
and women, young and old, rich and poor, believed this news
and witnessed the truth of the Gospel with their lives and with
their works. Yet, even today, the man is a prisoner of fear: fear
of tomorrow, fear of being betrayed or abandoned, fear of get-
ting old, fear of suffering, and ultimately, fear of dying. The
fear of death, that is, the fear of losing ones life, forces the
man to live for himself at the mercy of the lies of the idols of
this world. Pursued as a source of life and happiness, money,
work, success, and well-being turn into monsters that imprison
man in illusion, in dissatisfaction, loneliness, despair, and, in-
deed, in fear of death. But Good News for all men in the world
still echoes today: Christ is risen! Christ has destroyed death
and the fear of death! He is alive and wants to donate all men
his own Spirit. It is the Spirit of truth, who tells us that God
is love, that Christ is the truth and the life for every man. It is
the Holy Spirit who tells us that God is Holy because He loves
sinners and gives them forgiveness and peace. It is the Spirit
of Love that gives people the love of God breaking down the
barriers of peoples, languages and races division. It is the Spirit
of the mission that overcomes the fear of death, that consoles,
that transforms peoples lives and gives them the strength to
bring to others the Good News of the Jesus Christs Gospel.
The Spirit, who has been blowing strongly on the apostles at
Pentecost, still blows in a renewed and perennial Pentecost to
put its Church going forth (Pope Francis) to the geographical
and existential peripheries of this world. Come, Holy Spirit,
come! Amen! Alleluia!

Saintly Meditation
June 11th, St. Barnabas, Apostle.
The man we now call Barnabas was originally named
J oseph, but he was such a generous and faithful follower of
J esus that the apostles gave him his new name, which means
son of encouragement. Barnabas helpful and optimistic
attitude was a source of encouragement to many new Chris-
tians. He was also a powerful example for others. In Acts
4:36, we learn that he sold his property and gave the money
to the apostles to use in their work with people in need. Barn-
abas was also a peacemaker. The apostles were suspicious of
Paul, who had begun to teach others about Christ after his
conversion on the road to Damascus. The apostles remem-
bered that Paul had persecuted Christians, and they worried
that his faith in Jesus was not genuine. But Barnabas rec-
ognized that Pauls faith was sincere. Barnabas introduced
Paul to Peter and the other apostles so they could see for
themselves that his faith was real. Barnabas and Paul were
sent as missionaries to Antioch, the third-largest city in the
Roman Empire. They established strong Christian commu-
nities there. During this time, they heard that the Jerusalem
Christians were suffering because of the cruel persecution
by the Romans. Many could not support their families and
lost their homes. They were greatly in need. Barnabas and
Paul told the Antioch Christians what was happening in J e-
rusalem. The people responded generously. Soon Barnabas
and Paul returned to J erusalem to help the apostles distribute
the money, food, and clothing donated in love by the An-
tioch Christians. It is believed that Barnabas was martyred in
Cyprus around the year 61 and that he was tortured and then
stoned to death.
no a Damasco.
Jess no fuera autntico. Entonces Bernab, reconoci que
la fe de Pablo era sincera. Bernab present Pablo a Pedro
Imperio Romano. Ellos establecieron comunidades cristia-
nas fuertes all.
Muchos no podan mantener
a sus familias y perdieron sus hogares. Ellos estaban muy
necesitados.
