HeathersStory- It all started in the early spring of 2003, when Heather was just 33
years old. She felt soreness and a soft lump under her left arm. She ignored it thinking it was from snow
shoveling but the soft lump eventually became hard and more painful. When she finally sought treatment,
she was informed she had two types of cancer in her left breast. She had a consultation with Johns Hopkins
who ran blood tests. The results came back as Brac II. She was informed this is a genetic mutation from her
fathers side of the family. The doctors suggested she try to have kids soon as cancer reoccurrence was a
high probability to return as either ovarian or colon. Her marriage was failing so having children was not an
option. Her cancer went into remission but returned again in April 2009 in the form of colon cancer. It took
two years to be diagnosed as doctors could not figure out what was causing her back pain. Heather had to
have her colon resectioned and endure a full hysterectomy. She went through 6 months of 3 types of
chemotherapy every other week.
Heather endured several major surgeries, weeks in the hospital followed by 6 months of treatment but it
didnt stop the cancer. In April 2012, Heather was informed she had stage IV Colon Cancer; an incurable
disease that metastasized to her lungs. Since then she has been on chemotherapy every 2 weeks. Most of
this is a 3-day infusion pump she has to wear. She tries to keep her life normal by continuing to work,
supporting herself, paying her mortgage and home maintenance on her own. Heather has a close support
system with her mother and close friends and family.
Although the survival rate for Stage IV cancer is not very high, Heather is strong and admittedly
stubborn and has continued to fight this disease. She is an inspiration to everyone around her.
In the 2011 John Wheels for Wishes she was happy to ride as a passenger. This year, her goal is to ride her
own bike.~~~
