ThesuccessfulcandidatewillhaveaPhDinReligiousStudies,andastrongteachingand
researchbackgroundinaspecialistareaofthesubject.He/shewilldemonstratea
commitmenttolearningandteaching,effectiveteachingabilityandhavearecognised
teachingqualification,orbewillingtoundertakeone.He/shewillbeaneffective
communicatorandhavetheabilitytoundertaketheroleofcourseleaderifandwhen
required.Thesuccessfulcandidatewillalsocontributetotheknowledgeexchangeand
impactprofileoftheSchoolbyengaginginprofessionaldevelopment,fundingbidsand
mountingeventsforexternalaudiences.

5. PURPOSEOFPOST

To contribute to the delivery and development of courses in Religious Studies, and to help
develop the research profile and reputation of the subject.

6. MAINDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES

6.1GENERICROLE

a) TocontributetotheFacultyobjectivesthroughthedeliveryoflearningandteachingin
ReligiousStudiesusinginnovativeandcreativepedagogy

b) Tocontributetohighlevelsofacademicachievementandstudentsatisfactionby
embeddingbestpracticeinassessment,studentfeedbackandstudentsupport

c) Tocontributetocurriculumdevelopmentspeciallyinthecontextofpotentialnew
synergiesintheFaculty

6.2 SPECIFICROLE

Thepostholderwill:
a) Teachavarietyofmodulesasrequired,actingasModuleLeaderwherenecessary,
andcourseleaderifrequired

b) Tosupervisedissertations,projectworkandindependentstudy

c) Undertakecourseadministrationandensurethatthequalityrequirementsofthe
Universityaremetbythecourses.

d) Toundertakeresearchandscholarlyactivity,whicharealignedtothestrategic
prioritiesoftheSchool,andtomaintainaresearchprofileandcontributetothe
enhancementofthereputationofReligiousStudies,nationallyandinternationally

e) ToundertaketheroleofPersonaltutor.

f) TocontributetotheFacultysExternalIncomeGenerationactivities.

g) ContributetocommunityengagementtoraisetheprofileofReligiousStudiesinthe
region
h) UndertakesuchotherresponsibilitiesanddutiesasmayberequiredbytheDeanof
Facultyorhisnominee.

7. OTHERFEATURESOFTHEPOST

Thepostholderwillberequired,underthetermsofhis/hercontractofemploymentwith
theUniversity,toparticipateinastaffappraisalscheme.

Thisjobdescriptionsetsoutthedutiesofthepostatthetimewhenitwasdrawnup.Such
dutiesmayvaryfromtimetotimewithoutchangingthegeneralcharacterofthejoborthe
levelofresponsibilityentailed.Suchvariationsarecommonoccurrenceandcannot
themselvesjustifyareconsiderationofthegradingofthepost.

8. DATAPROTECTIONACT(1984)

Thepostholderwillneedtohaveregardtotheabovelegislationandwill,atalltimes,bear
inmindhis/herresponsibilitiesundertheaboveAct.Attentionisspecificallydrawntothe
needforconfidentialityinhandlingpersonaldataandtheimplicationsofunauthorised
disclosure.

9. COMPUTERMISUSEACT(1990)

ThepostholderwillneedtohaveregardfortheprovisionoftheComputerMisuseAct1990
andinparticulartotakesuchstepsasmaybenecessarytopreventunauthorisedaccessto
computermaterial(Section1)andtheunauthorisedmodificationofcomputermaterial
(Section3).

10. HEALTHANDSAFETY

Thepostholdermaybeexpectedtoundertakeemergencyfirstaidtraining.Thepostholder
willberesponsibleforhealthandsafetyintheareaunderhis/hercontrolonadaytoday
basis,andmustensure,asfarasisreasonablypracticable,thathe/sheisfamiliarwithall
relevantHealthandSafetylegislationandrecommendationsandthattheseareobserved
withinhis/herareasofresponsibility.Attentionisparticularlydrawntotheexistenceofthe
Universityspolicystatementonhealthandsafetyatwork,copiesofwhichhavebeen
displayedonnoticeboardsintheUniversity(furthercopiesmaybeobtainedfromthe
HumanResourcesDepartment).Anyaccidentinthepostholdersareamustbeenteredin
theaccidentbook.

11. HOURSOFWORK

Staffareexpectedtoworksuchhoursasarereasonablynecessaryinordertofulfiltheir
dutiesandresponsibilitiesanditwouldthereforebeinappropriatetodefinethetotalhours
tobeworkedinanyweek.Areasonablenorm,however,havingregardtothecontractual
positionofotherseniorstaffintheUniversity,wouldbethirtyseven,althoughthisshould
notberegardedasaminimumormaximum.Directteachingresponsibilityshouldnot
exceedeighteenhoursinanyweekoratotaloffivehundredandfiftyhoursintheteaching
yearforafulltimememberofstaff.

12. THESALARY

ThesalarywillbepaidatanappropriatepointontheLecturer/SeniorLecturerScale.
SalariesarepaidmonthlyinarrearsthroughtheBACSSystemdirectlyintothebankor
buildingsocietyaccountofeachmemberofstaff.

13. HOLIDAYS

Theannualleaveentitlementis35workingdays.Thisisinadditiontothestatutoryholidays
applicableinEngland,localdiscretionaryholidaysanddayswhentheUniversityisclosedin
theinterestsofefficiency.Academicstaffareentitledto24daysofselfmanagedresearch
andscholarlyactivity(SMRSA).

14. TERMS&CONDITIONS

Indeterminingtermsandconditionsofemployment,theUniversityhasregardto
recommendationsmadethroughtheappropriatenationalnegotiatingframework.Fullterms
andconditionsofserviceareavailablefromPersonnel.
