Mycenaean Military

The Mycenaean civilisation was a society that was mostly attacking

enemy cities or defending their own. This age was warring a lot and
lasted from 1600BC to 1100BC (during Bronze Age). Mycenae lost
power in the 12
th
century BC, resulting in many palaces (including
Mycenae) burning.

My chosen aspect of Mycenaean life is the military. Military was an
important part of Mycenaean life as they fought in many wars. They
were considered warrior people and expansion of their country
was important to them. They were very powerful, and even caused
the downfall of the famous city, Troy.
In Mycenaean times warriors were needed
to fight in war against enemies and wild
animals. Palaces in Mycenaean used
different metals and gold to decorate their
walls and rooms. Funeral Masks were also
made from these materials to perform a ritual SOURCE 1
when burying a king or important person.

The Mycenaean people used many different
materials to craft swords, daggers and spears.
They were made out of stone, granite, gold,
bronze and other materials. These weapons
were used often as the Mycenaeans fought

The military in the Mycenaean times changed their life majorly.
Firstly, they had to build their fortress on top of a mountain to
increase defence against attackers. Also most of their men
committed themselves to fight to keep their land safe from invasion.
If they hadnt done these things, Mycenae would have crashed and
burned way earlier.
The Mycenaeans were very sophisticated by 2000 BC. Their pottery,
artwork and architecture are known to be complex. They had board
games, simple plumbing methods and they dominated the
Mediterranean, spreading their culture and influence. This impacted
a positive effect on the Mycenaean people. According to Greek
legends, the Mycenaean civilisation was declined and replaced by
Dorian invaders from the north. Although we dont know for sure
that this is true, many people believe it. Palaces destroyed their
systems of writing, reading and art, their way of life was completely
destroyed. This began a new civilisation of Greek people.

During the Mycenaean times many things changed. They won many
battles against cities and empires. The famous city of Troy even fell
to them! Their culture, religions, and knowledge of power spread
very quickly over the many countries around them. They were one of
the most powerful civilisations ever.
