could have travelled long distances that too only on a few occasions,
therefore no traffic problems could have been there in those days. According
to the writer, even those who had built roads decades ago, though they had

f. By the expression ‘the road capacity is stretched to the limit’ the writer
might mean that no longer can the road systems be improved by making
additional parts to them like making further roads. The expression ‘any
further pressure on the system’ means further attempts of developments in the
existing road system. Such attempts might cause the commuters facing worse

a) These lines have been taken from the novel “Oliver Twist” written by Charles
Dicken. These lines were said by Rose Maylie to Oliver when they come to know
that Mr. Brownlow had moved away.
Before these lines Oliver and Rose Maylie decided to embark for London, to search
out Mr. Brownlow. When they reached Mr. Brownlow’s house they were upset to
find that he had moved away.
In these lines Rose is trying to comfort Oliver and guided him not to lose hope yet.
He had hoped that they will find them but it needs time. (2.5 marks)

b) These lines have been taken from the novel, “Oliver Twist” written by Charles
Dicken. These lines were spoken by Bill Sikes to Artful Dodger, when he saw that
Oliver was shot.
Before these lines Sikes forced Oliver to go into the house and open the main door for
them. So they do the robbery over there. Oliver went unwillingly inside the house
but decided to wake the household people. Before he could wake them, they woke up
and shot a fire at Oliver. Then these lines were spoken to Sikes.
In these lines Sikes told Artful Dodger to run since the house hold people were awake
and had shot Oliver. He left Oliver bleeding there and ran away with the rest of the
gang member. ( 2.5 marks)

c) These lines have been taken from the novel, “Oliver Twist” written by Charles
Dickens. These lines were spoken by the Grimmig to Mr Brownlow when he did not
agree that Oliver was a thief.
Before these lines Mr Grimmig and Mr Brownlow were having discussion regarding
Oliver’s character. Mr. Grimmig always took the opposite point of view for the joy
of it. He was convinced that Oliver was a criminal.
In these lines Mr. Grimmig told Mr. Brownlow that he should not trust Oliver. He
firmly believed that as soon as Oliver will be fit he will go back to his criminal life.

a) The Listeners – The main idea of the poem, “The Listeners” is that the creeping
feeling of being watched when no one is there. Although we are alone but we are
aware that someone is watching us. ( 2.5 marks)

b) Drive the nail aright – The main idea of the poem is that the poet gives inspiration
to the youngsters that they have the ability to achieve their targets but for that they
should not lose hope. They should keep on trying until they succeed. (2.5 marks)

a) In this stanza, the poet, Norman Maclean advices the youngsters that if during
reaching their goals, they face any problems, they should not lose heart. They should

b) In this stanza, the poet William Wordsworth says that he was not aware of the
theme of the song which the maiden song. Since the song had no ending and it was
different from the other songs which he had heard. He saw her singing at her work
continuously not being aware that the poet was listening to her. 2.5 68

Q. 5 a) Oliver is an orphan born in a workhouse and Dicken’s uses his situation to


criticize public policy towards the poor in 1830 s England. Oliver is between 9 and
12 years old when the main action of the novel occurs. Though treated with cruelty
and surrounded by coarseness for most of his life, he is a pious, innocent child and his
charms draw the attention of several wealthy benefactors. His true identity is the
central mystery. In short Oliver is pious, kind-hearted and loving child.

b) Mrs Brownlow is a well-off, erudite gentleman who serves as Oliver’s first


benefactor. Mr. Brownlow owns a portrait of Agnes Fleming and was engaged to Mr.
Leeford’s sister when she did. Throughout the novel he behaves with compassion
and common sense and emerges as a natural leader. In short Mr. Brownlow was a
true gentleman and carried himself well.

c) Mrs Bedwin was Mr Brownlow’s housekeeper. She was a gentle-hearted lady.


She looked after Oliver in a loving manner. She was fully dedicated to her job. She
took extra care of Oliver and was always alert on duty. (5 marks)
