Introduction

Meaning of Open Source Software
Open source software (OSS) is defined as computer software for which thesource code
and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software
license that meets the Open Source Definition or that is inthe public domain. This permits users
to use, change, and improve the software, andto redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms.

Meaning of Hardware
A computer's hardware consists of the physical components necessary tooperate and
interact with a computer. Since a computer's primary language is binary, devices are necessary to
convert our input into that language. The binary code comingout of the computer must also be
translated into something usable for the operator.

Meaning of Software
Software is often divided into two categories:
System software: Includes the operating system and all the utilities thatenables the
computer to function.
Application software: Includes programs that do real work for users. For example, word
processors, spreadsheets, and database managementsystems fall
under the category of applications software.

The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)
Meaning of Open Source OS
An operating system is a set of programs containing instructions that coordinate all the
activities among computer hardware resources. Open Source Operating System is free to use and
which provides the original code where the source code is available (under a copyright license)
to the public. Users are able to modify the operating system by using the source code provided
by the company to the public and redistribute the modified or unmodified version of that
operating system.

Examples of Open Source OS
Kubuntu Linux
A user friendly operating system based on KDE, the K Desktop Environment. With a
predictable 6 month release cycle and part of the Ubuntu project, Kubuntu isthe GNU/Linux
distribution for everyone. Improved desktop, updated applicationsand increased usability
features are just a few of the surprises with this latest release.

Fedora Linux

A Linux-based operating system that showcases the latest in free and opensource
software. Fedora is always free for anyone to use, modify, and distribute. It is built by people
across the globe who work together as a community: the FedoraProject. The Fedora Project is
open and anyone is welcomed to join.

The Latest Open Source Application Software
Meaning of Open Source Application Software
Open source application software is computer software that is available in source code
form for modification. Most source code are reserved for copyrights holders and it doesnt
permit users to modify that application software. Open source application software permits users
to modify and improve the software.

Examples of Open Source Application Software
Open Office
An office application set (for word processing, spreadsheet manipulation, picture drawing
and data base access) compatible with all other major office application sets such as Office and
available for Windows and Mac as well as Linuxand other UNIX systems.

Squirrel Mail

An email application (for reading and writing email through a web client program)
supporting IMAP and SMTP and available for Windows and Mac as well asLinux and other
UNIX systems.

Hardware
The Canon PIXMA MX477 is a printer with capabilities of printing, scanning, copying,
and faxing. This printer allows users to print photos, emails, web pages and documents
wirelessly, without the need to install device drivers. With Access Point Mode, smart devices can
now bypass the need for a wireless LAN and just directly connect to the printer to print and scan.
It can print different size of paper such as A4, A5, B5, LTR, LGL, 4x6, 5x7, and many more.
There are two type of scanner which is in it, Flatbed & ADF. It is using CIS (Contact Image
Sensor) and have a Optical Resolution up to 1200x2400 dpi. It is a cross-platform software
which means it can be used on Windows OS or Mac OS X.

Software
Microsoft Office 2013 is a version of Microsoft Office, a productivity suite for Microsoft
Windows. Development on this version of Microsoft Office was started in 2010 and ended on
October 11, 2012 when Microsoft Office 2013 was released to manufacturing. Office 2013 is
more cloud-based than previous versions, a domain login. The Office Web Apps suite was also
updated for Office 2013, introducing additional editing features and interface changes. Microsoft
Office 2013 can only be used in Windows OS. In addition to these, graphics hardware

acceleration requires a screen resolution of 1024576 pixels or larger and a DirectX 10-
compliant GPU with at least 64 MB of video memory.

Pervasive Computing
Meaning of Pervasive Computing
The idea that technology is moving beyond the personal computer to everyday devices
with embedded technology and connectivity as computing devices become progressively smaller
and more powerful. It is also called ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing is the result of
computer technology advancing at exponential speeds - a trend toward all man-made and some
natural products having hardware and software. Pervasive computing goes beyond the realm of
personal computers: it is the idea that almost any device, from clothing to tools to appliances to
cars to homes to the human body to your coffee mug, can be imbedded with chips to connect the
device to an infinite network of other devices. The goal of pervasive computing, which combines
current network technologies with wireless computing, voice recognition, Internet capability and
artificial intelligence, is to create an environment where the connectivity of devices is embedded
in such a way that the connectivity is unobtrusive and always available.

Examples of Pervasive Computing
Smartphone
A smartphone is a mobile phone offering advanced capabilities, often with PC-like
functionality. There is no industry standard definition of a smartphone. Some smartphone runs
completely on a operating system software providing a standardized interfaced and platform for
application developers. Smartphones have advanced features like e-mail, Internet and e-book
reader capabilities, and/or built-in keyboard or external USB keyboard and VGA connector. Its
a miniature computer that has phone capabilities.

Google Glass
Google Glass is a wearable computer with an optical head-mounted display (OHMD). It
was developed by Google with the mission of producing a mass-market ubiquitous computer.
Google Glass displays information in a smartphone-like hands-free format. Wearers
communicate with the Internet via natural language voice commands. Google Glass became
officially available to the general public on May 15, 2014, for a price of $1500. Before that users
were required to receive invitations before they could try Google Glass. Google Glass
applications are free applications built by third-party developers. Glass also uses many existing
Google applications, such as Google Now, Google Maps, Google+, and Gmail. It has a
Touchpad located on the side of Google Glass, allowing users to control the device by swiping
through a timeline-like interface displayed on the screen. It also has a camera which have the
ability to take photos and record 720p HD videos. Theres a display in The Explorer version of
Google Glass which uses a Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS), field-sequential colour, LED
illuminated display. Google Glass is still a project and it is not a final version of the product.

Conclusion
Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so usersare
free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified
forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can interactwith computers.
Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will grant your wish.
